The elections for the Board of Directors were held in
early July for the 2012/2014 term. With the exception
of Vice President Lyle orreal, who did not seek reelection,
all members of the incumbent board were reelected.
Director Graham Lee has been elected to the
vacant position of Vice President and Brett Kenworthy
has come on board as a director to replace Graham. I thank
the members who have taken the time to vote this year, thus
confirming their support for the work that the board has done in the last two
years of their tenure.
I would like to thank all members of the board for their service to members and
for their dedication and tenacity during a difficult two years. The board now has a
mandate to continue to improve facilities for members and to take the club into
the future.
Directors Graham Lee and John Faulkner along with Acting Marketing Manager
Laura Burgett recently conducted interviews for this year’s Kokoda Trek, which is
arranged by the RSL and Services Clubs Association which our club is a member
of. I am pleased to announce that Ellen Stiller has been selected to represent the
club this year.
As always I look forward to seeing you around the club. If you have any questions
please ask myself or any member of the board, we are your representatives.
Certainly if you have any issues during your visit to the club there are managers
on duty at all times who can assist you with your enquiry. The club always likes to
receive compliments, but if you do have any complaints please let us know so it
can be rectified. You, the member, are our best advertisement.
Kokoda Youth Leadership Challenge 2012
For the past three years the Bathurst RSL Club has selected a local community
or staff member to take on the RSL & Services Clubs Association’s Kokoda Youth
Leadership Challenge. This year’s Trek has special significance as it is the 70th
anniversary of the Kokoda Campaign and for our selected recipient, Ellen Stiller,
there will be no greater honour than to be able to follow in the footsteps of her
relatives who were involved in the Campaign, “From a young age I have always
felt an emotional connection to the Kokoda Trail and I believe both my Great
uncle’s, Clarence Morton and Michael Morton’s contributions in Kokoda is one
of the reasons” said Ellen.
The objective of the Kokoda Youth Leadership Challenge is to identify young
people within the community who are potential leaders, and who have an
ability to both inspire and educate other young people in their local communities.
Ellen is aiming to use the skills she gains from the experience in her career as she studies to become a
Primary School Teacher. “I want to keep the spirit of the Kokoda Trek alive in the younger generation and
what better way to do it then actually experience it for myself, and hopefully inspire others to take up
the challenge”.
Preparing for the challenge, Ellen is aware of the physical and mental strain that comes with completing
the Kokoda Trek. Ellen will definitely be up to the challenge physically, having undertaken full time
training and playing on the national Tennis Circuit in 2008 as well as taking part in Triathlons and
Marathons. No stranger to international travel, Ellen spent a period living and attending school in
England and extensively travelling through Europe, Vietnam and Thailand, “the learning and growth
that comes from travelling requires some venturing into the unknown. I know this experience will be
challenging but it will lead to new perspectives, personally and for my future career as a Teacher”.
When asked what motivated her to apply Ellen answers, “This opportunity is beyond a dream to me. I am
a history fanatic and I have always had a burning desire to spread the legacy of our Australian Diggers
who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the brutal conditions of the Kokoda Campaign. This opportunity is
going to give me the chance to do just that”
Ellen’s passion and motivation to complete the trek is obvious when she speaks about her family
background and passion for history “I will carry my family’s legacy with me forever, and I always refer
back to it for motivation and courage to keep going in times of hardship”.
The RSL & Services Clubs Kokoda Youth Leadership Challenge is taking place from the 24th September
until the 5th october and we wish Ellen the very best with her preparations.
A popular urban myth concerns a group of art
order to con the local publican into giving them a
The deception worked better than intended,
