Hello and welcome to the Spring/Summer 2020

edition of Spotlight the newsletter for the

supporters of Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital.

It’s always busy in the run up to Christmas and this year Santa brought us

a lovely surprise present when one of our supporters gifted the charity a

beautiful Bentley car to auction – see page 3 for more details.

We are thrilled to say that your support really has made a difference in

helping us drive out delirium from our Intensive Care Unit (see pages

4 and 5). You can also find out how you can continue to help with our

latest appeal for a 3D transoesophageal echocardiogram which will benefit

thousands of patients undergoing heart and lung surgery.

Of course everything we do depends on you and we can’t thank you

enough for all the help and support you give us. We hope you all have a

lovely Spring and Summer and look forward to catching up in the Autumn.

Best wishes,

The Charity Office Team

Amazing

Bentley

Donation

It was a quiet Sunday afternoon when the email arrived

containing the wonderful news of how one grateful

patient wanted to make a special gift to say thank you.

You can only imagine how thrilled we were when we discovered that it was

his much-loved and immaculately presented vintage Bentley!

Several weeks later the car arrived at Liverpool Heart and Chest on the

first stage of its journey to specialist car auctioneers Coys in London where

it was presented for auction on 4th December 2019. Bidding was very

brisk indeed and the result was this beautiful car and its very generous

owner raised an amazing £14,000 for LHCH Charity. Even better was the

news that Coys had very kindly agreed to waive all of the auction fees so

the whole amount was presented to the charity.

@LHCHCharity @TheLHCHCharity @lhchcharity We can’t thank the owner (who prefers to remain anonymous) enough

for this incredible gesture which will make such a difference to our

Charity Registration Number 1052813

patients and their families.

How you

helped us to…

Drive out delirium

In previous editions we have talked about

our need to Drive out Delirium and you, as

always, responded magnificently.

End Disassociation

Thanks to your help we have now been able to provide Sky Tiles for

each of the six intensive care rooms which currently have no access to

natural light.

Jacqui Stratton, our Intensive Care Matron says: “We really are thrilled with

the generosity of LHCH Charity supporters and especially the Trustees of

the Clive and Sylvia Richards Charity. Without their help we wouldn’t have

been able to do any of this work which really will make such a difference to

our on-going drive to reduce delirium for our patients.”

End Isolation

Because of your generosity we have been able to update and

upgrade our facilities for family members who wish to be near their

loved ones.

Access to outdoors

The next few weeks will see us being able to place a roof on our

Critical Care Garden allowing it to be used by our patients as they

begin their long road to recovery - whatever the British weather has

to throw at us.

We can only echo

that sentiment and

say, once again, a

BIG THANK YOU,

to everyone who

supported the

campaign.

Remembering

Ken

Lady Dodd and

the Diddyman for

Orchard Way

It’s hard to believe that it’s two

years since we lost the Squire

of Knotty Ash, Sir Ken

Dodd and he is still sadly

missed by everyone

who enjoyed his childlike

imagination and his

ability to make

us laugh until the tears

ran down our faces.

For most of his life Ken had been

our near neighbour living just around

the corner and had been a great

supporter of the hospital

and its work.

So we thought it was only right that

we marked his long association with

Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital

with a suitably fitting commemoration

and couldn’t think of anything better

than adding one of Doddy’s much

loved Diddymen to Orchard Way.

Lady Anne Dodd very kindly

agreed to this and visited

the hospital recently to

unveil the new figure.

The 2ft image of Dicky

Mint (the Diddyman who

is actually based on Ken

himself) has been placed among

the trees, animals and flowers of

Orchard Way and will be a long lasting

celebration with a man who really

helped the whole world laugh and, of

course, laughter is the best medicine!

5 Hot Tips

To Keep Your

Pet Safe This

Summer

Method

Make the dressing by blending all of the

ingredients in a food processor (or very

finely chop them), saving a few herb leaves

for the salad. You can make the dressing up

to 24 hrs before serving.

Scatter the beans and spinach over a large

platter. Arrange the tomatoes, cucumber,

mango, onion and radishes on top and gently

toss together with your hands. Top the salad

with the avocados, feta and herbs, and serve

the dressing on the side.

1. Dehydration in dogs and cats is a

real possibility during the summer so

provide plenty of water and shade

2. Never leave your pet in the car:

Do we really need to say anymore!

3. Pets with short hair or light coats can

get sunburnt so apply pet sunscreen

4. Exercise in the early morning and late

evening - never in the middle of the day.

5. Keep your pet off hot surfaces like

cement and asphalt – it can burn paws

and lead to overheating.

You have to be in it

to win it!!

Since we launched the LHCH Charity Lottery we have

raised thousands of pounds towards supporting

our fantastic staff in the work that they do each and

every day.

Hundreds of you play regularly and we have had quite a few

winners as well – although no one has yet managed to win that

jackpot of £25,000. So if you aren’t taking part yet why not join in –

it only costs £1 to play each week and you never know you could

be the one to take home that fantastic jackpot!

To find out more about how to play why not go online at

www.lhchcharity.org.uk where you can sign up online or give us a

call on 0151 600 1409 and we would be happy to send out more

information.

What you did

to support

LHCH Charity

in 2019

I can’t believe that I managed

to win £1,000 and support

LHCH Charity at the same

time!

Mr W of Wales

Don’t forget

– you have

to be in it to

win it!!!

And there are lots, lots more – see our website for a full list

of prizes and don’t forget you have to be in it to win it!!

You ran...

From Dashing Santas to running through

the Jordan Desert – you certainly had your

running shoes on during 2019!

James Henderson ran an

astonishing 4 marathons and the

Hell Up North half marathon to

raise funds in memory of his dad,

David. The result of all that hard

work was an amazing £852 raised

for LHCH Charity

On a bitterly cold Sunday

morning in December Caroline

Douglas and a group of her

friends braved the slippy Liverpool

streets in the world famous Santa

Dash – raising the truly magnificent

sum of £4,200 for the hospital as a

thank you following her minimally

invasive heart surgery here.

Taking to the streets donning the

infamous “Scouse” wig was Chloe

Wingle who ran to thank LHCH

for saving her grand-father’s life,

raising £435 to support our work.

Running a marathon is a challenge

at the best of times but can you

imagine running 6 marathons in

5 days across the Jordan Desert?

Well that was what George

Arnold did to raise funds after we

saved a family member’s life. George

raised nearly £3,000 following his

efforts and we believe the blisters

are now starting to heal!

Not quite as exotic a setting but

nevertheless a really tough trial was

Johnny Papaglimis’s Bolton

UK Ironman challenge which he ran

to say thank you for the treatment

his dad received whilst a patient

at LHCH. Johnny is pictured here

(right) with

his dad both

proudly wearing

their LHCH

Charity t-shirts

In fact our

supporters

almost covered

the entire North

West of England in their running

shoes whilst raising thousands of

pounds for LHCH Charity.

These include:-

Lorna Galbraith who ran

the Liverpool half marathon,

Lindsey Walker who took

part in the Liverpool Rock and

Roll Marathon, Sara Martin in

the Port Sunlight 5K, Joanne

McDonnell participated in

the Chester Marathon, Rachel

Ingram completed the

Manchester half marathon and

Sarah Chriscoli’s dad ran a

5K on Sarah’s behalf as she was

being treated for a tumour

at the hospital.

To all of you who dealt

with the training, the

chafing and the blisters

and raised so much for

LHCH all we can say is a

huge thank you and see

you again soon!

You climbed, walked

and played

Philip Thornhill and the

15-strong gang from Vodaphone

UK took to the slopes on 27th

September to say thank you for the

amazing care that Philip has received

over many years for his congenital

heart disease – raising over £1,700

for LHCH Charity.

Another intrepid climber was

Zowie Railton who conquered

the mountain just a few weeks

Mount Snowdon

welcomed many

supporters of LHCH

Charity in 2019

including –

the fantastic sum of £1,433 and

already planning their next event!

Slightly less energetic but none the

less challenging was Louise Gibbs’

pledge to walk 10,000 steps a day

every day for one month to raise

funds in memory of her much

loved mum, Marilyn. Small steps

made a big difference and Louise

raised over £1,000 for the charity

with her efforts.

You jumped

and sang

Leaping from tall buildings is

obviously quite a few people’s idea

of great fun as we discovered when

a 30 strong team including LHCH

staff and supporters took

part in an abseil from Liverpool’s

Anglican Cathedral on 24th August.

Braving the 150 foot drop from the

West Door the heroic souls raised

over £4,500 for LHCH Charity –

not only that but several of them

wanted to go up and do it again!

later on 13th October. Battling

atrocious weather Zowie and her

family members made it to the top

to celebrate the life of her mum

who had sadly passed away earlier

in the year. The whole family raised

Emily Jones decided that a

game of football was the best way

to remember her Grandad, Dave

who loved his game and was a big

supporter of Penyfford FC. So in

May the whole community came

together to celebrate Dave and

to raise the fantastic sum of £2,800

to thank LHCH for the care that

we gave.

The wonderful Sing Me Merseyside put their vocal talents to great

use at Liverpool One on Sunday 8th September. Belting out a marvellous

medley of songs the choir sang their hearts out for an hour and a half

and were so good that many shoppers just stopped and sat on the steps

listening to the whole performance!

You created

For those of us who like things a little more

sedate many of you chose to get “crafty” with

your support. From the cutest Easter egg cosies,

marvellous fabric baubles for the Christmas

Tree to knitted hats, scarves and mittens – all

have helped to make this one of our best years

for sales!

One really stand out item this year was the magnificent handmade

wooden reindeers produced by Ross Bullock which were so popular

poor Ross had to scour the local woods again and again for more supplies.

All his hard work of sawing, planing and cutting certainly paid dividends

and he raised over £1,800 for LHCH Charity. Apparently he’s now busy in

the woods again stocking up for Christmas 2020!

And companies helped too!!

Marks and Spencer

You can imagine how thrilled we

were when we learnt back in May

2019 that Marks and Spencer’s

in Church Street Liverpool had

adopted us as their Charity of

the Year. Since then the gang at

M & S have been frantically busy

organising bake sales, collections

and selling badges – raising an

amazing £10,000 to date!

Santander

Santander in Bootle, Liverpool

have long been supporters of

LHCH Charity and have organised

everything from a tuck shop to

helping us put up our Christmas

Trees. This year they have raised

£2,500 towards our work and they

are still going strong!

Bermans – Santa Dash

In October

of last year

we were

contacted

by Liverpool

solicitors,

Bermans,

who have also

partnered

with LHCH Charity as their Charity

of the Year. They kicked of the

year in frighteningly good style with

a Halloween themed cake sale,

followed by several of the hardiest

souls taking part in the Santa Dash.

We are really looking forward to

seeing what they come up with next.

HSE

One of the

more unusual

events that

a company

undertook for

us this year

was the Health

and Safety

Executive’s “Land a Band”

competition which was done in

memory of their colleague Tony

Almond. They raised an amazing

£750 on the day.

Extraordinary

work carried out

by extraordinary

people.

International

2020 is

Year of the

Nurse

May 2020 marks the 200th birthday of Florence

Nightingale and to commemorate the work of this

extraordinary woman and celebrate today’s nurses

and midwives - the World Health Organisation

has designated 2020 as the International Year of

the Nurse.

Of course, everyone knows the story of Florence

Nightingale and her famous lamp. Thanks to her and

her team of 38 nurses, fatality rates in Scutari hospital were reduced from

47% to 2% in just six months. But did you know that she also made a major

impact on the health of people living in the UK and her work on public

sanitation helped to increase life expectancy in the country by some 20 years?

Today’s nursing and midwifery professionals exemplify her spirit of dedication

and professionalism and their care makes a difference to millions of people

each and every day. So why not help us to celebrate their dedication by

taking part in our NHS Big Tea.

All you need to do is get together with some of your friends and family and

raise a cuppa to celebrate, say thanks and help support the nurses who have

touched you and your family’s lives.

Get in touch with the Charity Office for your own Big Tea

pack with everything you need to have a smashing time

and as Florence herself said: “The first sign of English

patients getting better is their craving again for tea.”

Our existing machines produce 2 dimensional images, which are good, but

there are significant benefits to the newer 3 dimensional machines such as:

We need

help with …

Toe Probe

They enable the

surgeon to look

both at the whole

heart as well as

allowing them to

focus on a specific

structure.

A traditional

2d image

They provide

comprehensive

and realistic views

of the cardiac

valves and any

problems there

might be with the

heart.

The real time

information

they produce

can provide

immediate

feedback on the

effectiveness of

any surgery.

In case you’re wondering – no,

Liverpool Heart and Chest

Hospital has not suddenly decided

to undertake foot surgery – TOE

stands for transoesophageal

echocardiogram which uses sound

waves from a probe to check the

structure of your heart and how

well it is working.

The probe is about as wide as an

index finger and goes in the mouth,

down the throat and into the

oesophagus. The probe produces

clearer and more accurate pictures

than those taken from the front of

the chest because the oesophagus

lies immediately behind the heart

and there is no interference from

the ribs or lungs.

TOE probes are used to check for

any infection in your heart valves,

for any blood clots, for tears in

your aorta (the largest blood vessel

in your body) and for any heart

defects, such as a hole in the heart.

In addition TOE probes are used for

patients about to undergo surgery

(roughly 2,500 patients each year

at LHCH) as they help to provide

additional vital information for our

surgeons prior to procedures such

as mitral valve surgery.

So you can see what a difference

it would make if we were able to

have these machines both for our

surgeons and for our patients and

we hope that you will want to help

us achieve this.

You can make your donation on the

A gift in your will can make a big

It’s been nearly 4 years now since our current

of course, lots of new things have happened since

then so we are looking to update and upgrade our

current site to give it a fresh new look.

To help us make it the best it could be we would really welcome your

opinions and ideas on what could be improved, what should be added and

maybe even what can be deleted!

You can get in touch with us at

your thoughts and while we mightn’t be

able to include all of them we would love

to hear what you think.
