Needless to say, Mapother is doing all he can to reduce the myriad of variables which can stand between a working actor and long-term success in a fickle industry. “Like a lot of people in the creative fields, work for actors cycles up and down. You heap your plate with potential projects because the slow cycles are very difficult to bear, not only financially but emotionally. I would far rather be swamped and stressed than bored.” Mapother will continue to heap his plate with projects all the while knowing there is a certain element of chance to Hollywood success. But, at the end of the day, he says, “Fortune favors the prepared.” “One of the most thrilling and terrifying parts about the business is its unpredictability. Opportunities can fall right in your lap. These accomplished alumni are a credit to their profession, family, and to Saint Xavier High School. Tigers Take Back Shillelagh Cup On September 27, alumni golfers from St. X took back the Shillelagh Cup in a close battle with alumni from Trinity. Playing for the first time at Audubon Country Club and needing 12 1/2 points for the win, the Tigers squeezed out a 13 to 11 victory. The match was a combination of 12 two-ball matches and 12 four-ball matches, based on the Ryder Cup format. First time captains Leland Hulbert ’93 and Wes Orr ’97 helped Saint Xavier take a lead in the series with 5 victories to 4 for Trinity with 2 ties. Tigers In California Perry Sangalli, President, and Mike Littell, Vice President for Advancement, visited California in October and hosted two alumni receptions – one at the Sunset Tower Hotel in Los Angeles and the other at the Wayfare Tavern in San Francisco. How about a cruise on the Mediterranean in 2011? The Saint Xavier Alumni Association, in conjunction with Lou Conkling ‘72 of Knights Travel, have put together a 10-night cruise on Holland America’s Noordam, sailing June 20 from Civitavecchia (Rome) to such wonderful ports as Livorno, Italy (Florence and Pisa), Monte Carlo, an overnight in Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, La Goulette (Tunisia), Palermo Sicily, and Naples, with a return to Rome. Prices are $1,499 for an inside cabin and $2,099 for a balcony. Prices are per person, based upon double occupancy, port charges included. Airfare and taxes are additional.
