Driv<strong>in</strong>g risks for workers<br />

Driv<strong>in</strong>g mo<strong>to</strong>r vehicles is a significant part of a worker’s<br />

day when provid<strong>in</strong>g services <strong>in</strong> peoples’ <strong>homes</strong>, and may<br />

be exposed <strong>to</strong> the follow<strong>in</strong>g risks:<br />

• driv<strong>in</strong>g when tired<br />

• poorly ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed vehicles (e.g. tyres, brakes, lights)<br />

• noise from driv<strong>in</strong>g long distances with w<strong>in</strong>dows down<br />

• unrestra<strong>in</strong>ed equipment <strong>in</strong> the vehicle<br />

• driv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> poor conditions.<br />

What are the controls?<br />

Possible controls that should be considered <strong>to</strong> reduce<br />

mo<strong>to</strong>r accidents <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />

• reduc<strong>in</strong>g driv<strong>in</strong>g times by:<br />

- group<strong>in</strong>g clients by locality where possible<br />

- check<strong>in</strong>g that the required equipment or<br />

consumables are packed before leav<strong>in</strong>g the base<br />

• secur<strong>in</strong>g all equipment for transport (e.g. <strong>in</strong> the car<br />

boot or beh<strong>in</strong>d a cargo barrier)<br />

• develop<strong>in</strong>g a safe driv<strong>in</strong>g policy for the organisation,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g road rules such as wear<strong>in</strong>g seat belts and<br />

mobile phone use<br />

• verify<strong>in</strong>g drivers are appropriately licensed and <strong>in</strong>clude<br />

this requirement <strong>in</strong> position descriptions<br />

• purchas<strong>in</strong>g vehicles with safety accessories/extras<br />

(e.g. air bags, bull bars, ABS brakes, air condition<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

t<strong>in</strong>ted w<strong>in</strong>dows)<br />

• ensur<strong>in</strong>g staff transport<strong>in</strong>g dangerous, awkward<br />

goods, or people with wheelchairs, are appropriately<br />

tra<strong>in</strong>ed for the task<br />

• encourag<strong>in</strong>g workers not <strong>to</strong> drive if the road conditions<br />

are poor, unclear or unpredictable<br />

• ensur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation on road rules and defensive<br />

driv<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g is made available <strong>to</strong> all workers<br />

• ensur<strong>in</strong>g drivers report defective vehicles and all<br />

<strong>in</strong>cidents result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>juries or damage<br />

• ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g a system of:<br />

- record<strong>in</strong>g and moni<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>cidents<br />

- moni<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g each driver and vehicle (e.g. accident<br />

and service records)<br />

• ensur<strong>in</strong>g daily mo<strong>to</strong>r vehicle checks are carried out by<br />

the driver (e.g. operational lights, condition of tyres)<br />

• ensur<strong>in</strong>g an accredited mechanic carries out regular<br />

vehicle ma<strong>in</strong>tenance <strong>in</strong> accordance with vehicle<br />

requirements<br />

• ensur<strong>in</strong>g vehicles are appropriately <strong>in</strong>sured.<br />

How <strong>to</strong> tell if the controls are <strong>work<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />

• consult with staff and follow-up on issues raised<br />

• conduct regular audits <strong>to</strong> ensure controls are effective<br />

and be<strong>in</strong>g used by staff.<br />
