The result was Needles,
featuring the sinister Dr. Au,
His second novel. High
Plastic straw and paperclips.
With these unlikely construction materials, more than 70
elementary students competed Wednesday to build the highest
tower possible in 45 minutes.
Not only did the tower have to be high, it had to be strong
enough and stable enough to support the weight of a raw egg.
The building activity was part of the first annual "Olympics
of the Mind," held at Voyageur school. It was an event organized
by Lynn.Fraser, coordinator of the gifted enrichment program
for School District 28. ,
The program, in its third year in Quesnel, is designed to provide
learning opportunities for students who need extension
beyond the regular school curriculum, explains Fraser.
Under this program students — not only the academically
gifted, but those with musical, artistic or any other talents — are
occasi' -^ally released from regular school activities in order to
participate in special learning activities.
"The program allows children to reach their potential. It gets
thern involved," says Fraser.
So far there has been no real procedure for identifying the
gifted chilrcn in area schools. However a screening process has
been undertaken this year at Voyageur school as part of a pilot
program. Children can also be nominated for the program by
parents, teachers and even by the children themselves.
"We are looking for children who show characteristics of
giftedness in diverse areas," says Fraser.
In the competition in question, the student not only had to
build the towers, they had toiecorate the eggs and afterwards
participated in a problem-solving competition.
After the construction frenzy had abated. Red Bluff had
taken top prize for its surprisingly strong 300 centimetre structure.
The students had to use a step ladder to perch the
decorated egg on top. Coming in second was Lakeview and
Voyageur was third.
In the egg decorating contest Riverview and Richbar tied for
third.
In the spontaneous problem solving portion of the contest
Dragon Lake came first. Red Bluff was second and Voyageur
was third.
Red Bluff was the overall winner at the competition with 522
aggregate points. Lakeview and Voyageur tied for second with
412 points.
About 8,0 per cent of breast
cancer can be cured if detected
early. Local resident Nora
Duncan is living proof.
By Alice Stoddard
Observer Contributor
Fifty-year-old Nora almost
didn't discover her cancer early
enough. A nagging lump in
her left breast was brought to
her attention in September,
1985. She chose to ignore it.
By December, due to several
ongoing stresses, she could no
longer ignore the obvious.
After a particularly upsetting
period her left arm swelled
three times its normal size.
Now, not only was the breast
sore, there was something
wrong.
A trip to her local doctor
didn't encourage her. His
response was she shouldn't
worry. It was probably stress
induced and as long as the
lumps were not sore she had
nothing to really concern
herself about.
In February, 1986, she went
to Williams Lake for a
mamography—an x-ray picture
of the breast. The results
of this technique led Nora and
her doctor to believe there was
nothing to be concerned
about.
- Nora was concerned. She
Jl felt more tired than usual, less
energetic and a general
malaise. Her doctor offered
two options: to watch the
lump and see what developed
or go ahead and do a biopsy.
She chose the biopsy. Her
instincts told her there was
more to this. The biopsy
would involve removing tissue
from the breast and the determining
of whether it was
benign or malignant.
"I knew I had cancer 10
days after the biopsy," says
Nora. "1 had arranged for a
quick appointment with my
surgeon but was stalled. I
knew then there was no doubt
in my mind it was malignant."
Her immediate reaction was
shock but not disbelief. She
said she had no difficulty
believing the diagnosis but she
had a hard time accepting all
the implications it presented.
Nora's doctor made the appointments
and referred her to
the Vancouver Cancer Clinic.
The two discussed at length
what the prognonis might be
and the options that would be
available. She might require
radiation therapy as well.
Therefore Nora's best option
was Vancouver.
During the surgery Nora
was told that a technique called
a lumpectomy, where only
the tumor and a, margin of
breast tissue around it are
removed, would be done only
if necessary. The glands, if affected
or benign lumps, would
also be removed.
In March, 1986, Nora Duncan
went through the lumpectomy
and the other procedures,
in Vancouver. Initially
she suffered severe pain but
the volunteer staff and professionals
at the Vancouver
Cancer Clinic were excellent.
"The support system at the
Vancouver Clinic was exceptional
and superior," says
• Nora. • •
Two weeks after surgery
Nora was to begin a series of
16 radiation therapy sessions.
The sessions were two minutes
in duration for a total time of
seven minutes. Again the support
staff were excellent in
their assistance with the cancer
patient in every way.
"Volunteers are particularly
helpful and empathetic
because they were usually
cancer patients themselves,"
she says.
Support sessions twice
weekly were strongly encouraged
and most helpful.
Dealing with the emotional,
physical, and financial implications
were made much
easier by the available and accessible
services of the Canadian
Cancer Society;
Years 1984 to 1986 has been
particularly stressful for this
lady. The loss of a child in
1984 was only the first in a
series of tragic blows that were
to befall her. The death,
divorce, and a life threatening
battle with cancer have given
Nora an entirely different
perspective.
"Radiation treatment progressively
makes you more and
more tired," says Nora. More
than a year later she still battles
what she describes as an
"eternal fati ue". Common
side affect of nausea didn't
cause Nora much problems.
She did however have horrendous
nightmares and
developed an intense shortterm
anger.
A deep suicidal depression
hovered over her for some
time. She sought help and got
it with medication. She strongly
felt this had been a big plus
in her progress to getting out
of her depressed state.
"This experience with
cancer has changed me and my
life dramatically!" says Nora.
If you suspect anything odd
or strange in your state of
health, check it out, particularly
The Cariboo Regional
District has given its
unanimous support to a pro
posal that would make this
region an international
cross-country ski centre.
And if the proposal suc
ceeds, the Cariboo could see
ipO-Mile-House become to
Cross Country Skiers, what
Whistler has for the downhill
enthusiasts.
CRD members were easily
swayed by persuasive
arguments from Cariboo
Tourists Association members
Pat Corbett and. ..G.ordon
region of having 100-Mile
House designated an interna
tional cross country skiing
site.
"This is a very huge, very
sigiiificant, we think, pro
posal, that will have impact on
investment in this region and
on jobs in this region," said
Corbett who also owns the
Hills Health and Guest Ranch
in the 108-Mile area.
"Gross-country is growing
at a rate three times as fast as
downhill skinng," he said. Ac
cording to the statistics he
quoted there were 3.2 million
cross-country skiers in 1981
compared to only two million
downhill skiers. In 1976 there
were 1.2 million downhillers
and only 1.3 million cross
country.
Corbett, referring to a
report prepared by the Canada
West Ski Association also
noted that there were more
bed nights sold to cross coun
try skiers than to downhillers.
Cross country skiers, he also
noted, tended to be better
educated and to come from
the higher income brackets.
"I can tell you, this report is
shaking up the industry," he
said.
What the Cariboo Tourist
Association is trying to do, he
explained, was influence the
amount of dollars the govern
ment puts into cross-country
skiing.
, If;,the lOO-Mile-Hduse-area i
was recognized by the provin
cial and federal governments
as an international cross
country site it would be eligi
