Golf Michael Ising is an outstanding example of a Saint Xavier student athlete. A four-year letterman and member of two state championship teams in golf, and a three-year starter for the Tiger varsity basketball team, Michael has still managed to maintain a 4.9 GPA and enter his senior year ranked 7th in the Class of 2011! This fall he represented St. X as one of five players at the State Golf Tournament where the team brought home the State Runner-Up trophy. His lowest two-day score for the golf team this year was 142, and he ended the year with a stroke average of 77. An active member of the Student Activities Council, Michael participates in the student tutoring program, volunteers at a nursing home and St. Joe’s Children’s Home during the summer, and recently completed the missionary trip to Belize where he helped build a home for a needy family. Fall Athletics It was a season of recovery for the Saint and golf teams had outstanding seasons, Xavier athletic program that made history each placing second in the State. Facing a last fall capturing four KHSAA titles in foot- tough schedule, the soccer team compiled ball, soccer, golf, and cross country. A young a 16-2-2 regular season record, but lost to football team finished the regular season eventual state champion, Collegiate, in the 8-2, but lost the battle against Trinity in the third round of the playoffs. The cross country fourth round of postseason play. Soccer Oliver Brown is a four-year letterman for the soccer team and an All-State selection in one of the toughest spots on the field. During his career in the goal for the Tigers, he has made numerous incredible plays in the net while helping the team to an amazing 89-6-5 record that included three state championships. Oliver and his fellow goal-keepers combined for an unbelievable total of sixty shutouts during this recordsetting run. Head Coach Andy Schulten on his All-State keeper: “Oliver is a tremendous asset to this team. He allows us to play much more aggressively because we have so much confidence in his ability as a keeper. 8 The journey from a Midwestern city like Louisville to Hollywood stardom is apt to be difficult, often ending in disappointment if the goal is glitzy parties and Oscar nominations. But the journey from that same Midwestern city to a career as an actor, director, screenwriter, and entrepreneur is one where hard work and preparation is rewarded by other successes, like those celebrated by William Mapother ’83. Mapother has embarked on an arduous journey from his beginnings in Louisville to a Hollywood career long on critical acclaim while short on the celebrity trappings of celluloid success. You will not find Mapother on the cover of a tabloid in the checkout aisle. You will find him in his office, working. You will not see Mapother self-promoting on reality TV. You will see him auditioning, writing, and learning more about all aspects of the industry. In reality, you may not see Mapother at all – that’s the goal of any great actor. He becomes his roles. He disappears into the character. Mapother’s performance as Ethan Rom on the recently concluded hit TV show Lost may have gained him his broadest exposure, but his powerful and thought-provoking turn as Marisa Tomei’s estranged husband in the Oscar-nominated In the Bedroom gained him his most critical acclaim. While those two roles have emerged as weigh stations on what continues to be a successful career, they are certainly not what defines Mapother. He shies away from the cliché moniker of Renaissance Man, but the body of work Mapother has amassed over his two decades in the industry is not limited to any one particular genre, medium or discipline. He has acted for television and on the big screen and is writing and producing an independent film. He has written, directed, and performed on the stage (including a stint locally in a 2008 Actor’s Theatre production of Glengarry Glen Ross). He has served on the board of the Screen Actors Guild, does voice work in narration, animation, and video games, and co-founded a film marketing, data, and financing company. William notes, “Working is like exercise, in that different types work different muscles. It’s fun and healthy to keep them as active as possible.” In true character actor form, Mapother has managed to carve his own niche in the industry. His insistence on hard work, fierce preparation and a willingness to take risks have propelled him from his start as a production assistant to his current status as a chameleon able to color himself in the skin required by the role at hand. “Like a lot of actors, I enjoy playing characters who challenge me, and that means characters who are different from myself. I seem to gravitate to those who challenge the audience to sympathize with them.” Mapother is a thinking-man’s actor. He brings depth to the roles he plays. He relishes in the questions raised by his characters, by the subtleties he can add to the performance. He also doesn’t resent being somewhat typecast into darker roles, as was the case on Lost and in In The Bedroom. “The industry, to a degree, wants to put me in roles like that because I’ve proven I can do them. That’s not uncommon partly because human beings tend to rely on categorizing one another, and partly because film-making is a risky venture – creatively, financially – and the industry usually takes every opportunity to reduce the number of variables in the equation.” William Mapother: Fortune favors the prepared
