HOW YOU MADE A

BLOOMIN’

THE LHCH CHARITY
ROSE IS HERE
PLUS
Home Time and
CHRISTMAS IS
COMING!
It was difficult to know how to start this introduction.
The global Covid-19 pandemic has dominated so much
of our lives over the last few months with so many
people lost and a complete change to our way of life.
We can never thank all our key workers enough. You are all absolute
heroes and your courage, good humour and compassion should never
been forgotten.
We also owe a huge debt of gratitude to everyone who has supported
LHCH Charity during the past months. Your donations have really made a
difference to how we have been able to assist our patients and staff.
So THANK YOU from everyone here at LHCH.
Enjoy your Autumn and Winter and we look forward to meeting with you
again in Spring when hopefully life will have returned to some sense of
normality.
Best wishes,
The Charity Office Team

Our new
website
It has been over 4 years since our
first website was launched and
although it has served us well –
we felt that it was time for a more
modern and interactive approach.
So we have worked very hard
in producing what we feel is a
much cleaner, easier to use and to
navigate website.
New features include our lovely
new Butterfly Tribute Funds
(see more about that on Page 17),
an easier shopping experience and
our new events pages.
We would really love to hear your
thoughts and ideas about our new
look so please
do take a
minute to
visit and let us
know what
you think.

Our Supporters
Extraordinaire
Just like NHS Charities Together had Captain Tom – LHCH
Charity had our own band of extraordinary supporters
during the Covid-19 Crisis. We were absolutely amazed at
the help you have given us over the past few months – to
all who responded whether you undertook a marathon or
wrote a cheque – from everyone here at LHCH thank you
from the bottom of our hearts.
Handmade with Love
11 year old Lois Higgins developed
the idea of making her own multicoloured
wristbands to support
local NHS Charities.
After many hours of work and over
500 wristbands produced she has
raised the magnificent amount of
£1,200 for both LHCH Charity and
Alder Hey. She also made some for
elderly neighbours with a special
note urging them to “stay safe”.
We’re sure her Mum and
Dad must be very proud
of such a caring and kind
young lady!
Jessica’s Birthday
Challenge
Jessica Williams decided that her
22nd Birthday would be a very
special one this year, no cake or
celebrations for her – she was
going to cycle 22 miles to raise
funds to thank LHCH for treating
her dad during the pandemic.
Jessica says: “the whole family were
overwhelmed with the care that
he received during his stay and we
were so touched by the support
shown to the whole family at what
was such a traumatic time for us all.”
In total Jessica raised £532
for LHCH Charity and we
owe her a huge debt of
gratitude for all her efforts.
Jessica’s Marathon Effort
Not to be outdone by Lois, 5 year
old Jessica O’Connor decided to run
a marathon! Jessica said:
“I’ve already run a mile so I can do
this 26 and half times more to help
the poorly people where Mummy
works.”
And she did - raising over
£1,151 for LHCH Charity.
Another young lady to be
very proud of!
The Wonderful Wigfields
After we cared for her Dad,
daughter Charlotte had originally
planned to run the Chester Half
Marathon to say thank
you. Of course, like
many events it was
cancelled but she
wasn’t going to let that
stop her. Instead the
whole family got together
to undertake their own
challenges culiminating
in Charlotte completing
the virtual Chester Half
Marathon in July.
In total the
“wonderful
Wigfields” have
raised £723 so
far and are still going
strong.
And how they
made a
difference.
The fantastic support you have read about on previous
pages and the countless others that space doesn’t allow
us to tell you about, really has made a huge difference to
our patients, their families and our dedicated staff during
the pandemic.
To everyone who has supported us during these difficult
and unpredictable times we really do owe you a huge
thank you from all of us here at LHCH.
Thanks to a very generous grant
of £8,000 from the Morrison’s
Foundation we were able to provide
emergency patients with a “wash bag”
of toiletries as their families could not
visit. We were also able to provide
tablets so that patients could stay in
touch with their families and not feel
so isolated.
With your support we could help
our hard pressed staff too with
the installation of “wobble” rooms,
outdoor seating and gazebos for
those who needed a quiet moment
away from the ward.
Grants from NHS Charities Together
have helped us to establish a new
tele-medicine service for patients most
at risk of infection. This allows them
to have consultations via a webcam
which is much safer for them.
The grant also enabled us to
introduce tele-conferencing facilities
in our research area - allowing our
researchers to work more close more
closely with others in searching for a
vaccine.

In April 2019 Marks and Spencer’s in Church Street, Liverpool
contacted the Charity Office to say that we had been chosen as
their Charity of the Year. Obviously we were delighted and thrilled
to be chosen and couldn’t wait to work with such an enthusiastic
and supportive team.
Over the months the staff worked tirelessly, often supported by our
great friends at Sing Me Merseyside, and organised collections, fun
walks, cake sales and all manner of events and despite the advent of
Coronavirus and the closing of the store for 3 months still managed
to raise an astonishing £10,000 for LHCH Charity.
Christmas

easier to bear. This is why we have introduced, as part of our new
website, the opportunity to create your own Butterfly Tribute Page so
that you have a place to visit, share memories, photographs, videos and
music. You can even mark special anniversaries and birthdays by lighting a
virtual candle.

want it to and it’s so easy to do – just visit our website at

Heartfelt
Thanks
Anyone would feel very special
having a rose named after
them so you can imagine how
thrilled we were when Keith
Jones, of international rose
specialists C & K Jones got
in touch to say that he had
created one especially
for LHCH Charity!
Keith was treated at LHCH in January and was so impressed with the care
he received he decided he wanted to say thank you in this most unique way
and he created the “Heartfelt Thanks” rose especially to help us raise funds.
This beautiful rose is a lightly scented pink Floribunda blooming from June to
November. Foliage is semi glossy and has shown excellent disease resistance.
Height and spread are approximately 100cm (3ft) x 45-60cm (11/2-2ft).
For every order placed LHCH Charity will receive a £5 donation. We’ve
already ordered ours and can’t wait for next summer to see them coming
into flower!
Thanks Keith and all we can say is – what a blooming great
idea!!!
To get your very own Heartfelt Rose all you need to do
is visit the website to order your very own (https://jonestherose.co.uk/charity-roses/556-heartfelt-thanks)
or
give them a call on 01829 740663.
