Culture Night Programme of Events 2020

A Sense of Place is something that we have all felt acutely in 2020. Be that our place in time or within the home, our neighbourhood, our community or our world. What has shone through is our instinct to connect and protect, to make things better not just for ourselves but those around us, near and far. Lockdown brought many of us as close as we have ever been to experiencing life without our social and cultural rituals. Of course for many, due to health, poverty or social exclusion this is their reality all the time. The role our artists, cultural organisations and volunteers play in striving to nurture inclusivity and meaningful connection in our society has always been vital but never more apparent than in these challenging times. What has emerged is that how, no matter what, we as people will find a way to come together – be it online, across the airwaves, from our window, doorstep or at a distance. This programme of Online and In Venue events brought to you by the arts and cultural community from throughout the Derry & Strabane District, reflects some of the creative ways we continue to Connect through Culture to nurture a Sense of Place for all.

Designed and created by young people for a youth
audience, this short film aims to highlight the extent
of hidden disabilities in NI.
Contrary to public perception it is estimated that
71% of all disabilities are hidden and unseen in
Northern Ireland. Hidden disabilities can include
such conditions as Dyslexia, Asthma, Autism and
mental health issues.
As a result of the lack of understanding of these
conditions many individuals are misunderstood by
society and labelled. This film attempts to highlight
these conditions and create an environment where
people with these disabilities can be more accepted
in society.
‘Eveline’ is a 1914 short story by the Irish writer
James Joyce. It is the story of a young woman who
is planning to leave her repressive home to start a
new life with her fiancé in Buenos Aires. At the last
second, she decides to remain in Ireland with her
ageing father.
This story was chosen as a response to participants’
concerns about the ease of travel after Brexit,
and has themes of making life choices, home,
and imagining life in other places.
Finding George By Alys Jackson
On a walk in the city young Jayden notices a
homeless man. Unable to forget him, Jayden talks to
his mother and brother about him. A series of events
spin from the young boy’s interest in the stranger,
leading to a dramatic and uplifting finale.
‘The Old Man of the Sea’ is a 1955 short story by
the Irish writer Maeve Brennan. It is about a family in
Dublin who are visited by an old man selling apples.
Fearing the man may need to turn to begging without
their patronage, the mother buys apples from the
man. However, he begins to return every week
and the mother begins to buy far more apples than
she can use out of obligation. It was chosen for
its themes of charity, doing the right thing, sharing/
co-operation/ community, kindness, and optimism.
Aran knitting is a recognised symbol of Ireland
the world over. As a craft passed through families
visually it is now threatened by high volume off
shore production. Irish designer Edel MacBride is
passionate about keeping our knitting heritage alive,
appreciated and local. In this class she explains the
detailed edges, why they are important and how to
do them.
penned original material relating to lockdown and
the past 3 months.
“Amhrán nuachoimisiúnaithe faoin tionchar atá ag an
teicneolaíocht ar ár saol, cumtha ag Sam Cahoon agus
curtha i láthair i nGaeilge ag Lasairfhíona Ní Chonaola.
Newly-commissioned piece written by Sam Cahoon
and adapted for the Irish language by Lasairfhíona Ní
Chonaola reflects on the influence of technology on
our lives.
Long time ago in Japan, an old man went into the
mountains and found a beautiful fountain. Actually
this was the “Fountain of Youth”…enjoy a Japanese
folk tale accompanied by beautiful illustrations in the
Irish language with English subtitles. The screenplay
was taken from a story which an Irish-Greek writer
Patrick Lafcadio Hearn collected and wrote in English
while living in Japan 130 years ago. The video is
suitable for all ages.
Much Ado’s TeenAges Project is a fresh, innovative and
fun approach to sharing heritage and culture among
young people. In this special Culture Night production,
a group of teenagers from Much Ado take a journey
back to the 1900’s when the Hiring Fair was an intrical
part of Strabane’s History.
Exploring the issues, trials and challenges teenagers
faced in bygone days and drawing parallels with the
lives of our Teenagers as we emerge from Lockdown.
This process culminates in an original musical theatre
production under the Direction of Singer/Songwriter
Rois Kelly and reflects a ‘Sense of Place’ through time.
A Contemporary Dance piece performed by a troupe
of dancers from the ages of 12-18. This work is
reflective of the younger generations feelings of
pride in their area but also their longing to find a
“sense of place” in the world.
As they take to the forefront of campaigns dealing
with both social and political reform, it is a ‘call
to arms’ from the younger generation to the older
generations who sit in places of power. What about
Us! Is a declaration from these young people of
determination not to be overlooked or forgotten
in the shaping of their world.
Organs were installed in town halls throughout
the world to help bring classical music to the
communities they were serving. Organists would
share transcriptions and this was often the only
way that many could hear classical music without
the digital world we now live in.
Stuart Smyth presents a short program of Organ
works alongside transcripts of film and music
celebrating the colourful capabilities of one of this
musical city’s finest instruments which commands
the stage in The Guildhall’s Main Hall. The Guildhall
are delighted to continue to share this history and
music by providing this short program.
The Irish Musical Theatre Orchestra presents an
exciting showcase of brand new musical theatre
from both established and up and coming Irish
composers. Featuring some of the best local
musical talent as well as some guests from
further afield.
A hilarious film by Mockingbird Theatre. A desperate
woman becomes involved in the shady and often
dangerous world of monologues in Derry.
Leonor Bethencourt’s mother knocked the pillars
of the Bridge End and shook Strabane in 1970 when
she brought her Spanish black eyed fiance to meet
the family for the first time. He crashed his future
father in law’s car as they sped down the Moorlough
Road and ended in a field under a tree leaving deep
muddy skid tracks behind them, comparable only to
those left by Superman when he landed on earth in
a crater from outer space.
Locals surrounded the smouldering car and gawked
in awe at the sheer exotic nature of the unhurt
passengers. Combining interesting facts about
Strabane, personal memories and the meaning of
landmarks, Leonor Bethencourt presents a personal
documentary.
A short moving film about two barbers who reunite
for one last haircut during the Lockdown Crisis -
proving that we are never truly apart from the one
we love.
