A record of the risk assessment must be made <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the:<br />
• date and outcomes of the assessment<br />
• product name of substance<br />
• control measures for manag<strong>in</strong>g the risk<br />
• details of any moni<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g or health surveillance<br />
needed.<br />
What are the controls?<br />
The follow<strong>in</strong>g controls may be implemented <strong>to</strong> manage<br />
exposure <strong>to</strong> hazardous substances:<br />
• elim<strong>in</strong>ation:<br />
- elim<strong>in</strong>ate the use of the hazardous substance<br />
- assess if the task is essential, <strong>to</strong> establish if it<br />
can be elim<strong>in</strong>ated, particularly if workers have<br />
experienced adverse health effects from us<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
substance <strong>in</strong> the past<br />
• substitution/isolation/redesign:<br />
- use the substance <strong>in</strong> a different way that<br />
prevents or m<strong>in</strong>imises the risk from exposure <strong>to</strong><br />
the substance (e.g. pour<strong>in</strong>g a chemical from a<br />
conta<strong>in</strong>er or apply<strong>in</strong>g it as a jet rather than us<strong>in</strong>g<br />
as a f<strong>in</strong>e aerosol if the chemical could cause an<br />
eye <strong>in</strong>jury)<br />
- substitute a hazardous chemical with a less<br />
hazardous one, which is better suited for domestic<br />
use<br />
- provide workers with a limited range of clean<strong>in</strong>g<br />
chemicals that are low or non-hazardous<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g:<br />
o diluted chemicals<br />
o detergent and warm water for rout<strong>in</strong>e<br />
environmental clean<strong>in</strong>g of surfaces <strong>in</strong><br />
the domestic situation rather than us<strong>in</strong>g<br />
hazardous substances such as bleaches (e.g.<br />
use appropriate cleaners for clean<strong>in</strong>g up body<br />
fluids)<br />
- secure the substance <strong>in</strong> the orig<strong>in</strong>al conta<strong>in</strong>er and<br />
s<strong>to</strong>re <strong>in</strong> a location accord<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>structions<br />
- use an exhaust fan or open w<strong>in</strong>dows for adequate<br />
ventilation while <strong>work<strong>in</strong>g</strong> with the substance<br />
• personal protective equipment appropriate for the<br />
task should be provided (e.g. gloves and safety<br />
glasses)<br />
• adm<strong>in</strong>istration:<br />

- the employer should provide:<br />
o tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g on how <strong>to</strong> use a particular substance<br />
o <strong>in</strong>formation on how <strong>to</strong> s<strong>to</strong>re chemicals and<br />
medication out of the reach of children<br />
o tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for the selection, use and<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>tenance of PPE.<br />
How <strong>to</strong> tell if the controls are <strong>work<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />
• consult with staff and follow-up on issues raised<br />
• conduct regular audits <strong>to</strong> ensure controls are effective<br />
and are be<strong>in</strong>g used by staff.<br />
