Insight & Strategy – E-commerce & LogisticsE-commerce comes of ageWorldwide lockdown has accelerated the rise of e-commerce as consumers have turned to onlineshopping as never before. But this has also highlighted structural challenges for the sector.The logistics sector had already been onthe rise in recent years, but the Covid-19epidemic has put the spotlight on it asnever before.The impact of the health crisis has beentwofold: on the one hand, at a time whenother sectors have suffered, logistics has beenshown to be the strongest and most resilientasset class; on the other hand, problems inthe supply chain, inventory management andlabour supply have been magnified.The driver for the former has beene-commerce, which has grown exponentially,especially during lockdown. Increased relianceon online shopping has been a Europe-widetrend and one that experts believe is unlikelyto be reversed, leading to a permanentchange in people’s shopping habits.But the coronavirus crisis has also highlightedproblems, which have accelerated a trendtowards nearshoring and the regionalisation ofsupply chains, which together with a renewedfocus on technology and automation isaltering the dynamics of the logistics market.Eastern European countries, which have lowercosts and good direct transport links to themain Western European consumer markets,are likely to be the main beneficiaries of thenearshoring trend.Adobe Stock/TMLsPhotoGMany speculative developments have beenput on hold during the crisis, exacerbating thelack of supply.
