Deener has
Audience of
Sports Fans
Since his college days, Drew Deener ’91 has
been quenching the thirst of Kentuckiana
sports fans with talk and information about
their favorite teams. He is a self-proclaimed
sports fanatic.
While at Transylvania University, Drew
petitioned the administration and was
allowed to broadcast the home basketball
games on the school radio station – a one
watt juggernaut. Although a “one-man flyby-the-seat-of-your-pants
operation,” it was
a great learning experience. He was hooked.
Drew began his career in Hazard, Ky., as a
TV sports anchor. Soon he was in Lexington
again, where he was sports anchor and
reporter for WKYT-TV for eleven years. Drew
also worked for the UK Football TV Network
as a sideline reporter. On radio, he hosted
sports talk shows on ESPN Radio 1300 and
WVLK-AM 590, served as color analyst for the
Kentucky Thoroughblades hockey team, and
was announcer for UK baseball for four years.
In 2008, Drew moved back to Louisville.
He was paired with John L. Smith to host
a morning sports show “The Early Birds”
on WKRD-AM 790. It was an immediate
success. John L. has moved on, but Drew
remains, and the show’s popularity has
soared. He also hosts “Cardinal Insider”
on WKRD, “Cardinal Courtside,” and UofL
Football/Basketball play-by-play on WHAS-TV.
While sometimes controversial, he is “not a
shock jock.” He strives “to be entertaining,
while being fair and informative.”
A Global Voice
What started as a 3-month gig doing technical
writing has turned into a 19-year career for
Mike Mangeot ’84. As Public Relations
Manager for UPS Airlines, Mike is the face and
voice of the world’s largest package carrier.
In fact, Mike got connected to UPS by another
St. X grad, Mike Clark ’71. During his tenure,
he has concentrated on communicating the
company’s purpose – global commerce that
improves humanity. Three years ago he
moved into the public relations arena for
Louisville-based UPS Airlines. Mike’s expertise
recently helped guide UPS through its greatest
tragedy, the crash of one of its jets and
death of two crew members.
Though his work is global in nature (when
reached for this article, he took the call
while standing atop a mountain in Alaska),
Mike’s roots remain in Louisville. That sense
of connectivity keeps him bonded to UPS, as
well as St. X. As a professional communicator,
he is grateful for the writing skills he learned
from Rena Boyd, as well as the critical thinking
ability fostered by Brother Julius Mahoney
and Brother James McCarthy.
Trio of
’77 Grads
Exemplifies
St. X Mafia
Tony Fink, Charlie Hagerty, and Ed
Miller were mutual classmates and good
friends while at St. X. Tony and Charlie
played football – Tony for two years and
Charlie all four. Ed seemed to get more
kicks playing soccer for the Tigers.
They never dreamed to what extent they
would be involved in the burgeoning
computer world, or that they would
eventually be leading one of the region’s
top IT consulting firms.
After graduating from St. X in 1977,
Tony and Ed attended Bellarmine and
Charlie marched on to UK. Throughout
college, all kept in contact.
In 1996, Charlie, after 20 years in the
computer industry, started New Age

Technologies. Tony joined the firm in 1998
as Charlie’s partner and COO. In January of
2004, Ed was approached to serve as CFO.
All three were like tigers burning the
midnight oil…
The foundation was now in place and
together the three proceeded forward
with alacrity. The company provides
comprehensive information technology
consulting services. New Age Technologies
is known for their capabilities in providing
IT staffing and virtualization services to
all industries. During the past year, New
Age Technologies has earned a national
reputation with their work in virtualizing
environments supporting hospitals’
electronic medical records systems.
Virtualization can save companies on capital
and energy costs by consolidating multiple
server hardware platforms onto one server.
New Age Technologies does about 70% of
its volume in staffing solutions and 30%
in consulting. Healthcare IT consulting is
expected to increase dramatically.
The trio attributes much of their success to
the strong groundwork and the relationships
they built while at St. X. From their origins,
all of their vendors are from the St. X Mafia
– “network.” Today, the men continue to
utilize their St. X network to keep their
business growing. Tony expressed, “when
you have the opportunity to build your
network of trusted advisors, why wouldn’t
you choose a St. X grad?” The three feel
very strongly that the values and principles
taught to them at St. X follow their fellow
grads as they go into the workplace. Even
if you’re working with grads from different
eras and classes than yours, they feel the
St. X brotherhood sets the common ground
in which to conduct business.
1977 graduates Charlie Hagerty, Tony Fink, and Ed Miller lead New Age Technologies.
The following grads make up New Age
Technologies’ St. X. Mafia; Al Burke ’68 –
401K program; Bill Roby ’65 – insurance
services; Greg Cecil ’77 – accounting;
Steve Heeb ’77 – HR support; Denis
Noltemeyer ’77 and Kenny Minogue ’77
– printing; Mark Buehner ’78 – heating
& air; Bill Kelly ’47 – office supplies and
furniture; Kevin Smith ’71 – legal advice;
Bob Thieman ’76 – legal advice; Dan
Kauffmann ’77 – office remodeling; Keith
Schnell ’77 – roofing; David Heintzman
’77 – banking; John Simms ’71 – banking;
and Tom Clines ’73 – marketing/mailings.
This network of St. X alumni has provided
the support to allow New Age to flourish to
this point and will continue to be the trusted
advisors that they look to as they continue
their growth.
New Event
Sets Record
Attendance
Over 600 Saint Xavier alumni, parents, and
friends were on hand to celebrate Saint
Xavier’s inaugural event Legacy…A Gala
of Giving, which was held on Saturday,
February 26. The Gala was created to
recognize donors who are St. Francis Xavier
Society members, yet also provide an
opportunity for the St. X community to
socialize and support our efforts to fund
tuition assistance for St. X families. In addition
to cocktails and dinner, nearly 200 items
were available for bidding at our silent auction.
The highlights of the evening included the
presentation of the St. Francis Xavier Award
to Brother James Kelly, C.F.X., Honorary
’01, and the $40,000 grand prize drawing.
The Gala was a true success, exceeding
attendance and fundraising expectations.
In recognition of his dedication to the
many young men of Saint Xavier High
School, Brother James Kelly was named the
recipient of the St. Francis Xavier award,
which recognizes an individual who, in the
spirit of St. Francis Xavier, dedicates him or
herself to the betterment of life by endorsing
an educational process that integrates the
rigors of academic excellence with the
light and guidance of Divine faith. Brother
James served as President at Saint Xavier
High School from 1993 until 2001. He is
currently the President and Chief Executive
Officer of Mount Saint Joseph High School in
Baltimore, Maryland. He is also the author of
two books, Respecting the Man the Boy Will
Become and Building Men Who Matter.
The evening was capped off by the drawing
for the $40,000 grand prize. Gerry ’59 and
Mary Ann Hubbs were the lucky recipients
drawn from 400 chances. They are the
parents of three St. X alumni, David ’85,
Tom ’87, and Mark ’88 and grandparents
of Andrew ’13. An earlier drawing for
purchasers of raffle tickets by December 31
was held on January 1. This $1,000 prizewinner
was Tim Wissing ’93.
Saint Xavier would like to thank the many
volunteers who were instrumental in making
the Gala possible, including dozens that
worked in the areas of silent auction, check-in
and check-out, including students that
served as greeters. The Steering Committee,
Artists Receive
National
Awards
Each year Saint Xavier’s talented artists
submit their work for judging in Regional
Scholastic Competition. Over a dozen
students tallied awards in the areas of
writing, painting, sculpture, drawing,
ceramics and glass, photography, digital
art, and film and animation. Three of the
students, Justin Allard, Chip Raque, and
Ian Timothy won a total of five Gold Keys,
the highest distinction. All Gold Key winners
automatically had their winning work
entered into national competition. Saint
Xavier is pleased to announce that Justin
Allard and Ian Timothy were award winners
in the National Scholastic Competition. Ian,
a sophomore, won a Gold Key for Film and
Animation, while Justin, a senior, won a
Silver Key for his creative writing portfolio.
Congratulations to these students.
Regional Gold Key winners were: Ian Timothy, Chip Raque, and Justin Allard. Ian and Justin won awards
at the national competition, as well.
Dan Ratterman Sam Ratterman
Basketball
Throughout the history of Tiger basketball,
there have been numerous examples of
cousins who, as classmates, played important
roles for the team during their senior years.
As the 2011 team made its way into the
state’s top twenty rankings, Dan and Sam
Ratterman were playing key roles. After
playing in a reserve role last year, Dan started
all 27 games for the Tigers this season. The
primary inside scoring threat, he shot nearly
60% from the field and finished the season
as the team’s leading rebounder and secondleading
scorer. Dan’s cousin Sam took a
slightly different path toward becoming a team
co-captain in 2011. While most of his
experience during the 2010 season was
earned as a leader of the Tiger JV team,
his valuable court time helped him blossom
into a team leader during his senior year.
While playing several positions and starting
23 games, Sam was always counted on
to defend the opponents’ top perimeter
player. His defensive stats were impressive,
and he led the team in charges taken while
also providing the team with steady play
at the offensive end of the court. “Their
selfless, team-first approach was important
to their development as individual players,”
said Coach Kevin Klein ’95,“ but more
importantly it was vital to the team’s success
and a great example to the younger players
in the program.”
Hockey
While the Saint Xavier Hockey program has
had its share of All-State performers over the
past decade, the 2011 squad includes a first
for the Tigers and for the entire Kentucky
High School Hockey League. Senior Alex
Senn (#4) and sophomore Hunter Senn
(#11) became the first pair of brothers to
ever be named to the KHSHL first team
All-State in the same season! This marks
the fourth consecutive first-team selection
for Alex, a three-time St. X captain and twotime
KHSHL scoring leader who finished the
season with 27 goals and 18 assists. Hunter
earned All-State recognition for the first time
in a season during which he scored 11 goals
in addition to contributing 15 assists. Coach
Randy Boehme said of Alex and Hunter, the
forwards on the Tiger first line throughout
the year, “It has been a privilege for us to
have had the opportunity to coach such
gifted athletes and true gentlemen. They
always demonstrate a significant work ethic
and consistently play the game with passion,
character, and integrity.”

Garrett Stephens, Bo Blythe, Drew Wagner, and Khalid Aldaboos made up the record-setting relay team.
Swimming
The Tiger Swimming and Diving team
captured its 23rd consecutive state title on
February 26 at the University of Louisville’s
Ralph Wright Natatorium, capping off an
incredible undefeated season. Of the
many memorable performances turned in
throughout the year, the 200 Yard Freestyle
Relay team created its own highlight reel
of accomplishments. The team set two pool
records in the event while winning races at
Jeffersonville High School and at St. X in the
Hubbuch Natatorium. At the KHSAA state
meet, the Tiger squad of sophomore
Garrett Stephens and seniors Khalid
Aldaboos, co-captain Drew Wagner,
and Bo Blythe bettered the state record
in a preliminary heat on Friday and then
shattered it in the finals with an incredible
time of 1:23.87. This time is nearly two full
seconds faster than the old state mark and is
the second fastest reported high school time
in the nation this year. “ It was a great
performance,” said Coach Todd Larkin,
“but even more impressive is the leadership
that these guys displayed for our team
throughout the year.” With the victory,
St. X now holds the record in all three
KHSAA state meet relay events.
John Lampe Justin Lampe
Wrestling
The Tiger wrestling team’s 5th place finish at
the 2011 KHSAA wrestling championships
provided more evidence of the program’s
steady improvement in its drive to return to
the form that last captured a team title in
2001. For the past three years, John Lampe
has proven himself as one of the best
individual performers in the history of the
St. X wrestling program. After earning a 4th
place finish at 135 pounds as a sophomore
in 2009, John became just the third St. X
wrestler to earn multiple state titles when he
captured the individual state championship
at 160 pounds in both 2010 and 2011.
In addition, he became the first All-American
wrestler in the history of the program and
finished his senior campaign with a record of
47-0. Making his senior season even more
special was the experience of watching his
brother, Justin Lampe, become only the
second Tiger wrestler ever to place at the state
tournament during his freshman year. Justin,
a two-time state middle school champion,
completed his first season with a record of
38-11 and earned the 5th place medal at the
state tournament, knocking off the state’s
top-ranked wrestler at 112 pounds along the
way. Two of the hardest workers on the team,
both John and Justin were outstanding team
leaders. “Justin is just like John,” said Coach
Jim Kraeszig, “only meaner.”
When you sit across the desk
from Joe Steier, you hear him
describing one thing, but you
see his mind working on five or six other
burning ideas. As we visited in his office
in early March, I was wondering truly if
smoke would start to emerge from his ears
as he hit high gear for the day. Steier is
President and CEO of Signature Healthcare
in Louisville, Ky. (as of August 2010). With
significant time spent evaluating a move to
Tennessee or Kentucky while contemplating
staying in Florida, Signature’s board finally
chose Louisville because of the presence of
a large “senior care” footprint in our region.
Senior care as an industry is getting larger
every year as baby boomers age and need
such services. Signature aspires to “raise
the bar for nursing home care” according
to Steier. He sees the current public health
system as holding great value and believes
it can be improved once we create an
environment between government and the
private sector open to the changes needed.
Steier says “the three pillars of our company
(intrapreneurship, learning and spirituality)”
have fostered a work environment that
leads to superb care at Signature’s 75
nursing homes.
Signature takes a unique approach to its
employee base, including aggressive programs
to continue the education of its employees
from GED to doctoral studies. Steier himself
holds two master’s degrees from the University
of Miami and Penn, a doctorate (Ed.D.) from
Penn and a CPA license. Additionally, Steier
has subscribed to spirituality in the workplace
on all levels. Having a faith-based
approach to everything from their hiring
practices to a compassion fund for employees
facing illness or death of a loved one allows
for the team to really grow as a spiritual
family. Steier’s passion for this started when
he and his wife, Sony, faced serious illness
issues with their son Luke.
These strategies, Steier is quick to point out,
lead to better candidates for future positions,
a stronger retention rate for current employees
and, of course, employees with a unique
passion to make a Signature home the best
it can be. The outcome is greater efficiency
and a solid bottom line leading to significant
growth since Signature began just 3½
years ago.
Steier’s roots are very much centered in
Kentucky. He worked as a bus boy for
Bearno’s Pizza and spent 10 years saving
every extra penny to buy the local pizza
favorite with two other St. X graduates.
He remains a partner today – a way to stay
connected to his community while living
in Florida. He enjoys serving as a business
partner and mentor to the other Bearno’s
owners. Now that he is back, he hopes to
see greater success with the 15-store chain.
Steier experienced what he termed the
“St. X Delta” when considering Louisville
for his new corporate headquarters. He was
reminded of how many X-men were in positions
of leadership in our region when many
offered assistance and sought to provide
services that the new arrival would need
immediately. The ability to utilize what we
on campus call “The X-Factor” gave Steier a
unique confidence that he could expect the
best from other alumni. What Steier found
Joe Steier ’84:
The Idea Master

was “a bond that began as students on the
campus transferred to a better advantage”
in the daily business transactions.
The ideas come often for Steier, one being
that a major advantage for the move to
Kentucky was the unique public health
incubator created by local healthcare players,
including the University of Louisville. Steier
and other local and national investors could
foster his constant innovative culture by
cultivating these unique business ideas with
initial funding already in place. Steier’s St. X
classmate John Reinhart has taken the lead
of this program and enjoys working with
Joe on such a fulfilling set of opportunities.
Steier’s return to Louisville has seen him
become involved with his new parish,
St. Patrick’s, where he and his wife attend
with their four children, Joseph, Jackie,
Luke, and Ava. To maintain his passion for
the senior care world, he commits to two
“date nights” per week and enjoys the
many activities his children participate in
over the weekends.
Dipped in
Green and Gold
Who would think that St. X alumni like to
get together for an evening of camaraderie?
Well, Rob Samuels ’92 and the folks at
Maker’s Mark would. That is why over 150
alumni showed up for the St. X Business and
Professional Association sold-out gathering
on April 19 at Audubon Country Club.
Enticed by bourbon-inspired appetizers, a
mint julep demonstration, and the chance
to bid on a select number of Maker’s Mark
bottles hand-dipped in green and gold wax,
the Tiger faithful heard Rob, Chief Operating
Tradition
Perhaps the most popular alumni event in
the St. X calendar is the annual Alumni Golf
Outing. Each year, the event draws over 300
alumni golfers who enjoy a round of golf
at one of the region’s finest courses. There
is friendly competition, good food, and the
chance to enjoy a day with friends. This year
is no different as Audubon and Hurstbourne
properly enjoy good bourbon. Additionally,
XBPA happenings like this offer alumni
the chance to network, both socially and
professionally. Each guest left the event
wiser to the Kentucky bourbon traditions and
with a personalized bottle of Maker’s Mark
in hand.
Country Clubs will host the outing, set for
Monday, July 25. There is a morning and
afternoon round offered at Audubon and
an afternoon round at Hurstbourne.
All alumni are invited to attend, but
spots are limited and normally fill quickly.
Registration will open in late May, so watch
your mailbox and email for an invitation.
Additionally, there is an opportunity to
advertise your business by becoming a
sponsor, so do not miss the opportunity
to see and be seen by fellow Tigers.
Alumni Tigers
Participate
in Record
Phonathon
More than 2,400 Tiger alumni answered
the call during the 25th annual Alumni
Phonathon, and, thanks to them, the school
has commitments to send $212,767 to the
tuition assistance fund for students who are
currently enrolled at St. X. This is a record
amount of dollars, beating the 2008 total by
more than $13,000. This success would not
have been possible without 412 volunteer
callers during the month of March, including
73 current students. This is our largest number
of volunteers in the history of the Alumni
Phonathon. More than a dozen classes
excelled in recruiting volunteers for this
important event. The classes of 1952, 1953,
1955, 1957, 1958, 1960, 1963, 1964, 1965,
1971, 1972, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1993, and
2003 all had a minimum of eight callers.
For the second year in a row, the class of
1982 had the highest participation with 19
callers! Be sure to watch for the summer
issue of The Tiger to see a complete listing of
alumni callers in the Class Notes section.
Our Class has met annually for over 40 years for food,
drinks, games, and camaraderie. At our 50th, I suggested
we establish our X’43 Endowment of $50,000, and you
all generously and immediately responded with just over
that goal. In the ensuing years, many needy students have
received funds for their tuition from the interest of our
Endowment, and they have written their heartfelt thanks
to our Class. Through later bequests, the total has risen to
over $83,000. I have now raised our target to a $100,000
Endowment, and I know we can make it! Please remember
our X’43 Endowment Fund in your generosity now or in
your will.
With Jim Huter’s recent passing, we now have 53
members still in this Vale of Tears and there are over 150
classmates in that Big Reunion In The Sky! Please remember
to attend the 50-Year Club celebration on June 10 and
let’s get together there for our annual reunions. By the
way, a couple dozen guys from St. X come to lunch at
the Knights of Columbus on River Road on the third
Wednesday of each month. Let’s make the scene(s) and
start a table of X’43ers.
