How to Protect Yourself & Others

KNOW HOW IT

SPREADS

There is currently no vaccine to prevent

coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

The best way to prevent illness is to

avoid being exposed to this virus.

The virus is thought to spread mainly

from person-to-person.

• Between people who are in close

contact with one another (within

about 6 feet).

• Through respiratory droplets

produced when an infected person

coughs, sneezes or talks.

• These droplets can land in the

mouths or noses of people who are

nearby or possibly be inhaled into

the lungs.

• Some recent studies have

suggested that COVID-19 may

be spread by people who are not

showing symptoms.

WASH YOUR

HANDS OFTEN

• Wash your hands often with soap

and water for at least 20 seconds

especially after you have been in a

public place, or after blowing your

nose, coughing, or sneezing.

• If soap and water are not readily

available, use a hand sanitizer

that contains at least 60% alcohol.

Cover all surfaces of your hands

and rub them together until they

feel dry.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose,

and mouth with unwashed hands.

AVOID CLOSE

CONTACT

• Avoid close contact with people

who are sick

• Put distance between yourself and

other people.

• Remember that some people

without symptoms may be able

to spread virus.

• Keeping distance from others is

especially important for people

who are at higher risk of getting

very sick.

Oregon

Oregon is a state in the Pacific Northwest region on the

West Coast of the United States. The Columbia River

delineates much of Oregon’s northern boundary with

Washington, while the Snake River delineates much of

its eastern boundary with Idaho. The 42° north parallel

delineates the southern boundary with California and

Nevada.

Oregon has been home to many Indigenous nations for

thousands of years. The first European traders, explorers,

and settlers began exploring what is now Oregon’s

Pacific coast in the early-mid 1500s. As early as 1565,

the Spanish began sending vessels northeast from the

Philippines, riding the Kuroshio Current in a sweeping

circular route across the northern part of the Pacific.

In 1592, Juan de Fuca undertook detailed mapping

and studies of ocean currents in the Pacific Northwest,

including the Oregon coast as well as the strait now

bearing his name. Spanish ships – 250 in as many

years – would typically not land before reaching Cape

Mendocino in California, but some landed or wrecked

in what is now Oregon. Nehalem tales recount strangers

and the discovery of items like chunks of beeswax

and a lidded silver vase, likely connected to the 1707

wreck of the San Francisco Xavier.

In 1843, an autonomous government was formed in the

Oregon Country, and the Oregon Territory was created

in 1848. Oregon became the 33rd state of the U.S. on

February 14, 1859. Today, with 4 million people over

98,000 square miles (250,000 km2), Oregon is the ninth

largest and 27th most populous U.S. state. The capital,

Salem, is the second-most populous city in Oregon,

with 169,798 residents. Portland, with 647,805, ranks

as the 26th among U.S. cities. The Portland metropolitan

area, which also includes the city of Vancouver,

Washington, to the north, ranks the 25th largest metro

area in the nation, with a population of 2,453,168.

Oregon is one of the most geographically diverse states

in the U.S., marked by volcanoes, abundant bodies of

water, dense evergreen and mixed forests, as well as

high deserts and semi-arid shrublands. At 11,249 feet

(3,429 m), Mount Hood, a stratovolcano, is the state’s

highest point. Oregon’s only national park, Crater Lake

National Park, comprises the caldera surrounding Crater

Lake, the deepest lake in the United States. The

state is also home to the single largest organism in the

world, Armillaria ostoyae, a fungus that runs beneath

2,200 acres (8.9 km2) of the Malheur National Forest.

Because of its diverse landscapes and waterways, Oregon’s

economy is largely powered by various forms of

agriculture, fishing, and hydroelectric power. Oregon is

also the top timber producer of the contiguous United

States, and the timber industry dominated the state’s

economy in the 20th century. Technology is another

one of Oregon’s major economic forces, beginning in

the 1970s with the establishment of the Silicon Forest

and the expansion of Tektronix and Intel. Sportswear

company Nike, Inc., headquartered in Beaverton, is the

state’s largest public corporation with an annual revenue

of $30.6 billion.

Etymology

The earliest evidence of the name Oregon

has Spanish origins. The term “orejón”

(meaning “big ear”) comes from the

historical chronicle Relación de la Alta y

Baja California (1598)written by the new

Spaniard Rodrigo Montezuma and made

reference to the Columbia River when

the Spanish explorers penetrated into the

actual North American territory that became

part of the Viceroyalty of New Spain. This

chronicle is the first topographical and

linguistic source with respect to the place

name Oregon. There are also two other

sources with Spanish origins, such as the

word oregano, referring to a plant which

grows in the southern part of the region.

It is possible that the American territory

was named by the Spaniards, as there is

a stream in Spain called the “Arroyo del

Oregón” (which is located in the province

of Ciudad Real); it is also possible that the

“j” in the Spanish phrase “El Orejón” was

later corrupted into a “g”, and in context

might refer to the ‘earful’ of the massive

Columbia River at its mouth.

Another early use of the name, spelled

Ouragon, was by Major Robert Rogers in

a 1765 petition to the Kingdom of Great

Britain. The term referred to the thenmythical

River of the West (the Columbia

River). By 1778, the spelling had shifted to

Oregon. Rogers wrote:

... from the Great Lakes towards the

Head of the Mississippi, and from thence

to the River called by the Indians Ouragon

...

One theory is that the name comes from

the French word ouragan (“windstorm”

or “hurricane”), which was applied to

the River of the West based on Native

American tales of powerful Chinook winds

on the lower Columbia River, or perhaps

from firsthand French experience with the

Chinook winds of the Great Plains. At the

time, the River of the West was thought to

rise in western Minnesota and flow west

through the Great Plains.

Crater Lake

National Park

Crater Lake National Park is an American

national park located in southern Oregon.

Established in 1902, Crater Lake is the fiftholdest

national park in the United States and

the only national park in Oregon. The park

encompasses the caldera of Crater Lake,

a remnant of a destroyed volcano, Mount

Mazama, and the surrounding hills and forests.

The lake is 1,949 feet (594 m) deep at its

deepest point, which makes it the deepest

lake in the United States, the second-deepest

in North America and the ninth-deepest

in the world. Crater Lake is often referred to

as the seventh-deepest lake in the world,

but this former listing excludes the approximately

3,000-foot (910 m) depth of subglacial

Lake Vostok in Antarctica, which resides

under nearly 13,000 feet (4,000 m) of ice,

and the recent report of a 2,740-foot (840

m) maximum depth for Lake O’Higgins/San

Martin, located on the border of Chile and

Argentina. However, when comparing its average

depth of 1,148 feet (350 m) to the average

depth of other deep lakes, Crater Lake

becomes the deepest in the Western Hemisphere

and the third-deepest in the world.

The impressive average depth of this volcanic

lake is due to the nearly symmetrical

4,000-foot-deep (1,200 m) caldera formed

7,700 years ago during the violent climactic

eruptions and subsequent collapse of Mount

Mazama and the relatively moist climate that

is typical of the crest of the Cascade Range.

The caldera rim ranges in elevation from

7,000 to 8,000 feet (2,100 to 2,400 m). The

United States Geological Survey benchmarked

elevation of the lake surface is 6,178

feet (1,883 m). The national park encompasses

183,224 acres (286.3 sq mi; 741.5

km2). Crater Lake has no streams flowing

into or out of it. All water that enters the lake

is eventually lost from evaporation or subsurface

seepage. The lake’s water commonly

has a striking blue hue, and the lake is refilled

entirely from direct precipitation in the

form of snow and rain.

Multnomah Falls

Multnomah Falls is a waterfall located on

Multnomah Creek in the Columbia River

Gorge, east of Troutdale, between Corbett

and Dodson, Oregon, United States. The

waterfall is accessible from the Historic

Columbia River Highway and Interstate

84. Spanning two tiers on basalt cliffs, it is

the tallest waterfall in the state of Oregon

at 620 ft (189 m) in height.

The land surrounding the falls was developed

by Simon Benson in the earlytwentieth

century, with a pathway, viewing

bridge, and adjacent lodge being

constructed in 1925. The Multnomah Falls

Lodge and the surrounding footpaths at

the falls were added to the National Register

of Historic Places in 1981. Contemporarily,

the state of Oregon maintains a

switchback trail that ascends to a talus

slope 100 feet (30 m) above the falls, and

descends to an observation deck that

overlooks the falls’ edge. The falls attract

over two million visitors each year, making

it the most-visited natural recreation site in

the U.S. Pacific Northwest.

The falls drops in two major steps, split

into an upper falls of 542 feet (165 m) and

a lower falls of 69 feet (21 m), with a gradual

9 foot (3 m) drop in elevation between

the two, so the total height of the waterfall

is conventionally given as 620 feet (189

m). The two drops are due to a zone of

more easily eroded basalt at the base of

the upper falls.

Multnomah Falls is the tallest waterfall

in the state of Oregon. It is credited

by a sign at the site of the falls, and by

the United States Forest Service, as the

second tallest year-round waterfall in the

United States. However, there has been

some skepticism surrounding this distinction,

as Multnomah Falls is listed as the

156th tallest waterfall in the United States

by the World Waterfall Database (this site

does not distinguish between seasonal

and year-round waterfalls). The World

Waterfall Database disputes claims that

Multnomah Falls is the fourth-tallest waterfall

in the United States, which has been

claimed in such sources as the Encyclopedia

of World Geography.

Underground springs from Larch Mountain

are the year-round source of water

for the waterfall, augmented by spring

runoff from the mountain’s snowpack and

rainwater during the other seasons. This

spring is the source of Multnomah Creek.

Mount Hood

Mount Hood is a potentially active stratovolcano

in the Cascade Volcanic Arc. It was

formed by a subduction zone on the Pacific

coast and rests in the Pacific Northwest region

of the United States. It is located about

50 miles (80 km) east-southeast of Portland,

on the border between Clackamas and

Hood River counties. In addition to being

Oregon’s highest mountain, it is one of the

loftiest mountains in the nation based on

its prominence, and it offers the only yearround

lift-served skiing in North America.

The height assigned to Mount Hood’s

snow-covered peak has varied over its history.

Modern sources point to three different

heights: 11,249 feet (3,429 m), a 1991

adjustment of a 1986 measurement by

the U.S. National Geodetic Survey (NGS),

11,240 feet (3,426 m) based on a 1993 scientific

expedition, and 11,239 feet (3,425.6

m) of slightly older origin. The peak is home

to 12 named glaciers and snowfields. It is

the highest point in Oregon and the fourth

highest in the Cascade Range. Mount Hood

is considered the Oregon volcano most likely

to erupt, though based on its history, an

explosive eruption is unlikely. Still, the odds

of an eruption in the next 30 years are estimated

at between 3 and 7%, so the U.S.

Geological Survey (USGS) characterizes it

as “potentially active”, but the mountain is

informally considered dormant.

Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area

The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area is located on the Oregon Coast, stretching

approximately 40 miles (64 km) north of the Coos River in North Bend to the

Siuslaw River in Florence, and adjoining Honeyman State Park on the west. It is part

of Siuslaw National Forest and is administered by the United States Forest Service.

The Oregon Dunes are a unique area of windswept sand. They are the largest expanse

of coastal sand dunes in North America and one of the largest expanses of

temperate coastal sand dunes in the world, with some dunes reaching 500 feet (150

m) above sea level. They are the product of millions of years of erosion by wind and

rain on the Oregon Coast. The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area provides numerous

recreational activities, including off-highway vehicle (OHV) use, hiking, photography,

fishing, canoeing, horseback riding, and camping. The Carter Dunes Trail

and Oregon Dunes Day Use provide forest access for the disabled.

Frank Herbert’s science-fiction novel Dune was inspired (in part) by the author’s research

and fascination with the area.

History

The Oregon Dunes are over 100,000 years old and stretch approximately 40 miles

(64 km). The youngest dunes, which are the closest to the ocean, began forming

about 7,000 years ago. Studies of individual sand grains show that these sands were

carried down from the mountains by the Umpqua, Siuslaw, and other smaller rivers.

In 1963, Congressman Robert B. Duncan introduced a

bill to establish a national seashore at the Oregon Dunes;

it unanimously passed the Senate Interior Committee.

Senator Wayne Morse opposed provisions of the bill

that increased environmental protections by restricting

property uses In 1972 Congress set aside 32,186 acres

(13,025 ha) of the total dune area as the Oregon Dunes

National Recreation Area. The actual dunes are managed

by the U.S. Forest Service, while the remaining area

is private or county land.

Geology

The sand dunes were formed by wind and water over

time. The dune formation is mainly dependent on the

wind. In the summer the wind blows from the north and

northwest at 12–16 miles per hour (19–26 km/h). Mountain

barriers near the coast deflect the wind currents,

forming the sand into many different shapes. In the winter

the winds are much slower (except during storms when

the winds can reach up to 100 miles per hour (160 km/h)),

coming from the south and southwest. These winds move

large amounts of sand, reshaping the dunes’ structure.

Water also plays a role in dune formation. Waves and

tides dredge sand from the ocean floor and deposit it

onto the beaches, where the wind takes over.

The water currents also create marshy areas where

standing water is several feet deep. Upward pressure

causes the sand grains to become saturated and float.

This process results in quicksand. Quicksand is found in

the low, unvegetated areas between the dunes.

The barrage lakes are the largest lakes in Oregon Dunes

National Recreation Area. They were formed when

streams flowing west from the Coast Range foothills were

dammed up by the rapidly developing dunes.

Smith Rock State Park

Smith Rock State Park is an American state park located in central Oregon’s

High Desert near the communities of Redmond and Terrebonne.

The day use area of the park is open daily from dawn to dusk. The park

also has a camping area as well that accommodates tent camping only.

Its sheer cliffs of tuff and basalt are ideal for rock climbing of all difficulty

levels. Smith Rock is generally considered the birthplace of modern

American sport climbing, and is host to cutting-edge climbing routes. It is

popular for sport climbing, traditional climbing, multi-pitch climbing, and

bouldering.

Geology

The geology of Smith Rocks is volcanic. It is made up of layers of recent

basalt flows overlaying older Clarno ash and tuff formations. Approximately

30 million years ago, a large caldera was formed when overlying

rock collapsed into an underground lava chamber. This created a huge

amount of rock and ash debris that filled the caldera. That material solidified

into rock, becoming Smith Rock tuff. Rhyolite flows intruded along

faults in the Smith Rock Tuff. A half million years ago, basalt lava flows

from nearby volcanoes covered the older tuff.

More recently, the Crooked River cut its way through the layers of rock to

create today’s geographic features. Smith Rock itself is a 3,200-foot (980

m)-high ridge (above sea level) with a sheer cliff-face overlooking a bend

in the Crooked River (elev. 2600 ft), making the cliffs about 600 feet high.

History

The origin of the Smith Rock name is uncertain.

One story, published the Albany States Rights

Democrat in 1867, states that Smith Rock was

named after John Smith, who was Linn County

Sheriff and an Oregon state legislator in the 1850s

and 1860s. The newspaper article credits Smith

with “discovering” the rock. Another story claims

the rock was named after a soldier named Smith

who fell to his death from the rock in 1863 while

his unit was camped nearby.

The State of Oregon obtained the park property

between 1960 and 1975 from the City of Redmond

and Harry and Diane Kem.

Climbing

The park has many miles of developed trails for

hiking. The trails have viewpoints along the routes

that overlook the Crooked River and nearby rock

formations. The two main trails are the Summit Trail

and Misery Ridge. The park’s trail network links to

neighboring Forest Service and Bureau of Land

Management trails on adjacent public lands. The

soil and native vegetation on the steep

hillsides in the park are very sensitive

to damage, so visitors are required to

stay on established trails.

The park contains the first U.S. climb

rated 5.14 (8b+). The area is well

known for its challenging climbing

routes and attracts high level climbers.

In 1983, Alan Watts began to use sport

climbing ethics which pushed American

climbing to new levels. Shortly

after, between 1992 and 2009, about

500 new climbing routes were added.

This brought climbers from all over the

world as Smith Rock became the world

capital for sport climbing. To this day,

the park still attracts climbers from

around the globe. The winter weather

is typically cold (below freezing), but

climbers still make the journey due to

the reduced traffic on routes. Summer

months regularly reach the 100s

°F (40s °C). Some climbing routes are

closed periodically for the protection

of nesting birds of prey.

Smith Rock State Park has more than

1,800 rock climbing routes as of 2010.

The park is broken up into walls and

have names commonly used by the

climbing community.

Christian Brothers

The Christian Brothers area is a large

group of rock spires in between Asterisk

Pass and The Dihedrals. The walls

that make up the Christian Brothers

area are the Prophet Wall, The Beard,

Testament Slab and the Combination

Blocks. There are several routes in

this area that are noteworthy such as

Wartley’s Revenge, Revelations with

its high first bolt off the ground, Double

Trouble, BBQ the Pope, Heresy, Rude

Boys, and Scarface and Chemical Ali.

The Dihedrals

The Dihedrals are located between the

Four Horseman and Asterisk Pass just

pass the Morning Glory Wall. It is one

of the more popular areas to climb in

the park with easy classics like Cinnamon

Slab, Bunny Face. It has some

more moderate climbs of high quality

such as Moonshine Dihedral and Karate

Crack as well some of the more

difficult and famous climbs such as

Heinous Cling, Chain Reaction and To

Bolt or Not to Be.

The Upper and Lower Gorge

The Gorge contains more climbs that

are Traditional Routes rather than Sport

Routes. Climbers also need to be fairly

stout climbers as most routes start in

the low 5.12’s. The rock is mainly basalt,

fairly different from the welded tuff

you find in most of the other climbing

areas in Smith Rock State Park. The

lower gorge is a location to get away

from the heat of the late spring, summer

and early fall.

The Marsupials

The Marsupials are the farthest climbing

area from the main entrance of

the park. To get there, go across the

bridge and turn right on Wolf Tree

Trail. Follow this around the canyon

following the Crooked River and turn

up Burma Road. The beginning of the

Marsupials starts just off Burma Road.

The three main areas in the Marsupials

are Koala Rock, The Wombat and

Brogan Spire.[28]

Famed climber Beth Rodden made the

first female ascent of The Optimist located

on the “Koala Rock” side of the

Marsupials.

and is one of two performing arts venues owned

by the City. Cuthbert Amphitheater, located in

Eugene’s Alton Baker Park, is also owned by the

City and is operated by Kesey Enterprises.

Twenty-seven architectural firms competed for

the opportunity to design the Center, but in the

end, the Eugene City Council awarded the contract

to the New York firm of Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer

Associates. The firm had previously designed

the $7.5-million, 2,700-seat Minneapolis Orchestra

Hall and the $13-million Boettcher Concert

Hall at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts.

Jordan Schnitzer

Museum of Art

Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (JSMA) is an art

museum located on the campus of the University

of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon. The original building

was designed by Ellis F. Lawrence as part of

his “main university quadrangle,” now known as

the Memorial Quadrangle. Its first Director, Asian

art collector, and female museum specialist Gertrude

Bass Warner also influenced the buildings

design, particularly its innovative climate control

measures.

The only academic museum in Oregon accredited

by the American Alliance of Museums, the

JSMA hosts exhibitions and houses collections

of historic and contemporary art. It manages research

and educational programs and publishes

resources in support the university’s academic

mission, including outreach initiatives to serve

the diverse interests of off-campus communities.

The JSMA’s standing galleries present from

its holdings of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and

American art. Special exhibition galleries display

curated artwork both from these permanent collections

and outside collections, representing

cultures across the globe, past and present. It

aims to provide an atmosphere of discovery –

the JSMA mission statement includes this guiding

principle: “We recognize our visitors’ different

learning styles and the needs of a multigenerational

and diverse audience”.

Maude Kerns Art Center

Maude Irvine Kerns (August 1, 1876 – August

19, 1965) was an American artist and art educator,

known for her avant-garde paintings. Her

works were exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum,

National Gallery of Art, and the Salon des

Réalités Nouvelles, and earned Kerns considerable

notoriety among the abstract art movement

in New York. She later taught art at the

University of Oregon as well as at high schools

in Corvallis and Seattle, Washington before her

Shelton McMurphey

Johnson House

The Shelton McMurphey Johnson House, or Castle

on the Hill, is a Victorian-era residence that is

listed on the National Register of Historical Places.

It is named for the three families who called

it home over the years. The house is now open

for public tours and pre-arranged private events.

The Queen Anne-styled house, built in 1888 for T.

W. Shelton, was designed by Salem, Oregon architect

Walter D. Pugh. It has undergone several

modifications, including an enlargement in the

1910s for Robert McMurphey, and a remodel by

Curtis and Eva Johnson in 1951 which restored

its original turret. The house suffered two major

fires, one during its initial construction, and a second

one in 1950 during the Johnson remodel.

The house was deeded to Lane County by Eva

Johnson in 1976. It is now owned by the City of

Eugene and kept open to the public by Shelton

McMurphey Johnson Associates, a nonprofit

group.
