Artists Receive National Awards Each year Saint Xavier’s talented artists submit their work for judging in Regional Scholastic Competition. Over a dozen students tallied awards in the areas of writing, painting, sculpture, drawing, ceramics and glass, photography, digital art, and film and animation. Three of the students, Justin Allard, Chip Raque, and Ian Timothy won a total of five Gold Keys, the highest distinction. All Gold Key winners automatically had their winning work entered into national competition. Saint Xavier is pleased to announce that Justin Allard and Ian Timothy were award winners in the National Scholastic Competition. Ian, a sophomore, won a Gold Key for Film and Animation, while Justin, a senior, won a Silver Key for his creative writing portfolio. Congratulations to these students. Regional Gold Key winners were: Ian Timothy, Chip Raque, and Justin Allard. Ian and Justin won awards at the national competition, as well. Alumnus Named School Administrator Earlier this year, Saint Xavier announced that Tony Scheler was appointed to the position of Assistant Principal for Student Life, Grades 9 and 10. This appointment as Dean of Students is effective with the 2011-2012 academic year. Dr. Perry Sangalli described Scheler as “very much in touch with student needs, very approachable and communicates well with students, parents and colleagues.” He is a 1983 St. X graduate and has been a faculty member in our science department since 1988. He holds a master’s degree from the University of Louisville and has completed additional graduate studies to earn Rank I and Professional Certifications or licenses to teach secondary biology and chemistry. Scheler has served as assistant wrestling coach and as a coach/moderator for the academic teams. Currently, he assists with both the intramural program and the Student Activities Council. 6 Dan Ratterman Sam Ratterman Basketball Throughout the history of Tiger basketball, there have been numerous examples of cousins who, as classmates, played important roles for the team during their senior years. As the 2011 team made its way into the state’s top twenty rankings, Dan and Sam Ratterman were playing key roles. After playing in a reserve role last year, Dan started all 27 games for the Tigers this season. The primary inside scoring threat, he shot nearly 60% from the field and finished the season as the team’s leading rebounder and secondleading scorer. Dan’s cousin Sam took a slightly different path toward becoming a team co-captain in 2011. While most of his experience during the 2010 season was earned as a leader of the Tiger JV team, his valuable court time helped him blossom into a team leader during his senior year. While playing several positions and starting 23 games, Sam was always counted on to defend the opponents’ top perimeter player. His defensive stats were impressive, and he led the team in charges taken while also providing the team with steady play at the offensive end of the court. “Their selfless, team-first approach was important to their development as individual players,” said Coach Kevin Klein ’95,“ but more importantly it was vital to the team’s success and a great example to the younger players in the program.” Hockey While the Saint Xavier Hockey program has had its share of All-State performers over the past decade, the 2011 squad includes a first for the Tigers and for the entire Kentucky High School Hockey League. Senior Alex Senn (#4) and sophomore Hunter Senn (#11) became the first pair of brothers to ever be named to the KHSHL first team All-State in the same season! This marks the fourth consecutive first-team selection for Alex, a three-time St. X captain and twotime KHSHL scoring leader who finished the season with 27 goals and 18 assists. Hunter earned All-State recognition for the first time in a season during which he scored 11 goals in addition to contributing 15 assists. Coach Randy Boehme said of Alex and Hunter, the forwards on the Tiger first line throughout the year, “It has been a privilege for us to have had the opportunity to coach such gifted athletes and true gentlemen. They always demonstrate a significant work ethic and consistently play the game with passion, character, and integrity.”
