<strong>Alaska</strong> McDonald’s<br />
Student Scholarship<br />

As the founder <strong>of</strong> McDonald’s, Ray Kroc’s<br />
message was “if you believe in it, and<br />
you believe in it hard, it’s impossible<br />
to fail. You can achieve anything in the world<br />
that you want.” In honor <strong>of</strong> his dedication to<br />
the power <strong>of</strong> believing, the <strong>Alaska</strong> McDonald’s<br />
Operator’s Association set up a scholarship<br />
fund to encourage <strong>Alaska</strong>’s youth to believe<br />
in themselves. The $5,000 scholarship is<br />
awarded to graduating high school seniors<br />
who have demonstrated a commitment to<br />
their community.<br />
The first recipient <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Alaska</strong> McDonald’s<br />
Student Scholarship, Jeff Bue, exemplifies<br />
Kroc’s philosophy. During his first year as a<br />
full-time student at UAF, he was busy taking<br />
classes, playing intramurals and working on<br />
his research project, which illustrated how<br />
arsenic can be transferred to lettuce from<br />
heavily tainted well water used for gardening.<br />
Although he is a business administration<br />
major with plans <strong>of</strong> becoming a dentist, he<br />
pursued the arsenic research out <strong>of</strong> personal<br />
curiosity.<br />
In addition to the <strong>Alaska</strong> McDonald’s Student<br />
Scholarship, Bue was also awarded the<br />
Lawrence Bayer Business Administration<br />
Scholarship and UA Scholars Award. “Winning<br />
these scholarships made it possible for me<br />
to take classes year round at UAF without<br />
being forced to have a job at the same time<br />
as going to school. The ability to focus on my<br />
classes without worrying about a job made it<br />
easier to take heavy class loads, work to earn<br />
high grades, take on a major undergraduate<br />
research project, and spend some time on<br />
community service projects,” Bue said.<br />
