Application Process and Timeline<br />

Application deadlines vary widely by graduate program and field, with most deadlines for a fall<br />

matriculation occurring between December and March. Be aware that schools with rolling admissions<br />

encourage and act upon early application submissions.<br />

Spring/Summer<br />

• Research areas of interest, institutions,<br />

and programs.<br />

• Register and prepare for appropriate graduate<br />

admission tests. Inquire about fee waivers.<br />

• Investigate national scholarships<br />

and fellowships.<br />

• Many professional programs require you to<br />

register for a national data assembly service<br />

and begin your application now.<br />

November/December<br />

• Revise your application essays.<br />

• Touch base with your letter of<br />

recommendation writers.<br />

• Complete applications as appropriate.<br />

Be sure they are accurate and free of errors.<br />

January/February<br />

September<br />

• Finalize your list of target schools, noting<br />

their application procedures.<br />

• Take required graduate admission tests,<br />

confirming your schools will receive the scores.<br />

• Draft your application essays.<br />

• Ask professors and advisors for letters<br />

of recommendation. (See page 48.)<br />

October<br />

• Request official transcripts from all<br />

institutions in which you were enrolled.<br />

• Gather feedback on your application<br />

essays from faculty, the Writing Center,<br />

and CP&R.<br />

• Compute the total application fees needed.<br />

Inquire about fee waivers.<br />

• Complete the Free Application for Federal<br />

Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.ed.gov.<br />

Submission dates depend on state and institution.<br />

• Check with all institutions before the<br />

deadline to make sure your file is complete.<br />

Spring<br />

• Visit institutions that accept you.<br />

• Send deposit to institution of choice.<br />

• Notify other colleges and universities of<br />

your choice so that they may admit students<br />

on their waiting list.<br />

• Send thank-you notes to people who wrote<br />

your recommendation letters.<br />

• Tell CP&R about your success!<br />
