Making History
If there was a Louisville culinary history
book, chances are you would find the
Masterson name with its own chapter.
With a history dating back 73 years,
Masterson’s Catering has recently relocated
its growing operation to the Irish Hill
neighborhood. Run by Saint Xavier alumni
and Masterson brothers Paul ’82, Brian
’86, and Andrew ’88, along with sister,
Sueanna, the company closed their popular
banquet hall, located on South Third Street
near the University of Louisville campus, to
make way for new student housing.
Masterson’s Catering operates several
well-known Louisville landmarks, including
Captain’s Quarters, the Olmsted, the namesake
catering business, as well as the CQ Princess
Yacht, a full-service floating restaurant on
the Ohio River. During the peak summer
months, the company employees 300 people.
With the business now in its third generation
of operation, the Masterson brothers credit
the discipline they learned at St. X from
notable teachers like Br. Borgia and Br.
Edward Driscoll, as an important component
to running a thriving family business. It also
doesn’t hurt that they each have a
specialty. Paul, a Culinary Institute of
America graduate, handles the kitchen
operations, while Brian and Sueanna run
the catering business. Andrew manages
the popular Captain’s Quarters restaurant.
Their oldest sibling, Nick ’81, started in the
family business, but broke away to become
a Louisville Metro Police Officer.
With room to grow in their new home,
the Mastersons believe their business will
continue to expand as they begin a new
chapter in Louisville culinary history.
Extreme
Producer
In October 2010, ABC’s Extreme Makeover:
Home Edition chose to change the life of a
struggling Louisville family – the Lampe’s,
who have two sons enrolled at St. X, John,
a senior, and Justin, a freshman. Behind the
scenes of that production and following
every occurrence at the site was Chad
Harrison, ’94, working with ABC as the
Associate Story Producer. His task
was to ensure that everything happening
onsite was being covered, recorded, and
then conveyed to the story to be shown on
TV. Chad is no novice. He worked on the
recent season of Dancing with the Stars
as associate field producer and states,
“Everything I do is very important in
telling the true story you see on TV.”
He recalls his days at St. X with Brother
John Wills pushing him to succeed and
says “St. X taught me responsibility and,
most of all, the hard-work mentality.”
On the job with Extreme Makeover, Chad
works directly with the Executive Producer
and Senior Story Producer to convey the
importance of every production job to the
success of the entire project.
Chad has enjoyed his time in Louisville, but
has been working across the U.S. this season
from Maryland to Idaho. After graduating
from U of L with a major in Computer
Information Systems, he went to work for
a web hosting company. A few years ago,
he got the urge to move to Los Angeles,
and got his big break when he was hired by
a Louisville native to work for the show Little
People, Big World on TLC. Chad’s success in
producing is revealed on TV each week and,
you can be assured, will be for many shows
to come.
Canine
Companion
November 13 was a bittersweet day for
Marty Fischer, ’76, and wife Cathy.
That’s the day their beloved Maureen,
a six-month-old yellow Labrador retriever,
left the family home in Orlando, Fla.,
for a final 6–12 months of training in a
very unique service. That special puppy
came to the Fischer’s at the very young age
of 8 weeks and had been their constant
companion for 16 weeks.
If Maureen gets through that next stage of
training, she will be transferred to one of four
special assignments in which she will assist
and care for special needs individuals,
ranging from children undergoing chemotherapy,
to nursing home residents, to people confined
to wheelchairs. She might even provide ears
to a deaf person.
Six years ago, the “puppy raiser” Fisher’s,
through Cathy’s boss at Universal Studios,
attended “Tails and Tales Gala,” where they
were introduced to Canine Companions for
Independence, a nonprofit organization that
enhances the lives of people with disabilities
by providing highly trained assistance dogs and
ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships.
Maureen is the third service animal trained
by the Fischer’s, who, after witnessing the
appearance of an autistic child at the Gala,
decided that they would commit to a puppy
and the time and financial responsibilities
that go with the CCI program.
The Fischer’s share their passion for the
program by interviewing potential “puppy
raisers” in the Orlando area. Of the last six
interviewees, five are now raising and training
puppies, most of which are pure-bred Labs.
By being Canine Companions, Marty and
Cathy live out, in a unique way, a principle
of a St. X education: the call to serve others in
need. It has been said that a dog is “man’s
best friend.” Now, more than ever, Marty
Fischer understands this.
Links to Success
When Mark Kirchdorfer ’91 was at St.
X, his dream was to become a professional
golfer and play at the top 100 golf courses
in the country. Almost 20 years later, he can
say that he’s well on his way to achieving at
least half of that dream.
Growing up in a family of golfers enabled
Mark to develop his skills before going on
to star on the golf teams at St. X and the
University of Dayton. To date, he has played
20 of the top 100 courses in the U.S. and
plans to continue travelling the country with
his clubs until he reaches the century mark.
When he’s not playing golf, Mark serves as
Chief Operating Officer of ISCO Industries.
Founded in 1962 by his father as an irrigation
supply company, the company is now a
manufacturer and distributor of specialized
irrigation piping to 23 countries around
the world. For Mark, the most rewarding
part of his job is making a positive impact
on the lives of others by providing jobs for
their 300 employees. Because of the global
nature of the business and current economic
conditions, finding quality, passionate people
is a challenge, but one that Mark is excited
about overcoming.
Helping others doesn’t stop in the workplace
for Mark. He is a board member of and leads
an annual golf outing for Nativity Academy,
a private, Catholic middle school in Louisville
that is co-sponsored by the Xaverian Brothers.
Students at Nativity come from families
facing economic challenges who are
afforded extensive tuition assistance, both
to attend Nativity, and, hopefully, a local,
Catholic high school. This reminds Mark of
his days at St. X when he got to know
classmates from diverse economic and
educational backgrounds. For Mark, such
diversity is a key factor in education, and
he plans to foster this diversity through his
work at Nativity.
Football
Senior John Allen was a two-year starter
for the varsity football team. As an outside
linebacker, John completed the regular
season ranked second on the team in
tackles. As injuries piled up on the Tigers
during the year, John stepped up to become
an important cog on both sides of the ball,
becoming one of only a few young men
to play an important role on both offense
and defense. His leadership, integrity, and
humility led to his selection as a Saint Xavier
Student Ambassador. He is the Social Chair
for the Saint Xavier Student Council and an
avid participant in intramurals. He continues
to do volunteer work within the community
and participates in Project Warm.
Cross Country
Austin Carter was a consistent
performer for the top ranked 2010 Tiger
cross country squad all season. A four-year
letterman in both Cross Country and Track,
Austin used his experience and leadership
to help the Tiger Harriers capture a state
championship in 2009 and a team runner-up
finish in 2010. During the 2010 track
season, he was a member of the 2009
KY 3A State Champion 4 x 800 meter
relay team that holds the school record of
7:56. He has received multiple All-State and
Academic All-State honors in both sports.
Additionally, Austin is a member of National
Honor Society and Peer Leaders at St. X.
Outside of school, he does volunteer work
with Dare to Care Food Bank, Apple Patch
Community, Kosair Children’s Hospital and
Creasey Mahan Nature Preserve.
Golf
Michael Ising is an outstanding
example of a Saint Xavier student athlete.
A four-year letterman and member of two
state championship teams in golf, and
a three-year starter for the Tiger varsity
basketball team, Michael has still managed
to maintain a 4.9 GPA and enter his senior
year ranked 7th in the Class of 2011!
This fall he represented St. X as one of five
players at the State Golf Tournament where
the team brought home the State Runner-Up
trophy. His lowest two-day score for the
golf team this year was 142, and he ended
the year with a stroke average of 77.
An active member of the Student Activities
Council, Michael participates in the student
tutoring program, volunteers at a nursing
home and St. Joe’s Children’s Home during
the summer, and recently completed the
missionary trip to Belize where he helped
build a home for a needy family.
Fall Athletics
It was a season of recovery for the Saint and golf teams had outstanding seasons,
Xavier athletic program that made history each placing second in the State. Facing a
last fall capturing four KHSAA titles in foot- tough schedule, the soccer team compiled
ball, soccer, golf, and cross country. A young a 16-2-2 regular season record, but lost to
football team finished the regular season eventual state champion, Collegiate, in the
8-2, but lost the battle against Trinity in the
third round of the playoffs. The cross country
fourth round of postseason play.
Soccer
Oliver Brown is a four-year letterman for
the soccer team and an All-State selection
in one of the toughest spots on the field.
During his career in the goal for the Tigers,
he has made numerous incredible plays
in the net while helping the team to an
amazing 89-6-5 record that included three
state championships. Oliver and his fellow
goal-keepers combined for an unbelievable
total of sixty shutouts during this recordsetting
run. Head Coach Andy Schulten on
his All-State keeper: “Oliver is a tremendous
asset to this team. He allows us to play
much more aggressively because we have
so much confidence in his ability as a keeper.
He will be successful at the next level
wherever he chooses to play.”
The journey from a Midwestern city
like Louisville to Hollywood stardom
is apt to be difficult, often ending in
disappointment if the goal is glitzy parties
and Oscar nominations. But the journey from
that same Midwestern city to a career as an
actor, director, screenwriter, and entrepreneur
is one where hard work and preparation is
rewarded by other successes, like those
celebrated by William Mapother ’83.
Mapother has embarked on an arduous
journey from his beginnings in Louisville to
a Hollywood career long on critical acclaim
while short on the celebrity trappings of
celluloid success.
You will not find Mapother on the cover of
a tabloid in the checkout aisle. You will find
him in his office, working. You will not see
Mapother self-promoting on reality TV. You
will see him auditioning, writing, and learning
more about all aspects of the industry. In
reality, you may not see Mapother at all –
that’s the goal of any great actor. He becomes
his roles. He disappears into the character.
Mapother’s performance as Ethan Rom on
the recently concluded hit TV show Lost may
have gained him his broadest exposure, but
his powerful and thought-provoking turn
as Marisa Tomei’s estranged husband in the
Oscar-nominated In the Bedroom gained him
his most critical acclaim.
While those two roles have emerged as
weigh stations on what continues to be a
successful career, they are certainly not what
defines Mapother. He shies away from the
cliché moniker of Renaissance Man, but the
body of work Mapother has amassed over
his two decades in the industry is not limited to
any one particular genre, medium or discipline.
He has acted for television and on the big
screen and is writing and producing an
independent film. He has written, directed,
and performed on the stage (including a stint
locally in a 2008 Actor’s Theatre production
of Glengarry Glen Ross). He has served on the
board of the Screen Actors Guild, does voice
work in narration, animation, and video games,
and co-founded a film marketing, data, and
financing company.
William notes, “Working is like exercise, in
that different types work different muscles.
It’s fun and healthy to keep them as active
as possible.”
In true character actor form, Mapother has
managed to carve his own niche in the
industry. His insistence on hard work, fierce
preparation and a willingness to take risks
have propelled him from his start as a
production assistant to his current status
as a chameleon able to color himself in
the skin required by the role at hand.
“Like a lot of actors, I enjoy playing characters
who challenge me, and that means
characters who are different from myself.
I seem to gravitate to those who challenge
the audience to sympathize with them.”
Mapother is a thinking-man’s actor. He brings
depth to the roles he plays. He relishes in
the questions raised by his characters, by the
subtleties he can add to the performance.
He also doesn’t resent being somewhat
typecast into darker roles, as was the case
on Lost and in In The Bedroom.
“The industry, to a degree, wants to put
me in roles like that because I’ve proven I
can do them. That’s not uncommon partly
because human beings tend to rely on
categorizing one another, and partly because
film-making is a risky venture – creatively,
financially – and the industry usually takes
every opportunity to reduce the number of
variables in the equation.”
William
Mapother:
Fortune favors
the prepared
Needless to say, Mapother is doing all he
can to reduce the myriad of variables which
can stand between a working actor and
long-term success in a fickle industry.
“Like a lot of people in the creative fields,
work for actors cycles up and down. You
heap your plate with potential projects
because the slow cycles are very difficult to
bear, not only financially but emotionally. I
would far rather be swamped and stressed
than bored.”
Mapother will continue to heap his plate
with projects all the while knowing there is
a certain element of chance to Hollywood
success. But, at the end of the day, he says,
“Fortune favors the prepared.”
“One of the most thrilling and terrifying parts
about the business is its unpredictability.
Opportunities can fall right in your lap. It is
no surprise, however, that they seem to do
that more often when you have prepared
for them.”
Tigers Take Back
Shillelagh Cup
On September 27, alumni golfers from
St. X took back the Shillelagh Cup in a close
battle with alumni from Trinity. Playing for
the first time at Audubon Country Club
and needing 12 1/2 points for the win, the
Tigers squeezed out a 13 to 11 victory. The
match was a combination of 12 two-ball
matches and 12 four-ball matches, based
on the Ryder Cup format. First time captains
Leland Hulbert ’93 and Wes Orr ’97
helped Saint Xavier take a lead in the series
with 5 victories to 4 for Trinity with 2 ties.
