The professionals at Maholick Innovative Dentistry strive to meet and
exceed your expectations. Their focus is on delivering the best possible
dental care to their patients. They place a heavy emphasis on continuing
education so that they may be the best team to take care of your dental
needs. SVM spoke to Dr. Maholick about their new location, common
procedures and the current biggest threat to dental health.
You’ve recently made an exciting move from Northlake Drive to Williams
Road, can you tell us what new and returning patients can expect from your
new office? An upscale concierge type of environment. The facility is designed
around providing the best patient experience. We have patient education in the waiting
area. There are movies and stress relieving videos that can be watched during
treatment. Pleasant ambient sound. Most importantly we have a well-trained team
that prides themselves on providing a great patient experience.
You were born and raised in Columbus and after receiving your Doctorate you
decided to move back to Columbus and serve the area. Can you talk about why
you chose to have your dental practice in your hometown? Columbus is home for
me. My wife and I were raised here and most of our family and friends are here. I
believe that Columbus is a great community to raise a family. It has a nice mid-sized
feel without the hustle and bustle of a large city such as Atlanta. There is much
opportunity here and it is in a good location should you like to run to Atlanta or the
beach for the weekend.
What is your most popular dental cosmetic procedure? We perform many reconstructions
to correct severely damaged teeth and improve smiles. One of the more
popular procedures we perform is called “Teeth Express.” When someone has severely
damaged or worn out teeth and we determine that it is time to look at options
that don’t involve using their natural teeth we can now deliver a brand new smile
that stays in place unlike dentures and partials. It is a life altering experience for
many people that have been hiding their smile from a spouse or in social situations.

Teeth whitening is a hot topic these days, but what should someone know
about dental whitening and bleaching before getting the procedure done?
Teeth whitening is a very safe procedure if managed by your dental team. We make
custom trays that help to hold the gel against the teeth increasing its effectiveness
and allowing the patient to remove excess from the gum tissue. The most common
side effect is some increased sensitivity during the process which is usually managed
by decreasing wear times and switching to a sensitive toothpaste for a short period.
Teeth whitening is one of the most cost effective ways to improve one’s appearance
and most achieve a very nice result.
What is one of the most important dental habits you often see patients failing to
do? Lack of daily flossing is tops on this list. Most people still don’t make flossing a
part of their daily routine. This can lead to decay, gum disease, and bad breath. The
number one reason that we take out most teeth today is advanced gum disease and is
easily prevented by simply flossing daily.
You emphasize patient education for better dental health, can you tell us what
is the current biggest threat to dental health? There are two big problems that I
am seeing regularly. Excessive soda drinking especially in the younger generation
is leading to extensive decay that often has to be treated by crowning the affected
teeth. Often by the time I see these patients the damage has already been done and
it is very difficult to manage without more aggressive dental treatment. The other
is extensive decay caused by taking multiple medications in the older population.
Most medications cause varying degrees of dry mouth. As more meds are added
the mouth dries out and decay gets out of control quickly again requiring extensive
dental treatment.
Finish this sentence: The best thing about Columbus is: Its blend of southern
hospitality with a professional climate, offering opportunities often only found in
larger cities. SVM
