From Friday, September 4,
restaurants in New Jersey will be
able to welcome diners indoors
– with some restrictions.
On a scale of 1 to 10, how
comfortable would you be
eating indoors at a restaurant
or drinking in a bar?
Stratford’s DENISE
SELLERS: 4. “My
main concern
would be adequate
ventilation,“ she
says. “But I’m not
that desperate to
dine out. Now that
I’m retired, I’ve quite
enjoyed learning to
cook again.”
TARA McGEEHAN of
Philadelphia: 2.
“College kids coming
home will start
dining indoors. That
doesn’t sound smart
to me,” she says. “I’m
now used to eating
out-of-doors, and
that’s just fine.”
JOSE MEJIAS of
West Deptford: 8.
“I’m sick of being
cooped up indoors. I
need my spirits lifted.
I’m ready to dine out
again.”
West Deptford’s
NORMA VAZQUEZ:
7. “I’m looking
forward to enjoying
family time again at
favorite restaurants,”
she says. “But I’m a
bit worried this could
lead to another
shutdown.”
ANDREW ZIRM
of Reisterstown MD:
5. “Until you get
inside a restaurant,
you don’t know how
far apart the diners
will be, or how good
the air circulation
will be. They’re both
concerns for me,”
he said.
Philadelphia’s WILL
DeSIMONE: 7.5. Or
2.5. “The optimist in
me hopes people will
be smart and that it’s
going to work out,”
says Will. “But the
pessimist sitting on
my shoulder reminds
me there are a lot of
idiots out there.”

A “Welcome back!” message
from Superintendent Chuck Klaus
I would like to first welcome all families, students and teachers to the 2020-21
school year at Haddonfield School District.
We are now a week away from our return to school for the fall of 2020. It would
certainly be an understatement to say this is a different opening than those we
have experienced in the past.
I am sure all of us could rattle off a litany of differences as well as things
we wish were different! Notably, some of these challenges have required our
administration team and teacher leaders to spend countless summer hours to
develop, revise, publish, and republish our return to school model.
Sometimes I feel as though we have spent the last six months talking about
the changes caused by the “new normal,” but today I’d like to take a moment to
look at how many things are still the same.
As a school district, we continue to uphold our commitment to providing
high-quality education to your children. We maintain high expectations for our
students, teachers, and administrators. We anticipate a year that – in spite of
opening with 50% capacity – will close with all of our students in school all day.
These are our goals, and we believe that a prudent start will help us to achieve
them.
As in every summer, a great deal of focus was placed on growth and
improvement. What may have gotten lost in the shuffle this summer are the
many accomplishments of the last 10 weeks not connected to COVID-19.
Curriculum has been rewritten and revised. HSD continually invests in
improving and modifying curriculum in all areas. Among other revisions, two
main areas of focus are improving the middle school Gifted and Talented
program and adding mandated LGBTQIA+ standards. Additionally, we invested
a great deal of work in designing professional development

specifically connected to distance and virtual
instruction based on what we learned in the spring.
The vestibule projects at Elizabeth Haddon and
J.F. Tatem Elementary Schools are 95% complete
and 100% functional. We are waiting for delivery of a
few final items before we can call them complete.
Cameras have been installed in the interior
and exterior of all district buildings. This adds an
additional level of safety.
With the help of the Haddonfield Educational
Trust, the area behind the stadium has been
upgraded. What was once an expanse of blacktop
is now a showpiece for spectators to experience at
school events.
Work has started on a new air-handling unit
tower at the high school. Connected to this project will be the addition of an
outdoor classroom and a garden seating area providing an outdoor extension
to the cafeteria.
We also continue to work on our three strategic plans. We will nurture our
students and teachers by providing social-emotional training and support.
We will continue to empower by investing time and training into innovative
teaching strategies and learning environments. Finally we work to inspire
everyone to embrace cultural competency and pursue social justice as we
build on lessons learned at our June Town Hall meeting. The target date for our
next open forum is early October.
Last, please take a look at our website n. If you have any questions at any
time during the school year, please look at the top middle of the web page
under “Contact Us” where there is an “Ask a Question” tab that you simply
click on and ask us any question(s) you wish. We will get you an answer as
quickly as we can. Have a wonderful school year, everyone. Welcome back!

First juvenile
case of COVID
On Tue Sep 1,
the Camden County
Department of Health
reported that a female
younger than 10 has
contracted the novel
coronavirus, COVID-19.
This is the first juvenile
case reported for
Haddonfield.
Three additional cases
on Wed Sep 2 – males
in their 10s, 20s, and
30s – brought the total
number of confirmed
cases locally to 92, with
seven fatalities.
The first teen case in
Haddonfield was logged
on Jul 2 – 15 weeks
after Haddonfield’s first
COVID-19 case was
reported. Since Jul 2,
11 teens have tested
positive: 7 males and
4 females. During the
same period, only two
residents older than
60 have been added to
Haddonfield’s tally.
In Camden County
as of Tue Sep 2, the
total number of cases
stood at 9,836, with 564
deaths. For New Jersey,
192,595 cases with
14,181 confirmed deaths
and an additional 1,783
probable deaths.
The transmission rate
– a key metric – rose
on Sep 2 to 0.96. (A
rate of 1.0 means that,
on average, each new
case will produce one
additional new case.
When the transmission
rate falls below 1,0, it’s a
good sign. When it rises
above 1.0, it’s cause for
concern.)

WE NOW TREAT
for SPOTTED
LANTERNFLY!
A REALLY BAD BUG HAS INVADED OUR AREA
The Spotted Lanternfly causes serious damage in trees
including oozing sap, wilting, leaf curling, and tree dieback. Also,
when spotted lanternflies feed, they excrete a sugary substance
(“honeydew”) that encourages the growth of black sooty mold.
It’s harmless to people, but it causes damage to plants and can
coat decks and play equipment. ALSO, the Spotted Lanternfly
is a HUGE threat to New Jersey’s agriculture industry.
In the fall, these bugs will lay egg masses with 30 to 50 eggs
each. They are called bad bugs for a reason. If you see a
Spotted Lanternfly, email SLF-plantindustry@ag.nj.gov or call
1-833-223-2840 (BAD-BUG-0).
What else? Kill it! Squash it, smash it ... just get rid of it.
Your BEST DEFENSE is to CALL US FIRST! We can treat for
Spotted Lanternfly, in advance.

A Heartfelt
“Thank You”
To Our Beloved Haddonfield Community:
On behalf of the entire Maniscalco family, I would like to thank all of the Haddonfield
businesses and residents who showered my family with messages and offerings of love and
support throughout the past few weeks.
As soon as the Haddonfield community learned about my husband Anthony Maniscalco’s
tragic fall, they rallied together to help my family in our time of grief. Our family cannot
thank you enough for all of the cards, donations, flowers, fundraisers, and support during
this incredibly difficult time. Even in the midst of these difficult economic times, Haddonfield
made such generous contributions to our family; your kindness and love have moved us
deeply and provided us with the strength to persevere.
A special thanks to our neighbor, Marcello De Feo at Valente’s Cucina, who organized the
GoFundMe fundraiser to help pay for the costs of the funeral services; words can not express
my family’s sincere gratitude for your overwhelmingly thoughtful gesture.
Gracie’s Ice Cream Parlor was Anthony Maniscalco’s pride and joy. When the
effects of the pandemic first hit the community, my husband vowed that our family would
dip into our personal savings and do everything in our power to keep Gracie’s running in the
hopes of continuing to bring smiles to Haddonfield residents. The family will continue to
run the business in Anthony’s honor, and thanks to the Haddonfield community, Anthony’s
memory will live on.
I would be remiss if I did not mention the other businesses, residents, and vendors in
neighboring communities who also reached out to the Maniscalco family. From the bottom
of our hearts, thank you for your love and support. While no actions or words can bring
Anthony back, it is comforting to know that his memory lives in your thoughts and prayers.
With Sincere Gratitude and Love,
Nancy Maniscalco and Family

HADDONFIELD POST 38
World War II: “These proceedings are closed”
The detonation of a nuclear bomb above Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, three days
after a similar weapon leveled much of Hiroshima, convinced the Japanese that their
imperial ambitions could not be sustained.
They agreed to the Allies’ surrender terms with one condition: that the declaration
would not include “any demand which prejudices the prerogatives of His Majesty
as a Sovereign ruler” – in other words, that the position of the Emperor in Japanese
society would be maintained.
News of Japan’s acceptance of the surrender terms was announced to the
American public via radio on August 14, sparking massive celebrations. The
following day, a recorded address by Emperor Hirohito was broadcast across the
Empire, announcing the surrender of Japan to the Allies.
The occupation of Japan began on August 28, led by General Douglas MacArthur,
Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers. On September 2, he presided over the
surrender ceremony, held on the deck of the United States Navy battleship USS
Missouri, in Tokyo Bay. He was the only person who spoke publicly:
“We are gathered here, representatives
of the major warring powers, to conclude
a solemn agreement whereby peace may
be restored.
“The issues involving divergent ideals
and ideologies have been determined on
the battlefields of the world, and hence
are not for our discussion or debate.
“Nor is it for us here to meet,
representing as we do a majority of
the peoples of the earth, in a spirit of
distrust, malice, or hatred.
“But rather it is for us, both victors and vanquished, to
rise to that higher dignity which alone befits the sacred purposes we are about to
serve, committing all of our peoples unreservedly to faithful compliance with the
undertakings they are here formally to assume.
“It is my earnest hope, and indeed the hope of all mankind, that from this solemn
occasion a better world shall emerge out of the blood and carnage of the past – a
world founded upon faith and understanding, a world dedicated to the dignity of man
and the fulfillment of his most cherished wish for freedom, tolerance, and justice.” *
The instrument of surrender (one original in English, one in Japanese) was signed
by representatives from Japan, United States, China, Great Britain, USSR, Australia,
Canada, France, Netherlands, and New Zealand.
The signing completed, MacArthur provided a benediction:
“Let us pray that peace now be restored to the world, and that God will preserve it
always.
“These proceedings are closed.”

With great sadness we mark the passing,
on August 10, 2020 – at age 100 – of
Charles A. Sayre
a devoted Rotarian for 67 years, and a revered
member of the Rotary Club of Haddonfield
for 55 years. He was our senior member.
Charles served as the Club’s president in 1983-84.
He was the longtime chaplain for Rotary District
7640, which honored him in 2009 with its
prestigious Vocational Service Award. He and his
late wife Lucile were both Paul Harris Fellows.
Charles was the senior pastor at Haddonfield
United Methodist Church for 25 years.
Having become aware early in his ministry
of the desperate needs of families in Camden,
he mobilized members of area churches to support
churches in Camden. Together, they formed
Respond Inc., a non-profit organization that sought,
initially, to provide proper child care in Camden for
children of working parents. Under his leadership,
Respond became a community powerhouse that
today provides a wide range of vital services.
Charles Sayre was the Rotary motto “Service Above
Self” personified. We honor for him for his service
to Rotary, to our Club, and to our community.
We will miss him ... a lot.

If you think you can’t have it all in Haddonfield,
you need to see this extraordinary property!
A move-in-ready house on an unbelievable lot
within walking distance to town is definitely hard
to come by – but here it is waiting for you.
Well over 5,000 sq ft of living space and a yard

quite do this home justice.
While you are sure to be impressed with the

A Zoom dinner
by candlelight
When it became
clear, as the pandemic
developed, that the

not hold its Candlelight
Dinner at Tavistock in
March, as planned, the
Society optimistically
rebooked the Country

The date still stands,
but the venue has
changed: The dinner will
be held by candlelight
and via Zoom.
This year’s guest
speaker is Joel Spivak, a

Each ticket-holder who

Commissioners introduce
2020 budget
During their regular meeting on Mon Aug 17, the
Borough commissioners introduced the municipal
budget for 2020.
The budget proposes total expenditure of
$19,181,684.00, of which $12,232,816 will be
raised through property taxes. The proposed
local purpose tax rate is 0.5284 cents per $100 of
assessed property valuation.
For the owner of a property assessed at the
borough average of $488,481, local purpose taxes
will be $2,581, an increase of $26 over last year’s
taxes. Two other examples:
• Property value $244,241. Taxes $1,291 – up $14.
• Property value $732,722. Taxes $3,872 – up $40.
Local purpose (municipal) taxes represent a little
over 17% of the total property tax bill.
Apart from employee salaries, benefits, and
pension payments ($8,634,733), which make up
47% of the budget, the largest expenditures include
stormwater improvements ($2,995,000) and the
Borough’s annual road program ($2,240,000).
The Budget document is available here:
bit.ly/ 32STdhX n.
A public hearing on the budget will be held during
the Commissioners’ regular meeting on Tue Sep 22,
after which they may vote to adopt.

Gov. Driscoll named to NJ Hall of Fame
The New Jersey Hall of Fame announced recently that Alfred E. Driscoll of
Haddonfield will be inducted as a member of the Class of 2019. He was New
Jersey’s 43rd governor (first two-term governor), serving from 1948 to 1954.
A 1921 graduate of Haddonfield High School, Driscoll served as a member
of the Haddonfield Board of Education, Board of Commissioners, and the
Historical Society. He was one of six recipients in the inaugural class for the
Haddonfield Alumni Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award, in 1994.
He spearheaded the adoption in 1947 of a new constitution for New Jersey
that, among other things, ended racial segregation in the state’s public schools.
Alfred E. Driscoll died in 1975, at age 72, and was buried in the Haddonfield
Baptist Cemetery. Descendants own and occupy homes on Hopkins Lane,
including Birdwood, the white house on the bend, and elsewhere in town.
The Hall will host a virtual ceremony on Sun Oct 18.

Haddonfield Educational Trust
PROJECT PROFILE
Supporting the Public Schools,
Teachers, Staff, and Students of Haddonfield.
When news of a novel coronavirus began to be
reported in the media early this year, our school
administrators took notice. During an in-service on
February 18, they addressed the effect it might have
on public education in Haddonfield, and by the time
Gov. Murphy issued a stay-at-home order on March
21, they had plans in place for remote learning.
The administrative focus then shifted to the safe
and effective opening of schools in September, and to
covering the extraordinary costs involved.
In late August,
we became aware
that Bluetooth
headsets would
make it possible
for teachers
to interact
simultaneously
and seamlessly
with all students,
whether in-person
and remote. We swiftly approved the expenditure of
more than $20,000 for 100 headsets. Now, every
teacher in every school will have a top-of-theline
Jabra Bluetooth headset on their desk.
Like many not-for-profits locally and across the
country, Haddonfield Educational Trust had to cancel
activities and events that generate funds for its grants
and scholarships – our annual golf outing, for
example. If you can help us make up even a part
of what we’ve “lost,” we’ll be most grateful.
You can donate easily and securely online, at
haddonfieldeducationaltrust.org/donate, or by mail to
PO Box 178, Haddonfield NJ 08033.
Thank you!

A WHAT race?
New Year’s Eve 1897:
Bicycle riders raced
through Haddonfield to
try to catch a leader who
happened to be wearing
... a large, inflatable frog
costume.
The organizer of the
1897 race – and the
rider wearing the frog
costume – was G. L. Carr,
a clerk for the druggist
C. S. Braddock Jr., at 201
East Main Street (now
Kings Highway).
Newspapers around
the country ran articles
about the 11-mile race.
Inspired by these
reports, the Historical
Society has decided
to hosta virtual
Haddonfield Frog Race
during September and is
challenging participants
to complete 11 miles
biking, running, walking,
or even swimming before
October 1. It’s a fun,
family-friendly diversion.
Frog costumes optional!
Registration for this
fundraising event is
$25 for ages 13 and up,
and $20 for ages 12 and
under. The first 100
registrants will get a free
tee-shirt with an image
of the original frogcostumed
bike rider. All
who submit completed
race forms before
October 1 will be entered
to win four tickets to the
Philadelphia Zoo.
The 2020 version
of the Haddonfield
Frog Race is virtual,
of course – inside or
outside, fast or slow, in
one outing or 100, – and
all participants must
follow COVID-19 health
guidelines and safety
regulations.

The wait is over ... It’s time to dine!
Participating food and beverage establishments in downtown Haddonfield,
including restaurants, coffee shops, dessert shops, and other food retailers,
will again open their doors for indoor dining, starting Fri Sep 4.
Many Haddonfield restaurants moved seating outdoors during the past few
months to serve patrons in accordance with pandemic health guidelines. Gov.
Murphy’s recent announcement permits seating indoors, up to 25% of capacity.
“We have been patiently awaiting the re-opening of indoor dining services,
and that day has finally arrived,” said Remi Fortunato, the Partnership for
Haddonfield’s retail recruiter. “We are thrilled by this news, and look forward
to welcoming visitors to our one-of-a-kind dining scene with both indoor and
outdoor seating options.”
Patrons are asked to wear masks unless eating, and maintain six feet of
distance between others while dining.
Downtown Haddonfield offers an assortment of dining choices, including fine
restaurants, quaint coffee shops, and sweet ice cream shops.
Chef-owned restaurants offer a range of cuisines, from Italian and Asian
to Mediterranean, Indian, and more. Casual dining options include hoagies,
pizza, organic juice drinks, yogurt, and more. Haddonfield also has an array
of gourmet and food-oriented retailers, with shops selling everything from
gourmet cupcakes and specialty olive oils to food items from France and the
British Isles.
Outdoor seating will continue at many establishments, weather permitting.
Curbside pick-up of pre-ordered retail purchases remains available at many
shops, and restaurants continue to offer delivery and curbside pickup.
Downtown Haddonfield has continually promoted ways for everyone to
shop and dine safely. Its “Haddonfield Cares” campaign which focuses on
the importance of wearing masks while in the Downtown, practicing social
distancing, and frequent hand sanitizing.

The next crisis:
Sand shortage!
Did you know that
Saudi Arabia imports
sand from Australia?
With the world’s
population increasing
and becoming ever more
urbanized, more and
more sand is needed
for the construction of
buildings, malls, office
towers. In some places,
sand is in such short
supply that shipments
have become the target
of thieves.
Sand is one of the
bases of our civilization,
and the sands of time are
running out.
On Tue Sep 22 at 7pm,
the Public Library will
host a presentation by
guest lecturer Buntzie

shortage of sand.
Titled “What will we

After operating for several weeks on a call-ahead,
pick-up basis, the Haddonfield Farmers Market

This year, the market is located in the Archer

who drive are asked to park in nearby streets or the
