5 | P a g ePresident’s MessageMichael GordonOver the last several months, I’ve been taking a peek at the character of thecongregation. What I’ve learned is that you care a great deal about your relationshipwith G-d, about the well being of your family, about the condition of the congregation,about your Jewish being and experience, and the sustainability of Temple Adas Shalom.As we move forward through this Coronavirus journey into a post-pandemic world, webelieve that this is a time for reimagining the future in a way that will make the futurebetter than the past. To this end, the board, in partnership with the Rabbi, is looking totransform membership function. The plan is to steer from a focus on the headcount andannual fund drives to a focus on the quality and quantity of engagement opportunitiesfor all segments of our congregation. We now have our first student board member,Kalina Abrams, who will remind us of the need to help our youth continue theirreligious journey into adulthood. Adult education is off to a great start in preparingmany high-quality opportunities for continuing education. You just received a surveythat will help us sharpen our focus. The newly reinvigorated Finance Committee has aprimary objective of providing for the financial sustainability of Temple. As we work toachieve this, we are very conscious of the fact that a number of our congregants arefaced with serious financial difficulties. Those of us who have been more fortunate willbe called upon to step up so we can lessen the burden on those who are struggling. OurFund Raising Committee is exploring many new activities that will both generaterevenue and engage the congregation. In all areas, we are seeking to build newpartnerships with the local community and local businesses.The Religious Practices Committee has provided us with a solid foundationcornerstone for all of our activities. We have “Zoomed” into the streaming delivery ofShabbat Services, B’nai Mitzvah, and shiva minyanim. We can visualize a future wherewe will deliver a hybrid model of in-person and streaming services. We’ve seenparticipation from congregants who couldn’t otherwise attend Shabbat Services. We’relooking for ways to provide a virtual Oneg experience. At the same time, our ReligiousSchool is focused on continuing to provide meaningful education in the world of Zoom.Many of you have asked about where we stand with opening the building. We have aSafe Opening Committee co-chaired by Mark Wolkow of the RPC and Barry Bakerrepresenting the medical and data-driven perspectives. It has been decided that theHigh Holiday Services will be streamed and is a common approach among ReformCongregations across the county. Likewise, following the lead of the Harford CountyPublic Schools, the first semester of religious school will be conducted online.As we find a deeper purpose in our Jewish experience, we will strive to make the newyear a positive experience for all members of our congregation. This experience is asacred partnership that we all share in having. I can promise you that we will stayfocused on making tomorrow the best it can be. We will use this pandemic as a catalystfor looking at our world in a new way.L’shalom
