y Jill Ellis-Worthington TRAVEL Between sun-up and sun-down, there is plenty to do and see in the area. In Playa Bejuco, you are equidistance from two great hiking opportunities. An hour’s drive south is Manual Antonio National Park and an hour north is Carara National Park. At the latter, you have a good chance of seeing scarlet macaws, colourful butterflies and moths, various types of lizards, tree-climbing ant eaters, howler monkeys and agoutis (a long-legged rodent the size of a large rabbit). The massive Guanacaste trees are stars of the show, and there are myriad of flowering plants providing a visual feast. If you venture to the former, a drive through the village of Manuel Antonio is very enjoyable along the winding, mountain roads. Two must-stops in this area are Biesanz Beach and El Avion restaurant. The beach is a steep climb down a hillside on rough terrain, so not ideal for those with bad knees, but it’s very much worth the effort. It has gently rolling waves – rather than the crashing surf at Playa Bejuco beach, which is ideal for boogie boarding On estuary boat tours, guides call monkeys from the jungles.
