Canine Companion November 13 was a bittersweet day for Marty Fischer, ’76, and wife Cathy. That’s the day their beloved Maureen, a six-month-old yellow Labrador retriever, left the family home in Orlando, Fla., for a final 6–12 months of training in a very unique service. That special puppy came to the Fischer’s at the very young age of 8 weeks and had been their constant companion for 16 weeks. If Maureen gets through that next stage of training, she will be transferred to one of four special assignments in which she will assist and care for special needs individuals, ranging from children undergoing chemotherapy, to nursing home residents, to people confined to wheelchairs. She might even provide ears to a deaf person. Six years ago, the “puppy raiser” Fisher’s, through Cathy’s boss at Universal Studios, attended “Tails and Tales Gala,” where they were introduced to Canine Companions for Independence, a nonprofit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. Maureen is the third service animal trained by the Fischer’s, who, after witnessing the appearance of an autistic child at the Gala, decided that they would commit to a puppy and the time and financial responsibilities that go with the CCI program. The Fischer’s share their passion for the program by interviewing potential “puppy raisers” in the Orlando area. Of the last six interviewees, five are now raising and training puppies, most of which are pure-bred Labs. By being Canine Companions, Marty and Cathy live out, in a unique way, a principle of a St. X education: the call to serve others in need. It has been said that a dog is “man’s best friend.” Now, more than ever, Marty Fischer understands this. By Bill Cooper ’57 Links to Success When Mark Kirchdorfer ’91 was at St. X, his dream was to become a professional golfer and play at the top 100 golf courses in the country. Almost 20 years later, he can say that he’s well on his way to achieving at least half of that dream. Growing up in a family of golfers enabled Mark to develop his skills before going on to star on the golf teams at St. X and the University of Dayton. To date, he has played 20 of the top 100 courses in the U.S. and plans to continue travelling the country with his clubs until he reaches the century mark. When he’s not playing golf, Mark serves as Chief Operating Officer of ISCO Industries. Founded in 1962 by his father as an irrigation supply company, the company is now a manufacturer and distributor of specialized irrigation piping to 23 countries around the world. For Mark, the most rewarding part of his job is making a positive impact on the lives of others by providing jobs for their 300 employees. Because of the global nature of the business and current economic conditions, finding quality, passionate people is a challenge, but one that Mark is excited about overcoming. Helping others doesn’t stop in the workplace for Mark. He is a board member of and leads an annual golf outing for Nativity Academy, a private, Catholic middle school in Louisville that is co-sponsored by the Xaverian Brothers. Students at Nativity come from families facing economic challenges who are afforded extensive tuition assistance, both to attend Nativity, and, hopefully, a local, Catholic high school. This reminds Mark of his days at St. X when he got to know classmates from diverse economic and educational backgrounds. 4 Legacy…A Gala of Giving February 26, 2011 Brand new to the Saint Xavier community is Legacy...A Gala of Giving. This event combines the best of two previously held events: the St. Francis Xavier Society dinner and Xtravaganza. The event will recognize our most cherished benefactor group, the St. Francis Xavier Society, provide better opportunities for our donors to get to know our students, and provide some unique social gathering time for our parent and alumni communities. Br. James Kelly, C.F.X. Honorary ’01 will be presented the St. Francis Xavier Award and a current senior will provide testimony to the impact of tuition assistance. Earl ’82 and Holly Winebrenner, parents of a junior, are chairing the planning committee. The Legacy Gala offers several ways for alumni, parents and friends to stay connected to St. X and add support to our efforts to fund tuition assistance for Saint Xavier families. Here are ways to get involved: • Join the St. Francis Xavier Society and receive complimentary seating at the event. • Purchase a $250 reservation for a couple to attend the event, which will offer a gourmet meal, including cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, and the opportunity to participate in the auction. • Provide a gift for the Gala’s Auction Wall – an area with 180 items, including trips, one-of-a-kind items, and special St. X packages with game tickets and Suite use. • Purchase a $250 raffle ticket. Be one of 400 tickets on a chance to win the $40,000 grand prize. Legacy...A Gala of Giving is scheduled for Saturday, February 26, 2011. Br. James Kelly to Receive St. Francis Xavier Award Saint Xavier’s first President, Brother James M. Kelly, C.F.X., Honorary ’01, will be presented this year’s St. Francis Xavier Award at Legacy…A Gala of Giving. Br. James served at St. X from 1993-2001 and is now President at Mount St. Joseph High School in Baltimore. The prestigious St. Francis Xavier Award recognizes an individual who, in the spirit of St. Francis Xavier, dedicates him or herself to the betterment of life by endorsing an educational process that integrates the rigors of academic excellence with the light and guidance of Divine faith. Also of note, Br. James has penned a new book – Building Men Who Matter: On the Marvel and Mystery of Teenage Boys. Books can be purchased in the St. X Campus Store or online at www.saintx.com/store.
