When I wrote‘We need more heroes’ back inDecember 2019 I couldn’t know howtrue it would turn out to be, as nobodyknew about the economic downturn andglobal health crises that would caused bythe coronavirus pandemic.This is a time for heroes, a time forindustry professionals to demonstrateleadership and guide their companiesthrough the crisis, trying to understandthe complexity of the situation on a macrolevel and to find out what it could mean forthe near and middle term.There is an awareness that life aftercoronavirus will not be the same and wehave tried to assess the varying influenceson the real estate business in our RealAsset Live online conferences week byweek as well as in our Special Report (freeto download).START OF SOMETHING NEWA crisis can be seen as a reset or even asthe opportunity to start something new – astart-up – which reminds me of my time inItaly where I lived from 1998 to 2008. Aftera year’s employment in a corporate group,my good friend Riccardo and I decided todive into the booming dotcom business.We registered all the important downtownstreet names in Milan as domains andbuilt up city portals for the local shopsto be present and easy to find – wewere the first to have big, zoomablemaps, long before Google Maps wasborn, and we quickly got many retail andF&B owners on board. We were smartenough to reconnect with real life andproduced printed maps for tourists andalso a MilanoOnline Member Card to getdiscounts in affiliated shops.It took days and nights of constant hardwork and many times we went in thewrong direction when Riccardo once said:‘We need to be the Armani of internet!’This was our belief and I still love thisphrase today as there is so much in it.By applying a ‘best in class’ attitude youwill find your competitive advantage anddoing it ‘the Italian way’ means that it willalso look good (You have read our Specialon Italy already?).If we apply this to the current situation wecould make good use of new ‘Armanis ofreal estate’. Reflect, stick your head abovethe parapet, think and rethink, do andredo, repeat again and again. Businessmodels need to be rethought and newideas need to be brought on board –innovation is more important than everand it needs to be sustainable – as weheard in our recent Innovation, Data &PropTech event from Antony Slumbers:‘What you always wanted to do andhaven’t done the last 10 years needs to bedone now!’Maybe now is the opportunity to shapeyour business for the future – be theArmani of real estate – elegant, designedfor today, confident and ultra-professional.We are trying to do this in our businessto support the industry: all our eventsare virtual and when we can go back tophysical events they will be hybrid, withlive streaming to reach a global audience.We relaunched the Real Asset Insightwebsite (www.realassetinsight.com),introduced new online event & interviewformats (ask me for info) and launcheda global online Real Estate Trade Fair& Conferences called REALX.global.And there will be another great serviceavailable soon focused on sharingknowledge.Again, I’ll be back talking aboutsomething ‘different’.
