Unfortunately, not everything in the 2020 guide is rosy for wildlife. One of the major issues the province did not move forward on was a revised start date for marten trapping. In recent years, grizzly bears have been severely injured while trying to remove the bait from small box traps used to trap marten. If the government had pushed the start date for marten trapping until after bears are in hibernation, it could have saved needless injuries to bears. The BC government and trappers are working together to modify traps that could reduce the likelihood of grizzly bears being injured. It remains to be seen whether this will be an effective measure to reduce injuries. Hunting and trapping regulations are only one tool in the toolkit to manage for wildlife and ecosystem health. We need standalone legislation that puts wildlife and ecosystem health in the forefront when making decisions on forestry, mining, agriculture, and recreation. Until that happens, Wildsight will continue to push for protection of our vulnerable wildlife in a province with increasing pressures from human encroachment and industrial development taking precedence over wildlife in BC. Wildsight.ca Kootenay Tyler Rice – Volunteer of the Year Community Futures Central Kootenay (CFCK) is pleased to recognize Tyler Rice as Volunteer of the Year. Since joining the CFCK Board of Directors in 2018, Tyler Rice quickly expanded his involvement in the non-profit, chairing the CFCK Self Employment and Cannabis Business Transition Initiative Committee, and assuming the role of treasurer for the West Kootenay Boundary Community Investment Coop. “Tyler’s always keen, volunteering his time, energy, and expertise to help move projects forward.” said Andrea Wilkey, Executive Director of CFCK, “When COVID-19 hit, he shared his expertise as an accountant and entrepreneur on our weekly business roundtable.” When asked about his time volunteering: “At CFCK, I’ve had several opportunities to get involved with projects in the idea phase,” said Tyler Rice. “It’s very rewarding to see them develop into programs and services that support the business community.” Tyler Rice and his family moved to the Kootenay region in 2014 to launch a mining venture near Salmo. Prior to this, his time in Calgary included work with oil and gas, healthcare, and real estate. Tyler Rice is also founding partner of Rice&Co, an accounting firm that serves businesses in Alberta and British Columbia. “Tyler shows true commitment to the work that Community Futures does,” said Chris Bell, Chair of the CFCK Board of Directors. “Whether he’s supporting the Self Employment program or getting involved in new programs such as the West Kootenay Boundary Community Investment Co-op and the Cannabis Business Transition Initiative.” Legalization of recreational cannabis in Canada introduced a complex licensing process. The Cannabis Business Transition Initiative (CBTI) was created to help local entrepreneurs navigate the regulatory system and create sustainable cannabis businesses. “Early on, we identified the need for a local cannabis processing cooperative. Tyler has been key in laying the groundwork for this project.” said Paul Kelly, CBTI Program Manager. “Developing this cooperative improves the viability of cannabis business in the region.” In addition to his volunteer work with CFCK, Tyler Rice also volunteers as assistant coach for Nelson Minor Hockey; coach for the Nelson Soccer Association; firefighter for the North Shore Fire Department; volunteer board member of the Chamber of Mines of Eastern BC; and treasurer of the Redfish Elementary School Parent Advisory Committee. Wood Carving Symposium this September! Rossland’s first Wood Carving Symposium is September 11-13. This unique event brings three local artists to downtown Rossland where three new wooden sculptures will be created for Centennial Trail. The sculptures will be carved live so the community has the opportunity to witness the process of making from concept through to fruition. The artists will be working openly, in the parking lot next to the Cold Beer and Wine Store at the corner of Columbia Avenue and Spokane Street from 10am to 4pm daily. Our artists are Columbia Basin Artists: Lars Baggenstos (Rossland), Mike Williams (Rossland/Patterson), and Michael Penny (Fernie)! They will each carve a sculpture with the theme of “Encounters in the Woods”. Originally dreamed to have Indigenous, provincial and international artists participating alongside local Columbia Basin artists in a live sculpture carving event with presentations and other activities that share some of the history of carving and its influence on cultures around the world. Due to covid-19 and this unprecedented year the RCAC is keeping our first sculpture symposium safe and small. We are extremely lucky to have amazing local sculptors participating. This project seeks to connect recreation, art, nature, and culture by showing the development of a sculpture from concept to completion and displaying the completed sculptures in a natural, non-traditional, and unexpected environment. We recognize that a public art piece that is professional, of high artistic merit, and a subject that people can identify with, creates an appreciation and legacy for the arts by the general public. The presence of public art demonstrates to visitors and residents that Rossland is not just an active sporting community but also a dynamic arts & culture community that makes art accessible. The community will be able to watch the creative and technical processes of the artists. After the event, the sculptures will be placed on Centennial Trail for trail users to enjoy year-round. Nelson Women’s Centre hires new executive director The Nelson & District Women’s Centre is pleased to welcome Andrea Carter as its new executive director. “We’re thrilled to have Andrea join us, with her experience in community work and her education in non-profit management,” says Yvette Janzen, chair of the board of directors. “She has the perfect blend of skills, as well as clear feminist values.” Carter has a bachelor’s degree in non-profit management and is certified as a Public Participation Professional. Over the past 13 years, she’s moved from front-line work to leadership roles, and has participated in several government advisory bodies, representing under-served and traditionally marginalized communities. Carter’s most recent position has been as the director of programs at HIV Community Link, providing support and advocacy services to communities across southern Alberta. Through her work, Carter has demonstrated commitment to building organizations and communities that are collaborative, empowered, informed and adaptive. Born in Nelson, Carter is excited to be returning to the area. She enjoys reading, music, exploring the outdoors, and training her “exceptionally smart and equally stubborn” canine pal.“I’m so pleased by the opportunity to work closely with the community in a leadership role at the Women’s Centre,” Carter says. “My goals and motivation are to set a clear and bold vision for the future of the Women’s Centre by involving all members and partners in co-creating our future.” Janzen says Carter has been working remotely through August and will be on-site at the Centre on September 8. “Andrea’s first weeks with the Women’s Centre will involve hiring key staff for the drop-in and volunteer coordinator roles and planning for a safe re-opening of the Centre.” Follow the Centre’s website (www.nelsonwomenscentre. com), Janzen says, for news of upcoming activities and events. Kerry Reed’s Fishing Report Most of our trips have been half day trips, as the weather has been too hot to spend the whole day out. Fishing has been pretty good considering. Our last group had a good morning trip with a bunch of rainbows and bull trout to the boat. Mornings and evenings have been the best. What are they biting on? On the lake it’s been a mix of croc spoons on the surface, or flasher/hoochie down 100ft. That’s the short and sweet report.
