Alumni Tigers Participate in Record Phonathon More than 2,400 Tiger alumni answered the call during the 25th annual Alumni Phonathon, and, thanks to them, the school has commitments to send $212,767 to the tuition assistance fund for students who are currently enrolled at St. X. This is a record amount of dollars, beating the 2008 total by more than $13,000. This success would not have been possible without 412 volunteer callers during the month of March, including 73 current students. This is our largest number of volunteers in the history of the Alumni Phonathon. More than a dozen classes excelled in recruiting volunteers for this important event. The classes of 1952, 1953, 1955, 1957, 1958, 1960, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1971, 1972, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1993, and 2003 all had a minimum of eight callers. For the second year in a row, the class of 1982 had the highest participation with 19 callers! 12 Class Notes Class of 1936 William Cooper, Sr., was posthumously inducted into the U.S. Tennis Association Kentucky Hall of Fame on January 29. Mr. Cooper was recognized for his support of junior tennis, including his relationship with St. X, obtaining indoor training facilities before indoor tennis facilities were built, and his visionary efforts in the area of philanthropy, community service, and civil rights. The honor was accepted by his son and namesake, St. X class of ‘57 Bill Cooper, Jr. Class of 1943 Class Agent: William F. Lippy (502) 458-5608 Our Class has met annually for over 40 years for food, drinks, games, and camaraderie. At our 50th, I suggested we establish our X’43 Endowment of $50,000, and you all generously and immediately responded with just over that goal. In the ensuing years, many needy students have received funds for their tuition from the interest of our Endowment, and they have written their heartfelt thanks to our Class. Through later bequests, the total has risen to over $83,000. I have now raised our target to a $100,000 Endowment, and I know we can make it! Please remember our X’43 Endowment Fund in your generosity now or in your will. With Jim Huter’s recent passing, we now have 53 members still in this Vale of Tears and there are over 150 classmates in that Big Reunion In The Sky! Please remember to attend the 50-Year Club celebration on June 10 and let’s get together there for our annual reunions. Center in downtown Louisville. It features famous Kentucky athletes. Class of 1955 Class Agents: Howard Meyer (502) 458-5820 and Bob Weihe (502) 459-6397 Jim Augustus retired after many years selling office equipment. Jim spends a lot of time hunting and fishing. He has held the record for the largest Brook Trout caught in Kentucky since 1982. He is also #3 on the list for harvesting the largest wild turkey. Jim and his wife, Sarah, live in the Highlands area. Jim Barker retired after 30 years with ORI, an office products company. Jim and his wife, Bernice, who is an artist, are active in creating and selling handcrafted children’s furniture and miscellanous items – all hand- painted by Bernice. They live in the Crescent Hill area. Jim Downs retired after 32 years as manager of the Brill Glass Company. He plays a lot of golf and still breaks 80. He and Fran, his wife of 50 years, live in the Highlands area. Jim Gates, a CPA, retired a few years ago as the chief accounting officer for the Louisville Metro Revenue Commission. Look for Jim at St. Raphael Church as an altar server or as a Eucharistic Minister. He is also a volunteer at Churchill Downs. Jim and his wife, Judy, live in the Highlands area, but still find time to relax at their second home at Cumberland Lake. Jim Pahler, Sr., owned and operated “Our Place,” a retail beverage shop on Poplar Level Road for many years. He is now retired and his son, Jim, Jr., operates the business. Jim, Sr., and his wife, Marilyn, live in the Bashford Manor Lane area. Jim Rademaker recently returned to Louisville from North Carolina after retiring a few years ago as plant manager of GE/Black & Decker Companies. You’ll find Jim on the golf course once his “new knee” is working properly. Class of 1956 Class Agent: Alan Dries (502) 875-0416 55-Year Reunion to be held June 11. Details will be mailed. Class of 1960 Class Agent: Bob Benson (502) 583-8373 John Evans, Jr., was posthumously inducted into the U.S. Tennis Association Kentucky Hall of Fame on January 29. As a 17-year-old, he won the 1960 National Public Parks Tournament. By then, he already had won two state singles championships and three doubles titles at St. X. At Bellarmine University, he won four straight Kentucky Intercollegiate Conference singles championships. He lost only four matches during his high school and college career. He was the Great Lakes Valley Conference Coach of the Year in 1987 at Northern Kentucky University. Mike Cahill (middle) was a member of Virginia Tech’s first basketball team to play in Cassell Coliseum 50 years ago. This past January, when his alma mater hosted Florida State, the team was recognized during the game for going unbeaten at home and as Atlantic Coast Conference Champs. Tom Fisher will retire May 31 after 25 years of service at Bellarmine University. After that, he will consult part-time for Bellarmine and become a full-time golfer. Wanda and Roland Bisig will return to Louisville September 20 after 13 years in Margate, Fla., and most recently 22 years in St. Louis. Roland is looking forward to catching up with his old classmates. Class of 1963 Class Agent: Jerry Barnes (502) 228-1994 In recognition of anti-death penalty work, the Kentucky Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (KACDL) has given its Bill of Rights Enforcer Award to Donald H. Vish for effectively supporting and vigilantly protecting the Bill of Rights for all citizens accused of crime and subjected to prosecution and punishment by the government. The award was presented in November 2010 at the KACDL annual meeting.
