Welcome onboard DEPUTY CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
The MIS team at Brunei
International Airport.
Check out
eMuhibah at
www.bruneiair.com
MuhIbAh
Dear Guests,
On behalf of Royal Brunei Airlines, may I welcome
you on board your flight as we are pleased to play
host on your journey with us.
If you have booked flights online at bruneiair.
com recently, you may have noticed a change in
our website design and layout thanks to the hard
work of the talented staff in our Management
Information Systems (MIS) Department.
With 30 staff, the MIS team works tirelessly behind
the scenes as they provide IT support to all Royal
Brunei Airlines offices across our network. Vice
President Tommy Koh carries out the challenging
task of managing our extensive IT system. We are
now in the process of integrating a new flight
booking engine and over the next few months our
website, bruneiair.com, will become a one-stop
portal providing everything you need to enjoy a
perfect getaway.
This year the Rugby World Cup returns to New
Zealand for the first time since 1987. One of the
largest sporting events in the world, the game
awakens great passion among the fans. In our
article ‘Let them Roar’ we’ll introduce you to some
of the sporting venues that will play host to this
two-month long tournament which kicks off on
9 September.
On to shopping, another interest which also
stirs feelings of passion among many. A trip to
Melbourne will reveal that sometimes the best
shopping is outside the malls. Queen Victoria
Market, Praharn Market and many others are
still central to the city’s commerce and today the
extensive range of goods on sale still tempt
many visitors.
Now on to The Dorchester Hotel, housed in a
historic building in the centre of London, which is
celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. Join us as
we review key moments in the hotel’s history.
Shanghai is next, where visitors can enjoy a contrast
of old and new with the city divided into two
districts by the Huangpu River. To enjoy Shanghai
as the locals do, try experiences that really are
‘untours’, from visiting the Friday-only Muslim
market to jogging in the longtang. You’ll see the
city in a new light.
Finally we end up in Brunei, where the Sultanate
has launched its Islamic Tourism Package that will
allow tourists to experience Brunei’s Islamic nation
while visiting the many rich and historical Islamic
artefacts and attractions.
Have a pleasant journey.
With Warm Wishes,
Dermot Mannion
Deputy Chairman

For more than 130 years, rugby
has played a major role in the New
Zealand psyche; you never know
which way the ball is going to
bounce; Eden Park is the home of
the All Blacks.
Auckland’s on ‘Cloud’ nine,
Wellington’s launching a
waka, Nelson’s taking a long
Italian lunch, Bluff’s reserving
the juiciest oysters, Westland’s celebrating
whitebait, and people all over New Zealand are
dusting off their best home colours. As time ticks
away and the much anticipated 9 September
Rugby World Cup 2011 (www.rugbyworldcup.
com) opening date approaches, New Zealand is
warming up to welcome 85,000 international
visitors to the greatest event and biggest
celebration the country has ever staged.
New Zealand plans to turn the revered rugby
tournament into a national event with games
scheduled for 12 locations, and rugby teams
hosted in 23 towns and cities. The logistically
challenging match schedule will ensure that all
of New Zealand gets a taste of the rugby action,
and that visitors find plenty of opportunities to see
more of the country.
In the cities, game venues are readying for
big crowds and new fan zones are emerging.
Auckland is raising the ‘Cloud’ on Queen’s
Wharf to showcase New Zealand to the world.
Able to hold over 6,000 people, the ‘Cloud’ is
a multi-purpose venue that will also be used for
sector showcasing, exhibitions, events, concerts
and festivals. At the other end of the Viaduct
Harbour precinct, a new Events Centre will host
festival events. Wellington’s popular waterfront
area now boasts the Wharewaka – a distinctive
new structure designed to house a traditional
Maori waka/canoe that will provide a central
rugby village for fans. And, while it won’t be a
permanent fixture, Nelson is planning to turn an
aircraft hangar into an Italian city for a 48-hour
Italian festival to celebrate hosting the Italy rugby
team and the South Island city’s strong Italian
connections.
If you haven’t guessed it yet, rugby is New
Zealand’s national sport. The first rugby game
ever to be played in New Zealand was in
Nelson, a provincial city on the northern tip of
the South Island, in May 1870. By 1879, the
game’s popularity was spreading and the first
rugby unions were formed in Canterbury and
Wellington. The New Zealand Rugby Football
Union (NZRFU) was established in 1892.
A giant inflatable rugby ball underwent construction in New Zealand before being
shipped to Paris for the Rugby World Cup; the Westpac Stadium will host several games;
North Harbour Stadium seats 25,000; the Fjordland National Park provides a spectacular
backdrop for rugby at Lake Te Anau; whenever the All Blacks play, it seems the whole of
New Zealand is there in support.
MuhIbAh
Today, rugby is embedded in the hearts and
minds of Kiwis. Many New Zealanders would say
it is an integral part of the country’s culture. The
All Blacks, New Zealand’s national rugby team,
are one of the most feared opponents in the
rugby world. Seeing them on the field in their
black jerseys emblazoned with the silver fern,
performing the haka, stirs pride in the hearts of
Kiwis around the world.
For those who might not know how the game
is played – rugby is a rough and tumble game
consisting of 15 players each side, trying to get
an oval shaped (rugby) ball across the try line. The
Rugby World Cup tournament is the world’s third
largest sporting event, held every four years.
The 2011 Rugby World Cup tournament will kick
off at Eden Park in Auckland on 9 September,
2011; the final match will be played in the same
venue on 23 October, 2011. Altogether, 12
host towns and cities in different New Zealand
regions will help make the event a success. The
geographical spread – from Whangarei in the top
of the North Island to Invercargill at the bottom

of the South Island – reflects the New Zealand
Rugby Union’s desire to make the tournament a
nationally supported event. It also promises to take
the Kiwi love affair with the oval ball and the All
Blacks to new heights.
Running alongside the tournament will be the
REAL New Zealand Festival encompassing a
thousand regional events in urban and rural
locations all over the country. Festival events will
showcase New Zealand’s arts, food, heritage,
cultures, entertainment, enterprise, experiences
and lifestyle.
Thousands of New Zealanders are involved in
staging the varied festival programme which
includes everything from the internationallyrecognised
World of WearableArt in Wellington, to
quirky regional food festivals like the West Coast’s
Hokitika Wildfoods.
For art lovers, the Waikato Museum will deliver
an energetic, dynamic exhibition focusing on ‘the
national religion’. Rugby. Red, Yellow, (All) Black is
an interactive local take on the national game that
will have wide appeal. At Te Papa in Wellington,
visitors will learn how to haka as part of a new
exhibition at the national museum that explores
the haka’s meaning, origins and association with
rugby and the All Blacks.
The Oranges at Halftime is a travelling exhibition
that celebrates the grassroots origins of rugby in
New Zealand – white shorts, muddy paddocks,
dad on the sidelines, and mum serving oranges
and pies – with an engaging and humorous look
at what makes Kiwis tick.
And what is the World Cup without food. Visitors
looking to taste New Zealand’s best will find a
vast choice of regional events. During the rugby
tournament, farmers markets all over New Zealand
will be presenting ‘Out Standing in Their Field’
with cooking demonstrations by growers and
chefs using local fresh produce. Rugby fans in
Auckland will be able to experience Taste of New
Zealand, a three-day celebration of top restaurants
and fine produce that springs up on Victoria Park,
close to Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour. The full
programme details are at realnzfestival.com.
The six-week Rugby World Cup Tournament
2011 will be the biggest event ever held in New
Zealand. Whether you’re an All Blacks fan, a rugby
fan or not even close to understanding the game,
New Zealand is still the place to be in the next
two months.
The thing with big cities is that often times its modern
exterior tends to overwhelm the visitor into thinking
that they are just a labyrinth of highways, skyscrapers,
malls, and nothing else. Shanghai may seem to have fallen into such
a trap, but as any intrepid traveller knows, scratch the surface hard
enough and you’ll be rewarded plenty.
It takes serendipity and diligence to discover Shanghai’s hidden charms.
But, more often than not, you’ll get to experience the city beyond the
standard guidebook and that in itself, is precious. Take, for instance, the
running tour programme at UnTour Shanghai (www.untourshanghai.
com). Run by Jamie Barys and Kyle Long, the tour lets visitors discover
the sometimes intimidating urban landscape of Shanghai through a
jogging sightseeing excursion.
Come (a little) rain or shine, UnTour leads a group of running enthusiasts
through various neighbourhoods in the city from a different perspective.
The group is usually small, between one to seven people, allowing for a
more personal experience. The standard 10km route is the most popular,
but guests also have the opportunity to run the 15km route.
The run brings joggers through the beautiful French Concession where
guests can see the interesting architecture that exists there. They also go
through Fuxing Park, passing by senior citizens doing Tai Chi, practising
calligraphy on the sidewalk with big water brushes, and groups of ladies
dancing. Runners are also able to really run through the narrow alleys
and market streets in the Old Town and see how the city used to look
like. The pace is completely up to the guest, but you do need to be able
to run the distance that you’ve opted for. Of course, there are breaks in
between if you need to take pictures.
For an experience a little less harried, UnTour Shanghai organises a
market excursion to the Muslim Friday market that happens only, you
guessed it – on Fridays. This friendly foodie bazaar comes together
as Shanghai’s Muslim community congregate at the Huxi Mosque to
perform their special Friday prayers. The market is a heady adventure
of tastes, sights and smells. Vendors sell anything from succulent
Uyghur lamb kebabs to tasty naan breads and fried dumplings with
delicious meat filling. To cool off, there are doogh sellers busily
chipping away at their blocks of ice before filling a styrofoam bowl
with yoghurt and honey. Don’t leave without trying the carrot jiaozi
and langfen, cold shaved noodles topped with peanut sauce.
For those looking to engage with a local and discover Shanghai through
their eyes, then ToursbyLocals (www.toursbylocals.com) is your best
bet. The company is unique in the way that they employ guides who
are often members of the community where they work. There are a
vast option of private tours that can also be customised, allowing you
complete freedom to do and see what you want. More importantly,
these are for travellers that want to see more than just the sights who
will find having a local guide an advantage.
The guides themselves are enthusiastic and passionate people eager
to showcase their city to you and let you experience their community
from their point of view. A typical city tour takes on new levels
when ToursbyLocals guides share their invaluable insights otherwise
undiscovered from a guidebook. Every guide has a special story to tell,
and this gives value to the sightseeing. It also promotes ethical tourism
as travellers have the obligation to support the communities they visit.
Perhaps of all of Shanghai’s experiences, the one
that is so often overlooked for a novel and quick
introduction to the city is a tour of the city on a
red double decker bus. The Big Bus Tours (www.
bigbustours.com) may be a surprise choice for
many, but because the route allows you to hop
on and off at any time makes this one of the best
ways to see Shanghai like never before.
Sure the route follows many of the city’s
landmarks (a big plus to orientate yourself), but
the idea is to hop off at any of the 22 stops and let
your spirit of adventure guide you. At the People’s
Square stop, for example, a stroll into one of the
streets will bring you to a quaint mosque where
an old Uyghur lady sells delicious Xinjiang bread
that’s a cross between a pretzel and a bagel. Turn
the corner and you’ll find a shop selling Chinese
tea sets for a song – no bargains needed. Just arm
yourself with a good map and let your curiosity
colour your life.
The scope and diversity of
Melbourne’s markets is a
testament to the shopper-friendly
Melbourne’s markets are an integral mix that has
helped to define the city’s unique character. Come
the weekends, you will find locals and visitors alike
trawling their way through one of the myriad of
markets and soaking up the atmosphere.
The most well known of these markets is the
Queen Victoria Market that’s been running since
1878. In fact, if you have time only to visit one
market, make this the one. Spread across seven
hectares, the market is home to around 1,000
traders. Queen Vic, as it’s affectionately known
locally, is also aptly named, not just because
it’s the largest open-air market in the Southern
Hemisphere, but for what it represents. At this
market, you’ll find flavours and produce of the
world, sold by people from all walks of life,
background and nationalities that have made
Melbourne their home.
The Queen Victoria Market is best visited early on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays
or Saturdays for fresh meat, seafood, produce and gourmet goods that make
up the heart of the market. The other part of the market is dedicated to
stalls selling a variety of specialty goods including clothing, leather goods,
handicrafts, jewellery and fabrics. Sundays are the most popular day for this
type of shopping. You’ll also get a different vibe to the market when you visit
on a Sunday. The hustle and bustle of the weekday is replaced with a more
relaxed and leisurely atmosphere, perfect for a family outing. The Queen Street
side of the market turns into a pedestrian mall with tables and chairs arranged
into an outdoor cafe. There are also children’s rides and other activities to while
the time away.
Almost as old as Queen Victoria Market and equally popular with the locals is
the South Melbourne Market. Opened in 1867, the market has grown in size
and reputation and is regarded today as one of Melbourne’s best fresh produce
markets. Some of the stallholders are third generation marketers, adding a
friendly atmosphere to the market with their broad knowledge in goods and
camaraderie with the locals.
The Esplanade Market in St Kilda, happening
every Sunday at 10am, is great to browse for
original gifts, handmade crafts or just for treating
yourself to beautiful finds. The market is a gem
of a showcase of art and crafts by local artisans.
There are handmade jewellery, prints, paintings,
bags, brooches, fashion accessories, wood crafts
and souvenirs. What makes the visit interesting is
that the market looks out over Port Phillip Bay and
is just a short stroll away from many great cafes
and eateries on Fitzroy Street and Acland Street,
making this a great weekend outing.
Art lovers will find the bohemian and eclectic Rose
Street Artists Market more up their alley. It opens
every Saturday and is inspired by similar markets
in New York and London that provide emerging
artists and designers a platform to reach out to
a wider audience. Buyers benefit by buying from
the artists direct, avoiding hefty commissions,
while the artists can sell their creations directly
to the public. Each week, up to 70 artists and
designers set up stalls at a former junkyard on the
backstreets of Fitzroy, an easy walking distance
from Melbourne’s CBD.
meLBouRNe mARkeT-sT kILdA mARkeT

On offer are the best in Melbourne designs
and ideas, with crafts ranging from the quirky
to the inventive. Many of the works on display
are high quality originals, and with more than
400 contributing artists and designers taking
part throughout the year, it’s a great excuse to
return for future visits just to check on what’s
new. Notable finds include funky one-offs
such as homeware made from fabrics printed
in Melbourne, wallets made from recycled car
upholstery, and old dominoes and Scrabble pieces
reborn as necklaces or cufflinks. The market also
has live entertainment and a gourmet cafe for you
to take a breather from shopping and browsing.
For many Melburnians, going to the markets is
part of life. And there are a staggering number of
markets in the city to choose from. With each one
interesting, unique and different, they nevertheless
reflect the excitement of Melbourne life and
culture. You’ll never find a better place to pass
the time and soak the local culture than at the
markets. Just make sure you bring an
Over the last few years Belfast What
has been transformed with
a whole generation of new
visitor attractions. These along with the city’s
fascinating cultural heritage have made Belfast
a great place to visit. But one thing that has
always been on offer is the unique warmth and
friendliness of the people.
Getting to Belfast couldn’t be easier, particularly
connecting through the UK. Belfast’s two airports
(Belfast International and George Best Belfast
City) both have connections to London Heathrow
and many other regional airports. Once in Belfast,
it couldn’t be easier to get around, either. With
a core population of just 300,000, Belfast is
extremely compact and therefore pleasantly
walkable, with many attractions and places of
interest within 15-20 minutes of each other
– perfect for those on a short break.
Belfast has excellent bus and rail network.
Visitors can avail themselves of special freedom
of Northern Ireland tickets entitling them to
reduced fare travel. For those in a hurry, there are
plenty of taxis to get you to your appointment
on time, call Value Cabs (028 9080 9080) on the
many free phones around the city to ensure a
professional service.
might surprise some is Belfast’s link to the
legendry ship Titanic. The Titanic was built in
Belfast’s Harland and Wolff shipyard, the world’s
best shipbuilders of the era. This year marks the
centenary of the launching of the ship in her home
port and next year Belfast will mark the centenary
of her tragic maiden voyage with the opening of
an exciting new visitor attraction, Titanic Belfast
in April 2012. The Lagan Boat Company operates
Titanic Tours on board their somewhat smaller vessel
the Joyce II and self-professed ‘Titanorak’ (Titanicobsessed
individuals), Colin Cobb, takes walking
tours of the docks and Thompson Pumhouse.
Much of Belfast’s heritage surrounds the port
but now the present is making the most of the
location. The oldest part of the city, the Cathedral
Quarter, with its cobbled lanes, is becoming a
hub for entertainment and arts. Home to the
fringe style Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival that
takes place every May, the area offers a mix of
hip restaurants, contemporary art galleries and
dynamic businesses. The area around the noble
Customs House has recently been reclaimed as a
piazza style square offering more open space for
pedestrians to relax and enjoy the architecture.
For those who may have visited Belfast prior
to the Millennium, they’d be hard pushed to
recognise it now. State of the art venues such
of restaurants and cafes have brought Belfast into
the 21st century. World class entertainers and
performances now choose to come to Belfast,
with recent visits from Lionel Ritchie, Anastacia
and Andrea Bocelli.
Belfast hotels have also enjoyed a resurgence
after Frommer’s named the city one of Europe’s
top city break destinations in 2009. Apart from
the growing portfolio of international chains,
such as the Hilton, Holiday Inn, RadissonBLU and
Premier Inn brightening up the skyline over the
last few years, locally-owned hotels have also
freshened the hotel scene. The Merchant Hotel
is a sumptuous hotel with imposing Victorian
architecture and five-star service to match. A
massive extension last year has rooms in sleek
Art Deco theme, including a spa and a gym for
guests. The Ten Square Hotel Belfast opens the
design floodgates for future boutique hotels while
the sexy UK chain Malmaison offers sophisticated
and exclusive accommodation perfect for the cool
crowd. However, if you are looking for a more
personal welcome, there are plenty of homely
guesthouses and B&Bs to invite you in.
When it comes to sightseeing and shopping,
Belfast offers the best in both. Spend a while
amid the Victorian and Edwardian buildings of
the capital city. A splendid example of Edwardian
renaissance, Belfast’s City Hall was built in 1906.
On the slopes of Cave Hill, Belfast Castle offers
a great vantage point over Belfast Lough to the
County Down Coast. Behind the castle, Belfast
Zoo is a splendid haven for exotic and endangered
animals, within an idyllic park setting. Other
buildings of interest include Stormont Parliament
buildings; the Linen Hall Library, the oldest
subscribing library in Ireland; and Clifton House,
the city’s original poor house.
Belfast’s Botanic Gardens, where the restored Palm
House is a masterpiece of Victorian architecture in
the same vein as Kew Gardens in London, offers a
tranquil respite from the buzz of the city centre. Its
neighbour, the Ulster Museum, is a treasure trove
of interesting artefacts and 20th century art. For
the young at heart, W5 is Ireland’s only interactive
discovery centre that provides hands-on fun in
learning about science and the world around.
Belfast is a haven for shoppers, too. The city
centre has an unrivalled concentration of leading
international chains, mixed with an excellent
O ne of the world’s most iconic hotels, The Dorchester, opened in a swirl
of art deco glamour in 1931. Since then, The Dorchester’s combination
of elegant luxury, sumptuous decor and unrivalled standards of personal
service has made it more than a constant venue for the famous and influential – for many, it has
become a regular ‘home away from home’.
Royalty and political leaders, both British and foreign, have been frequent visitors. Princess
Elizabeth, the present Queen, attended a dinner party at The Dorchester the day before her
engagement was announced on 10 July 1947, and it was here too, that Prince Philip celebrated
his stag night on the eve of his wedding. Hollywood royalty, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton,
made this their home when in London. It was here that she hammered a nail above the fireplace
to hang a Van Gogh painting from Sotheby’s on Bond Street to surprise Burton. Perhaps what
was more incredible was the fact she simply took the painting back in a taxi!
Insider nuggets such as these only add to The Dorchester’s mystic. But The Dorchester hotel
guests are only part of the legend. There still remains many facets to the hotel, such as its decor
and design, including the London Plane tree in the front garden, that have made this hotel an
icon. Named one of the ‘Great Trees of London’ by The London Tree Forum and The Countryside
Commission in 1997, it was deemed so significant that in 2000, the BBC dedicated an entire
programme to the tree as part of its series Meetings with Remarkable Trees.
So when The Dorchester prepared to celebrate its 80th Anniversary in 2011, it took inspiration
from this landmark tree. Collaborating with international charity Trees for Cities (TfC). The
Dorchester will plant 80 new ‘Future Great Trees’ in London, beginning November 2011. Fifteen
of these will be planted in Mayfair and St. James’s to form ‘The Dorchester Anniversary Walk’
while a further 65 trees will be planted across London in areas to be identified by Trees for Cities.
TfC Chief Executive Sharon Johnson said, “The Dorchester’s gift of 80 majestic, longliving,
large canopy trees will provide clean air and help enhance the London cityscape
for hundreds of years to come.” Meanwhile, the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson,
commented, ”This is a fantastic commemoration which will leave a wonderfully leafy
legacy for generations to enjoy. Trees deliver a range of benefits to improve quality of
life which is why I have committed to plant 10,000 new street trees across the capital
by 2012.”
The famous Plane tree is also the inspiration for The Dorchester’s Anniversary
Champagne Afternoon Tea. Inherently British, The Dorchester is renowned for its
award-winning Afternoon Tea and keeps the service seasonal and entertaining
throughout the year by recognising key social calendar events. The Champagne
Afternoon Tea features an exclusive Ceylon tea blend alongside finger sandwiches,
scones made from a recipe unchanged at The Dorchester for over 50 years and delicate
pastries. Guests can look forward to having a commemorative Anniversary Tea Caddy
containing the tea blend to enjoy at home. Proceeds will go towards The Dorchester’s
80th Anniversary commemorative ‘Future Great Trees’ project and the hotel will be
unveiling a number of ways guests can participate in the 80th Anniversary celebrations
and further support the planting legacy over the next few months.
In 2011 The Dorchester will also be renovating a number of suites under the design
direction of Alexandra Champalimaud, refreshing the hotels inherently British,
classic residential style. This will further accommodate recent refurbishments at
While many of The Dorchester’s areas may be off limits to guests, that will change
on 19 September when 20 lucky ballot winners get a private behind-the-scenes tour
of the hotel and its restaurants and spa as part of Open House London. For the third
consecutive year, The Dorchester is participating in Open House London celebrating
the great design and architecture of the capital city, by providing complimentary and
exclusive access to buildings, places and neighbourhoods that normally are not open
to the public.
To be hosted by Thomas Messel, nephew of renowned theater set designer Oliver
Tourism is, by nature, without boundaries. As the modes of
travelling continue to make the world a more accessible
place, the number of people travelling has also increased.
With the influx of globetrotters, the types of tourism that people opt for has
also expanded. Ecotourism, extreme tourism and heritage tourism are just
a few examples found today as they are largely dependent on interest. But
what is certain is that the destinations where one could travel to should never
be limited and restricted.
But travelling is trickier for Muslim travellers. A major concern to most Muslim
travellers is not in the destination itself, but in the halal aspect of it. With the
growing number of Muslim families looking for Shariah-compliant holidays,
halal tourism, or Islamic tourism, is swiftly becoming more prominent in the
tourism industry.
New buzzwords in hospitality such as Shariah-compliant hotels – where
hotel operators offer services that include, but not limited to, placing the
Holy Quran in bedroom drawers and providing kiblat signs (prayer direction),
prayer mats and ablution facilities on hotel premises – is fast catching on. Yet
halal tourism is more than this. It encompasses all aspects of the Muslim life,
from a family friendly travel environment to separate male-female swimming
facilities, and of course, halal food.
Without a doubt, the world’s 1.6 billion strong Muslim population is pushing
the growth of the market for halal tourism, estimated to be worth about
US$100 billion. This augurs well for Brunei Darussalam, one of the more
prominent Islamic nations in Southeast Asia.
With its rich Islamic and Malay cultural heritage, Brunei is the ideal place for
a wholesome, halal holiday experience. Graced with some of Southeast Asia’s
most iconic modern mosques, collections of precious ancient artefacts and
relics, the Sultanate is also the only country with the oldest and last remaining
sovereign Malay Islamic monarchy. Muslims account for approximately 74 per
cent of Brunei’s population and it is reflected in the country’s lifestyle.
Brunei Darussalam is a country known for its beautiful mosques. The
resplendent Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque and the Jame’ Asr Hassanil
Bolkiah Mosque are fine examples of the best in Islamic architecture. The
former is influenced by Italian, Mughal and Islamic architectural designs and
appears to be floating on a serene lagoon. Its golden dome is made of clear
glass mosaic tiles that protect the actual golden leaves beneath it and has
become an iconic landmark to Brunei. Equally arresting are the golden domes
and minarets of the Jame’ Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque with its colourful
mosaic tiles and eight-pointed stars.
Brunei’s Islamic heritage is carefully preserved in
the Brunei History Centre, Brunei Museums and
the Royal Regalia Building. Visitors can learn more
about Brunei’s rich history and its monarchy from
these places. For those with an interest in the
country’s collection of Islamic artefacts, a visit to
Darul ‘lfta Building is certainly enlightening. The
centre showcases over 300 rare mushaf (Quran
manuscripts) including an exquisite collection
of miniature Quran, some of which are several
centuries old. Visitors can also find ancient
astrolabes used by early Islamic astronomists on
display alongside finely made prayer beads and
walking sticks.
Most eatery establishments in Brunei are halal,
making it easy for the Muslim traveller to move
around. Restaurants undergo a strict and thorough
screening process before being awarded a halal
certification. Any restaurant serving non-halal
food is required to place signs that clearly indicate
that the establishment caters strictly to non-
Muslims. Further reflecting the country’s Islamic
values, Royal Brunei Airlines, the flag carrier of
the Sultanate of Brunei, also provides halal meals
onboard all flights and serves no alcohol. Guests
can also look forward to the inflight entertainment
that contains Islamic contents while prayer times
can be obtained from the cabin crew or the pilot
to facilitate prayers onboard.
MuhIbAh
The majority of the hotels in Brunei also cater
to Muslims, with translations of the Quran,
kiblat signs and prayer mats made available
in the rooms. The sale of alcohol is prohibited
throughout the Sultanate; nor are they served in
hotels. During the month of Ramadhan, hotels
offer pre-dawn meals for Muslim travellers and
announce the breaking of fast with the call of
azan (prayer).
Many of Brunei’s halal and Islamic tourism
products are already in place. With the growing
demand for halal tourism worldwide, Brunei
would only stand to benefit by attracting an
increasing number of tourists hungry for halal
products and services, and the chance to
experience a holistic Islamic vacation.
dengan peningkatan sektor pelancongan
membuka pintu luas di atas pentas dunia.
Teks KIM LOW
Pelancongan, secara asasnya, memang tidak bersempadan.
Dunia kini semakin mudah diterokai dengan pelbagai kaedah
pengangkutan dan ini juga meningkatkan bilangan pengunjung
yang giat menjelajah ke seluruh pelusuk dunia. Dengan pengunjung kian
bertambah pesat, jenis-jenis pelancongan perlu juga diperluaskan. Ekopelancongan,
kemudahan mengambil wuduk, kini semakin popular. Tetapi pelancongan halal
bukannya terbatas kepada ini sahaja. Ia meliputi semua aspek kehidupan Islam,
bermula dari persekitaran perjalanan yang selamat dan selesa untuk pelancong
berkeluarga hinggalah ke kolam renang berasingan untuk lelaki dan perempuan,
serta makanan halal.
The
Lightness
of Being
honda, the brand often associated with
motorcycles and cars, takes to the skies with
its first ever light business jet, the hondaJet.
Since 1986, honda has been engaged in the
research and development of aircraft as a
next-generation mobility technology. Work
began on its first ever light business jet in 1997, headed by
michimasa Fujino, who is today regarded as the mastermind
behind hondaJet. And now, after years of waiting, aviation
enthusiasts can look forward to honda’s re-think of a private
jet taking flight soon.

most recently, the five-seat hondaJet made its first FAA-certified test flight, achieving a top
speed of 489 miles per hour at 30,000 feet – by far surpassing the CBR sport bike, the Acura
NsX sportscar and honda F1 cars as the fastest thing the company has ever produced!
The hondaJet is immediately recognised for its over-the-wing engine-mount design. This
potentially maximises interior space (without increasing the overall jet size) and increases
the aerodynamic efficiency by 5 percent. honda says this configuration, combined with the
aircraft’s ‘natural-laminar flow’ airfoil and nose design, reduces drag and ground-noise,
improves fuel efficiency, keeps emissions low and out-performs clean-wing designs.
The wings’ key feature and design balances in such a way that the speed of the aircraft has
a range about 40 percent greater than any existing aircraft of this build. The combination of
its lightweight materials, engine layout and aerodynamics only confirms that honda has the
potential and capabilities to create a new model for all future aircraft rather than just the
current field of aircraft jets.
Power is provided by ge honda hF 120 Turbofan engines producing 1,880 lb of thrust
each and inside there’s executive seating for four plus a honda-customised garmin g3000
all-glass avionics system which includes three 14-inch landscape-format displays with dual
touch-screen control. It also employs the first ultra-compact Full Authority digital electronic
Control (FAdeC) system for its class. This provides outstanding efficiency and reliability.
“We are extremely pleased with the strong performance of the FAA-conforming hondaJet
early in the flight test programme,” said michimasa Fujino, honda Aircraft Company President
& Ceo. “our flight tests indicate the aircraft is handling and performing as expected, with
excellent control harmony and stability. The hondaJet’s unique over-the-wing engine mount
configuration and natural laminar-flow leading edge and fuselage nose designs significantly
reduce drag and greatly contribute to such outstanding performance. In addition, the
hondaJet’s hF120 engines are exhibiting carefree handling of thrust and are supporting toplevel
performance and efficiency.”
Presently, honda Aircraft Company, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of honda motor
Company, Ltd., has amassed orders for well over 100 hondaJet advanced light business
jets. scheduled for first delivery in the third quarter of 2012, the us$4.5 million hondaJet is
honda’s first-ever commercial aircraft and lives up to the company’s reputation for dynamic
performance together with superior efficiency.
Audi has successfully
entered a new
vehicle class. The
compact A1 unites all of the strengths of the
brand – a progressive design, uncompromising
quality and groundbreaking efficiency – in a space
measuring 3.95 metres in length.
After less then a year in the market, the A1 has
already won numerous awards, including the
‘Auto Trophy’ from Auto Zeitung, the ‘Golden
Steering Wheel’ from Auto Bild and Bild am
Sonntag and the ‘Car of the Year Award’ from
What Car? It was also voted as one of the ‘Best
Cars of 2011’ by the readers of Auto Motor
Und Sport. The A1 also received the top five star
rating in the Euro NCAP crash test.
The design with the encircling shoulder line is
cutting-edge and integrates the Audi A1 into
the large model family. The front end with the
dominating single-frame grille, the side line with
the distinctive roof arch, the coupe-like C-pillars
and the large wheel arches are among its defining
style elements while the hood and the rear hatch
wrap around the body. Audi offers the xenon plus
headlights with LED daytime running light strips
and LED tail lights. The tail lights are already threedimensionally
styled in the base model and are
unmistakable, day or night.
High- and ultra high-strength steels comprise twothirds
of the compact model’s body. The strongest
of these are the hot-shaped steels, which draw
their extremely high tensile strength from a
dramatic temperature increase during the shaping
process. Hot-shaped steels are used primarily
within the passenger cell. They provide the basis
for the precise, sporty handling, the good comfort,
the quiet interior, the excellent passive safety and
the low base weight.
The interior of the Audi A1 is spacious, bright
and airy. The instrument panel bears hints of
an airplane wing; its four round air vents are
reminiscent of jet engines. The clean, clear
controls are every bit a classic Audi design
of superior workmanship with many lovingly
designed details underscoring the premium
character of the A1.
The Audi A1 1.4 TFSI engine with 90kW (122 hp),
offered in Brunei, is available with the seven-speed
S tronic dual-clutch transmission. The dual-clutch
transmission shifts extremely quickly, comfortably
and with no perceptible interruption to the flow
of power. It can be operated as an automatic
or manual, with paddles on the steering wheel
available as an option. Thanks to its high efficiency
and the intelligent control system, the S tronic also
helps to reduce fuel consumption.
Whether in the city, on an interurban road or on
the expressway – the small compact is always
great fun to drive thanks to its sporty setup, the
favourable weight distribution and the directratio
steering. The vehicle sprints from zero to
100 km/h in 8.9 seconds.’ The ESP stabilisation
programme with electronic limited slip
differential, which comes standard on all models,
makes the handling even more precise while also
enhancing driving safety. It minimises under steer
at the cornering limit by means of slight braking,
which also improves traction.
Innovative materials and modern colours
emphasise the youthful character of the Audi
A1. Whether colour-coordinated air vents, LED
interior lights or seat covers in expressive colours
– customisation is the key. The equipment
programme offers countless opportunities for
matching the A1 to the driver’s own personal style.
There are even a variety of paint finishes from
which to choose for the roof arch. Customers can
also order many features after the initial sale to
follow a trend or a whim.
Six packages will be available in Brunei: Audi
exclusive line, Media style package, Lifestyle kit
union square, S line sports package, Competition
kit and even a Wasabi green package. The
available infotainment and multimedia systems for
the Audi A1 come directly from the full-size class.
The top of the line is MMI navigation plus, a media
centre that sets new standards in the compact
segment. It borrows closely from the system used
in Audi’s A8 flagship, including the monitor that
folds out from the instrument panel and the
control unit, which uses MMI logic.
The connectivity package, which is based on the
concert radio, includes a navigation preparation
kit that allows the customer to later install a
map-based navigation system – that, too, is a new
idea. The optional 465 watt Bose surround sound
system with 14 speakers is just one example of
the additional high-end complementary features
available. Convenient Bluetooth and wired
interfaces are available for cellular phones and
external players such as the iPod.
liFestyle IN PERSON
Battle Cry
he began a fitness revolution in Australia that is now ranked globally as one of the
year’s hottest fitness trends. known simply as chief brabon, the founder and global
master trainer of oRIgINAL BooTCAmP speaks to muhibah on the world’s longest
running and most successful military inspired outdoor fitness programme.
WoRds AnIS rAMLI | PhoTogRAPhs OrIGInAL bOOtCAMP
For those still in the dark, what is
‘fitness bootcamp’?
ORIGINAL BOOTCAMP is a military
inspired outdoor group personal training
programme that utilises discipline as
its primary source of motivation. It has
been scientifically designed to achieve
results fast no matter what your current
fitness level, in a positive and social
environment.
Your first OrIGInAL bOOtCAMP
was on military base with army
spouses wanting a similar militarystyle
fitness programme. Was this
the turning point for you to begin a
fitness bootcamp for the public?
Up until then I hadn’t really thought too
much about training civvies (civilians).
When I started training the army spouses
I simply trained them the same way I
trained my fellow soldiers. I used the
same exercises, activities and discipline,
and they loved it. That was when I
realised that there was a real market for
military inspired training.
have you ever wondered why no
one ever thought of the bootcamp
idea earlier?
I knew of a few bootcamps in the US
run by former Special Forces soldiers, but
it seemed as though very few soldiers
at the time had the background in
fitness training to combine their military
experience with the science of strength
and conditioning.
What’s the biggest misconception
people have about bootcamps
in general?
That the instructors yell, scream
and belittle the Recruits. ORIGINAL
MuhIbAh
BOOTCAMP is all about empowering
individuals, not breaking them down.
Our goal is to push Recruits beyond the
excuses to achieve the goals that up until
now have been just beyond their grasp.
how different are you from
other bootcamps?
Unlike the majority of programmes out
there calling themselves ‘bootcamp’,
ORIGINAL BOOTCAMP is based on
cutting edge strength and conditioning
concepts used by the world’s most elite
Special Forces, Special Operations and
SWAT teams. All programming is created
by leading military fitness specialists, not
just civilians who have watched a lot of
movies like GI Jane. Subsequently, no
other programme can match the level of
results our Recruits achieve.

What do you hope your ‘recruits’
take with them from every session?
I personally designed each session to not
only provide the best workout possible,
but also to help Recruits to connect,
support and motivate each other. When
Recruits finish each session they should
feel a real sense of accomplishment and
self-belief.
Are the fitness challenges designed in
such a way that you cannot beat the
system?
No matter what your fitness
or motivation level, ORIGINAL
BOOTCAMP is going to be a challenge.
Ultimately, if your training was easy, then
you will plateau. This programme has
been designed to keep you guessing,
physically and mentally, so that you
continue to improve.
What does one look for when
‘shopping’ for a programme?
There are two main types of ‘Bootcamps’:
Military Inspired Training and General
Outdoor Training. Obviously ORIGINAL
BOOTCAMP is a military inspired
programme. This sort of programme
focuses on high intensity training, but
that doesn’t mean you need to already
be fit to attend. The programme was
designed to start off at a lower intensity
and gradually build.
When looking for a military inspired
bootcamp, you should ensure that the
programme’s designers or master trainers
have real military experience to ensure
that the programme focuses on results,
rather than just ‘playing soldier’.
A recent uSA survey described
bootcamp as the top 2011 fitness
trend. Why do you think this has so
much appeal?
I think bootcamps appeal to people for a
number of reasons:
Discipline. Be honest; if we were
disciplined enough ourselves, we’d all
already be fit.
Camaraderie. Sharing the experience and
the achievements with a group of fellow
Recruits provide you with a lot of support
and encouragement.
Results. Ultimately, bootcamps should
make you work hard. Anything worth
having should take a little hard work.
What aspect of bootcamp do you
most love?
I love seeing just how surprised people
are at what they can achieve. This week
I got a big hug from one of my Recruits
who lost over 18kgs in just 8 weeks.
He is now the lightest he’s been in almost
20 years.
OrIGInAL bOOtCAMP is the largest
fitness bootcamp in Australia, and
you’ve already got a Malaysian
(known as ChIEF’s OrIGInAL
bOOtCAMP) and uS franchise. Where
else are you looking to expand?
We currently have License applications
from a number countries in Asia including
Singapore, Hong Kong, the Philippines
and Thailand. We also have applications
from Egypt, the UK, the US, Canada,
Chile and South Africa. Over the next 12
months we plan to expand into at least
half a dozen new countries, if not more.
Looking back, what would you say
surprised you most about OrIGInAL
bOOtCAMP’s success?
When I first started bootcamp most
people said that it wouldn’t work
because people just don’t like being told
what to do. What I have now found is
the opposite is true. People want to be
told how to achieve their goals. They
want to be pushed beyond the point that
they would normally quit, and they want
to simply put their trust in you and simply
do what they are told.
You’ve helped so many people
transform. What do you want to see
change in your life?
My goal over the next six months is to
find more time for me and my family
by trusting in the fantastic team I
have around me to keep ORIGINAL
BOOTCAMP at the top of its game.
• Two Boeing 737 aircraft were put
into service, flying five times a week
to Singapore, two times to Hong
Kong, three times to Kuching and
seven times to Kota Kinabalu.
• Services to Bangkok and Manila
were added in 1977.
Royal Brunei Airlines operates alcohol-free
flights to all destinations.
• RBA added a Boeing 737, the quick-change
convertible aircraft, to its fleet. This aircraft
allowed for either an all-passenger or an all-cargo
configuration or a combination of both.
• RBA accepted the delivery of its Boeing 757 aircraft
that featured redesigned livery combining Brunei’s
traditional Royal colours on 16 May, 1986.

Special Meals
Royal Brunei offers a variety of tasty culinary
solutions to suit our passengers’ special dietary
requirements. Special meals can be ordered
when you make your reservation; please
confirm your request at least 24 hours before
boarding your flight.
hand Luggage
For your safety and comfort, you may store
your hand luggage in the overhead lockers
or under the seat in front of you. Please
do not hesitate to ask our cabin crew for
help in stowing your luggage properly. Be
careful when opening the overhead luggage
compartments, as items dislodged by
aircraft movement may fall on you or fellow
passengers.
Liquids, Aerosols and Gels (LAG)
Various countries have implemented
restrictions on the carriage of liquids, aerosols
and gels in compliance with new guidelines set
by the International Civil Aviation Organization
(ICAO). Passengers transiting through airports
and carrying any liquids, pastes and gels
in containers over 100ml may be asked to
dispose of the items at security checkpoints.
These restrictions may affect your ability to
carry duty-free purchases onboard the aircraft.
Customers are advised to check with duty free
personnel before making their purchases. All
liquids, aerosols and gels must be carried in
containers of no greater than 100ml/3.3oz
capacity (approximately 100gm in weight)
and placed in a transparent, resealable plastic
bag. The plastic bag must be removed from
carry on baggage and presented to security
use of Electronic Equipment
Mobile phones cannot be used at any time
Welcome onboard
Abode of Peace
Brunei darussalam is a country rich in culture and heritage.
It is a small, peaceful, prosperous kingdom on the northern
shore of the ecologically-rich island of Borneo. Come and
discover Brunei, a kingdom of unexpected Treasures.
Brunei is arguably best known today as an oil producing
country. The nation became independent in 1984 and,
thanks to its large reserves of oil and gas, now has one of the
highest standards of living in the world. Its population is just
over 370,000, made up of two-thirds ethnic Malay, with the
remainder being Chinese, Indian and other indigenous groups.
The Sultanate has four districts: Brunei-Muara (which includes
the capital Bandar Seri Begawan), Temburong, Tutong and
Belait. ‘Darussalam’, the Arabic word for ‘Abode of Peace’
describes Brunei’s Islamic history that dates back some 1,500
years. Today, Brunei remains the world’s only Malay Islamic
Monarchy with an unbroken royal lineage that has ruled the
nation for the past 600 years.
