Class Notes Class of 1936 Emmett Ratterman celebrated his 92nd birthday surrounded by his family (Tony ’63, Jim ’67, and Mark ’76) and four generations of nieces and nephews on June 5. Class of 1941 Class Agents: Charley Riley (502) 425-2524 and Walter Thomas (502) 425-5649 Thirteen faithful ’41 grads enjoyed the 50-Year Club Reunion on June 11. Frank Chawk, another faithful for ALL past 50 Club Reunions, had a stroke and was in the Jefferson Manor Rehab, but he is now home. Tom McBride, another faithful attendee, arrived in good spirits, having been in hospitals and rehabs since October ’09. A note of “Love” was signed by all grads to Fr. Bowling at De Nobill College, Ramwadi, Pune, in India. We look for his return at our 70th reunion in 2011. 75 grads are still “tickin’ & kickin’.” Co-Class Agent Walter Thomas’ wife, Dorothy Whittle Thomas, died October 22. She was buried at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central, Radcliff, Ky. They were married 67 years. Walter is a survivor of WWII POW Camp in Germany. Jean and Charles Riley (65th), along with Mary and Paul Hubbuch (60th), renewed their wedding vows during “A Celebration of Marriage” in October at the Cathedral of the Assumption, with Archbishop Kurtz as the celebrant. Charles Beam was posthumously inducted into the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame in September. Charles worked at several distilleries and was widely known as a “Master” of distillers before the term was widely used. Class of 1949 Class Agent: Joe Maupin (502) 458-4670 On September 11, John O’Regan was inducted into Bellarmine University’s Scarlet and Silver Society for his work as Pioneer Class of ’54 Archivist, scorekeeper for 33 years, and retired railroad executive. Class of 1955 Class Agents: Howard Meyer (502) 458-5820 and Bob Weihe (502) 459-6397 Thirty-three classmates attended the 50-Year Club Dinner to celebrate our 55-year reunion. Several golfers played in a reunion golf scramble at Woodhaven Country Club. Most “shot their age,” but some did a little better on the back nine. Later, several classmates joined them for a social hour following golf. Tom Coomes passed away February 20 and Jim Mullaney passed away June 20. They were fun-loving guys and proud members of the Class of ’55. Our prayers and sympathy are extended to their families. Cliff Bisig retired after several years as regional sales manager of the Nashua Company in Omaha, but will continue to act as a consultant for the company. He and his wife, Judy live in the Omaha, Nebraska area. Rhea Shaw is an active investor in Papa John’s restaurants and also keeps busy on the golf course. He and his wife Marguerite live in Boca Raton, Florida. Jerry “Dutch” Bishop, Tony Cissell, and Jim Holtgrave all retired from South Central Bell after many years with the company and live in the Louisville area. Dick Blocker worked for eight years as a coach and teacher at local area high schools (including St. X). He then retired after 30 years in the electrical supply business. Dick lives in the Hikes Point area. Gene Block moved back to Louisville several years ago from Texas after a long career with the Texaco Company. Gene, and his wife, Gayle live in the Hurstbourne Lane area. Class of 1956 Class Agent: Alan Dries (502) 875-0416 Joyce and John (Tommy) Zanone celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 4. They have four children and seven grandchildren. Their message: “the second 25 years are the best.” Class of 1957 Class Agent: Bill Cooper (502) 895-1323 Sylvia and Michael O’Daniel have escaped Los Angeles after 35 years and moved to El Cerrito, Cal. Their son and daughter, both of whom were married in 2009, live in the area, and “Hap” and Sylvia welcomed their first grandchild in November. Bob Donnelly passed away October 9. Bill Cooper visited Bob a few days before his death and took him a short compilation of personal video messages from some of his classmates. The Breakfast Boys of ’57 continue to meet once a month. Class of 1959 Class Agent: Doug Ganote (502) 648-0851 Dave De Spain has successfully recovered from a heart attack. Bill Lyons is working at the U.S. Census Bureau and is still selling cars. John Gatton lost 20 pounds and works every day at Meijer. Andy Latkovski has fully recovered from a near-fatal car accident. Bob Lavely is still an active dentist in Louisville. Bill Nold and Ted Steier both hit a hole-in-one on the same course, on the same day. Gerry Peake celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary. We’re still seeking funds for the Class of ’59 Endowment. Class of 1962 Class Agent: Bill Wiegandt (502) 244-4850 Mike Silliman† is included in a display inside the KFC Yum! Center in downtown Louisville. It features famous Kentucky athletes. Class of 1964 Class Agent: Don Meyer (502) 491-2704 Tom Mirus moved to Nashville, following his wife who took a new job there in 2009. He spends his time playing golf and is involved with Holy Family Catholic Church and Telephone Pioneers. Class of 1965 Class Agent: Don Reiss (502) 243-1587 Daniel Albers joined the County Attorney’s Office as Director of the Criminal Division. Bob Brand retired as Senior Director, Chief Products Counsel with the Harley-Davidson Motor Company in Milwaukee, Wis. He and his wife, Nancy, relocated to Louisville and hope to spend more time with extended family and old friends, including those in the St. X community. Class of 1967 Class Agents: Mike Shea (502) 609-3212, David Vollmer (502) 893-6045, and Tony Santamassino (502) 439-5039 Charles Buddeke has been appointed Chairman of the Louisville and Southern Indiana Bridges Authority, which is responsible for building the new Downtown bridge, the East End bridge and the rebuild of Spaghetti Junction. Glenn Kleier, author of the novel The Last Day, is set to release a new work, The Knowledge of Good and Evil in February 2011. The novel is based on some intriguing historical incidents and scientific facts. Paul W. Olliges retired in September 2009 after a 41-year career as a computer programmer and systems analyst for several local companies. He is enjoying this new chapter of his life immensely! In early October, the class held their annual golf outing at South Park Country Club. Class of 1971 Class Agent: Bert Erny (502) 445-9987 After 22 years with Cexec, Inc. in the Washington, DC, area, Ed Simpson retired on October 1, where he provided acquisition support to the FAA and supported its data telecommunications program. Over the course of the next year, he and his wife, Grace, are planning a move to the Southeast coast. One happy boy whose time has come to go play! David Lawyer, and his brother, Larry, have opened Naked Pizza, a new pizza franchise offering a healthy fast food alternative. Their first store is at 135 Breckenridge Lane in St. Matthews. Class of 1973 Class Agent: Rick Staab (502) 254-0014 and Mike Brangers (502) 550-9678 Kevin Arave, Joe Spoelker, Mike Brangers, Pete Gerstle, and Allen Gruner, enjoyed tailgating at the St. X vs. Trinity rivalry. Joe Nitzken returned to Vogt Power International, Inc. as Vice President of Engineering. Class of 1975 Class Agent: Alan Gates (502) 244-1987 Mark Grundy was honored as one of the 2010 Kentucky Super Lawyers, a list compiled by Law & Politics publishing. Thanks to all classmates who volunteered at St. Joe’s Picnic: Terry Baechle, Al Bolander, Bill Bellis, David Denny, Bob Flynn, Alan Gates, Gary McGruder, Sonny Showalter, Gene Wilson, and David Worland. Mark Saurer was the first base umpire in the girls’ Little League World Series televised on ESPN2 on August 21st. The game was played in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Class of 1976 Class Agent: Mike Sheehan (502) 298-2956 On June 26, Commander Jerry Nauert assumed command of United States Coast Guard Port Security Unit Number 309, based at Port Clinton, Ohio. One of only eight, the 140-plus person unit is a rapid deployable force that responds globally during times of crisis to areas to secure ports utilized by United States assets. Class of 1979 Class Agent: Kevin Elliott (502) 379-7197 Robert Brousseau was named Director of Corporate Communications for Peptides International Inc. Don Kelly was elected Chairman for Junior Achievement of Kentuckiana Inc. Class of 1982 Class Agent: Earl Winebrenner (502) 671-0015 Editor’s Note: Will Elpers ’10, son of Tommy Elpers†, was inadvertently left off the list that appeared in the summer issue, as member of the Class of 2010 whose father graduated in 1982. We apologize for the error. Eddie Lacefield married Betty Redfern on July 31. The happy couple resides in Ocala, Fla. Holly and Earl Winebrenner have been selected to chair a brand new event to the Saint Xavier community, Legacy…A Gala of Giving. The event will premier at St. X on Saturday, February 26, 2011, and will recognize members of the St. Francis Xavier Society, invite new members into the charitable community at St. X, and bring everyone together for an evening of fun and excitement. Also, as class agent, Earl Winebrenner was honored as the 2010 Outstanding Class Agent at the annual Class Agents meeting on September 9. The Class had a tailgate tent at the St. X vs. Trinity football game and over 70 grads stopped by throughout the night. A great time was had by all and plans are in the works for a different get-together in 2011. Contact Earl Winebrenner with any suggestions. The tennis tradition continues for Tim Gornet. Tim’s son Austin Gornet ’12, reached the semi-finals of the U.S. Tennis Association tournament in doubles on August 12, held in Kalamazoo, Mich. It was the first team from Kentucky to make it that far since 1962. Congrats to one proud papa! Ed Fallon and Paul Brezosky celebrated 21 years together on October 20. Congrats guys! UPS promoted John Beck to full-time supervisor in Industrial Engineering. Heaven Hill Distillers elected Steven E. Feller as Vice President of North American Sales.
