Gemmology lab announces new
jewellery design competition
The International Gemological Institute’s 2020 JEWEL Jewelry Design Contest is now open.
The International Gemological
Institute (IGI) has launched a new
jewellery competition, the 2020
JEWEL Jewelry Design Contest, with
cash and gemmology scholarships
among the prizes to be won.
Amateur and professional jewellers,
artists, teachers, and students are
invited to submit design concepts
for consideration in four categories:
diamond, colour gemstone, gold,
and creative material.
The overall theme of the
competition ‘Collision and fusion’,
exploring duality, growth, and unity,
and the combination of materials as
well as cultural influences.
Roland Lorie, CEO IGI, explained,
“In our industry’s history, every
collision and fusion of civilizations
made way for new classical eras.
“With the new IGI JEWEL Jewelry
Design Contest, we hope to
empower participants to approach
design with a global perspective
and make room for the next period
of influential jewellery.”
The judging panel includes
jewellers Stephen Webster, Philip
Sajet and Alexandre Corrot,
diamantaire David Gotlib, and Wan
Jin Yuan, chairwoman of the Fosun
Art Center.
The competition has an unusual
format, with entrants invited to
submit concepts rather than
finished jewellery pieces.
Approximately 30 designs will be
selected as finalists by 1 September.
They will then be manufactured and
promoted online as well as at
a number of industry events.
A statement from IGI said, “Finalist
designs will receive exposure on
a physical tour of various trade
events and expositions, along with
online promotion through a series
of professional channels and the
change to receive support from
jewelry brands towards further
development.”
“With the new IGI JEWEL
Jewelry Design Contest,
we hope to empower
participants to approach
design with a global
perspective and make
room for the next period
of influential jewellery”
– Roland Lorie, IGI
Following the promotional period,
a final grand champion and two
silver medallists will be selected.
Additionally, four ‘Outstanding
Design’ prizes – one for each
category – will be awarded.
Participation is free of charge and
entries will be assessed on creativity,
use of materials, budget, feasibility of
production and wearability.
The winners are scheduled to
be announced at a ceremony on
25 November, pending safety
clearance.
