AS I AM SURE YOU NOTICED, THIS YEAR IS 

DIFFERENT IN MANY WAYS. The good news is that 

Theresa Maher has returned this year as our Event Chair 

and Mark Reda has returned as our Awards Chair with 

the help of Donna Rossi as Vice-Chair. All the work for 

this event is accomplished throughout the year by 

committees, the Board of Governors and our one-of-akind 

Executive Director, Lara Gates. None of what you 

will see and experience would be possible without the 

hard work and dedication of the event team and board, 

which have been chosen by members of our chapter to 

lead this great organization. 

In addition to this evening’s events and the process 

leading up to them, one of our other priorities is to 

ensure we have a diverse group of board members, 

inclusive of other markets outside of the Greater 

Phoenix area, as well as from all corners of our industry 

and craft. We continue to stand by those in our 

community, in unity with the rest of America and the 

world, who are peacefully using their voices to empower 

the voiceless and support liberty and justice for all. As always, we 

support journalists who are doing their jobs to the best of their 

abilities during these recent, historically challenging conditions. 

Another priority is to continue focusing on our students through 

educational programs, scholarships and the Student Production 

Awards. When you have an opportunity, check out some of our

In closing, we remember and pay tribute to all the members of 

our community that we lost this year, along with their families, 

friends and loved ones.

LETTER FROM THE FIRST VP/AWARDS CHAIR 

Welcome to the 2020 Rocky Mountain Southwest Virtual 

Emmy Gala. 

WHAT HAS 2020 BEEN LIKE SO FAR? To quote a song from 

the movie “Doctor Dolittle”…I’ve never seen anything like it in my 

life! Welcome to the 2020 Rocky Mountain Southwest Virtual 

Emmy Gala. 

The reaction to the COVID pandemic affected our Awards process 

in several ways. The region’s broadcasters were working from 

home or not working at all. They were covering COVID-related 

news in addition to everything else that’s happened this year. 

They couldn’t access their past stories that they wanted to 

submit. In short…dogs and cats living together…mass hysteria! 

To accommodate our members’ disrupted schedules, the Awards 

Committee recommended to the Board of Governors to extend 

the entry deadline two separate times. The deadline was pushed 

back more than two months. In addition, we waived all late fees 

on your entries. 

It shows the measure of this region’s broadcasters that with 

everything going on, you were still able to submit 863 entries. 

In addition, there were fewer issues with the entries (judges’ 

challenges and the like). You all did great work! 

Also, as of September 1st, 233 of you judged entries from other 

regions this year. Thank you for your invaluable assistance to 

the awards process. I’m sure you found the experience rewarding and 

educational. For the rest of you, we can always use more judges. 

I’d like to thank the hard-working Awards Committee: Vice Chair, Donna 

Rossi, National Awards Chair Bob Adlhoch, Jennifer Jones, Micah Johnson, 

Danielle Lerner, Mike Headrick and Carol Lynde. A special thanks to ex officio 

member Genaro Delgadillo, who provided essential assistance during the 

confirmation process. 

Of course, the Awards Committee (and most other committees) could not 

function without our tireless Executive Director, Lara Gates. I can’t think of 

any more great things to say about her. 

The Awards Committee is available to all broadcasters in this region. We will 

respond to all inquiries and questions and will guide everyone who needs 

assistance through the process. 

Enjoy the virtual Gala. Although we all won’t be together in the same room 

to honor the nominees and celebrate the recipients, your accomplishments 

mean the same: Excellence.

The Board of Governors’ 

Award is for truly 

outstanding and unique 

accomplishments. This year, we 

honor KOB 4 in Albuquerque 

with the 2020 Governors’ Award 

for their project Safe Start New 

Mexico. 

This program has been a gamechanger 

for a community hit hard 

by Coronavirus and the resulting 

sudden economic downturn. 

KOB 4 assembled a “think tank” 

of local business, medical and 

civic leaders to help strategize the 

best ways to protect the diverse 

communities in New Mexico and 

to jump-start the economy in a 

responsible way. The Safe Start 

New Mexico group is leading 

the way with ongoing, proactive 

suggestions and dialogue with 

state and local leaders, business 

operators and legislators about 

positioning New Mexico for 

economic recovery in the safest 

possible manner. Congratulations

KNOWN AS “EL SEÑOR DE LOS DEPORTES,” 

FELIPE CORRAL HAS BEEN A FIXTURE at 

Univision Arizona for almost 27 years. During that 

time, he has covered many of the major sporting 

events in Arizona and Mexico, including the Super 

Bowl, the NBA Playoffs, and the World Series. “I 

strongly believe what makes Felipe Corral, ‘El Señor 

de Los Deportes’ so well known and loved amongst 

his viewers, is that he is a simple, kind, generous and 

humble human being,” says long-time coworker 

Gina Santiago. “He travels all over the state covering 

children playing sports, interviewing not only the 

players, but their coaches and parents.” 

But it is Corral’s work covering young athletes 

that sets him apart. “Felipe is a true believer 

that through his microphone he can support 

and motivate young athletes to keep fighting 

for their dreams,” says Univision Arizona anchor 

Heidi Renpenning. “He has used his microphone 

to motivate hundreds of young athletes. More than 20 years ago, he created the 

segment called ‘Promesas del Futuro,’ or ‘Future Promises,’ where he interviews 

young athletes and then follows them through their careers and some of them 

have made it all the way to the NFL, NBA, the Olympics and other national and 

international championships.” 

One of those young athletes featured on “Promesas del Futuro” is now nationally 

ranked Taekwondo fighter Jenny Quezada, who was then a freshman at Arizona 

State and is currently training to be a part of the 2021 U.S Olympic Team. Former 

Arizona Cardinals player Rolando Cantú, who is now the Cardinals’ manager of 

International Business Relations, remembers meeting Corral at training camp 

with the Cardinals in June 2004. “Felipe is a pioneer for Arizona Spanish broadcast 

television. While playing for the Arizona Cardinals as a professional player, I began to 

see opportunities in broadcast communication, watching people like Felipe for when 

it came time to retire from the NFL in hopes these doors would be open for me.” 

“Who doesn’t know Felipe Corral?’ asks Univision anchor Leon Felipe Gonzalez, 

rhetorically. “Going out with him on the street, he takes the time to greet everyone 

who recognizes him and asks for a photo or an autograph. He pays the same 

attention to both a janitor and the owner of an important Arizona sports team.”

Jennifer DOAN 

JENNIFER DOAN STARTED HER CAREER WHILE IN 

COLLEGE as a Graphics Operator at KOKH-TV in Oklahoma 

City, where she worked her way up to a Production Assistant. 

After graduating Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Broadcast 

Journalism from the University of Oklahoma, Doan moved to 

Phoenix in 1997 to take a job as a News Management Intern at 

KPHO-TV. After taking a year off from broadcasting to travel and 

perform around the world with Up With People, Doan returned 

to Phoenix in 1999 to join KSAZ FOX 10, where she is now the 

weekday Morning Show Producer from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. 

“Jennifer can’t sit still,” says co-worker Jeff Moriarty. “It could be 

blamed on her constant influx of chai tea lattes, but honestly it 

is rooted in her unwavering desire to help others however she 

can. She is the kind of person who constantly works to lift others 

up in both large and small ways. In the often overly competitive 

world of television, she works to support people and help them 

advance their careers. In my role as Digital Director, I worked 

to bring a lot of new ideas into FOX 10, many of which met with 

resistance by the veteran talent and employees. Not Jennifer. 

She loves trying new things and reaching out beyond her 

comfort zone. Television has been going through incredible 

changes the past few years, and rather than rest on the ‘way 

we’ve always done it,’ Jennifer incorporates new tools, new 

ideas, and tells stories in new ways. That energy and creativity 

was evident in her show, which is what it made it so successful.” 

“Jennifer is the heart and soul of Fox 10’s Morning Show,” says Moriarty. “She knows everyone 

in the Valley and can find an expert or a place to expand a story or topic. Give her a blank 

planning sheet and she can send out 12 texts and fill a two hour show as fast as she can type 

on her Blackberry. It’s more than just filling time, though. Jennifer loves the people who make 

up the stories she’s trying to tell.” 

In addition to producing “Arizona Morning” on Fox10, Doan is deeply involved in the 

community. She serves on the board of directors for Phoenix Sister Cities Commission, VNSA 

(a Phoenix non-profit that collects used books and holds one sale a year to benefit Arizona 

nonprofits) and the Reach Out Alumni Assistance Network, which raises thousands of dollars 

every year to help Up With People alumni across the globe who have found themselves in 

difficult situations. 

For the past nine years, Doan has served on the Board of Governors for the National 

Association of Television Arts Sciences - Rocky Mountain Southwest Chapter. She is the 

current secretary and its former Second Vice President and Chairperson/Producer of its 

annual, regional Emmy Awards gala.

Mike HARRIS 

MIKE HARRIS HAS WORKED IN TELEVISION/VIDEO SINCE 1993. He began his career 

shooting political talk shows for CNBC in Washington, D.C. while also working the assignment 

desk at WTTG. Mike moved back to Arizona and worked at KNAZ in Flagstaff. As a graduate 

of Northern Arizona University, he was happy to be back in Arizona. During that time, Mike 

mastered a new skill by filling in on holidays as a videographer so others could have the 

holidays with their families. 

Mike relocated to California and worked at KGET in Bakersfield and KSEE in Fresno. He moved 

back to Arizona in 1997, joining the videography staff at KTVK in Phoenix and later working at 

KPHO. Mike enterprised stories that he then produced, shot, wrote and edited. The first story 

he ever wrote and reported aired 

on CNN. Currently, Mike produces, 

shoots, writes and edits stories 

for the City of Glendale for their 

cable channel and social media 

platforms. 

Reporters lucky enough to be 

paired with Mike work with a 

true teammate. Famous for 

communicating with reporters 

about their joint vision and the 

best way to approach a story, Mike 

also never hesitates to jump in 

when he is done with his tasks to 

help someone else on deadline. 

Mike never settles for average, 

always seeking to tell a story 

uniquely and meticulously. 

Known fondy as “Glendale 

Mike,” he does numerous live 

reports about a variety of news 

events around the community. Inspired and deeply moved by a story about two patients 

with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease), he began 

volunteering for the ALS Association where he worked with a Major League Baseball umpire 

to shoot promotional material for the association as well as participating in several walks for 

ALS. Other volunteer endeavors include working with Paper Clouds, an organization that 

helps raise money for people who have special needs, and HAART Animal Rescue. 

Mike teaches videography as an adjunct professor at Arizona State University’s Walter 

Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. He is the recipient of four Rocky 

Mountain Southwest regional Emmy Awards, has been honored by the National Press 

Photographers Association multiple times and judged Videographer of the Year for the 

National Press Photographers Association.

Sterling POULSON 

STERLING POULSON IS A WEATHER ICON IN THE 

SALT LAKE CITY MARKET. He gets the 2News forecast 

dead-on every day, and looks dapper and has fun doing 

it. A Vietnam Veteran, Sterling earned his meteorology 

degree while serving in the Air Force. 

Sterling is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) 

with the American Meteorological Society and served as 

a member of the Board of Broadcast Meteorologists. He 

was a Severe Storms Forecaster assigned to the Air Force 

Global Weather Center and provided aviation forecasts in 

support of Air Force and Department of Defense missions 

worldwide. He served a tour in Vietnam from 1970-1971 

and is currently a member of the Utah Air National 

Guard assigned to the State Headquarters Public Affairs 

staff where he is the “Voice of the Utah National Guard.” 

Sterling’s television career began in 1985 when he joined 

KSL television in Salt Lake City as a weather producer and 

meteorologist. 

Sterling is involved as Music Director and Founder of The 

Choral Arts Society of Utah, conducting as many as six 

concerts each year with the 120 voice choir. He is Music 

Director of the Days of ‘47 Pops Concert and Executive 

Vice President of the Days of ‘47 Inc. He also serves on the 

board of the Clark Planetarium and chairs the board of the 

West Valley Symphony of Utah. 

In the Salt Lake City market, Sterling is home, with family, long-time friends, and yes, a 

‘sterling’ reputation for helping in the community through service and song. His volunteer 

time to help those in need is as immeasurable as his musical knowledge and talent. Utah is 

lucky to have Sterling Poulson.

Sean McLAUGHLIN 

SEAN MCLAUGHLIN IS MUCH MORE THAN 

JUST THE FAMILIAR FACE OF A NEWS 

ORGANIZATION. He is a consummate professional, 

a talented journalist, and newsroom leader for over 

25 years as well as being a dedicated family man. 

On weekday mornings, you can find him hustling 

his four children to school, a bit bleary-eyed from 

lack of sleep. But at night, you can find the veteran 

broadcast journalist serving multiple news/weather 

anchor roles for 3TV & CBS 5, Arizona’s Family. 

He comes in with multiple story ideas every day and 

contributes to the content on a consistent basis. One 

of the things Sean is known for is his “performance” 

at the twice yearly all station meetings with the 

corporate bosses. After the presentation from 

the big wigs is over and the floor is opened up for 

questions, every head twists and turns to seek out 

where Sean is sitting, knowing he has all of their 

backs and will ask the question everyone else wants 

but is afraid to ask. 

Career highlights include his stint as MSNBC’s main 

meteorologist and Sunday weather anchor on NBC’s 

“Weekend TODAY Show.” He appeared on all NBC 

platforms during the record-breaking hurricane 

seasons of 2004 and 2005, including non-stop 

coverage of “Hurricane Katrina” as it made landfall. Sean also has the distinction of anchoring 

weather on two network, weekday morning broadcasts, filling in for Al Roker over 90 times on 

NBC’s “TODAY SHOW.” Sean served as a fill-in meteorologist on “The EARLY SHOW” on CBS 

and has covered multiple Olympic Games, Super Bowls and is now a ten-time Emmy Award 

Recipient for both news and weather. He also maintains his Broadcast Seal of Approval from 

the National Weather Association. 

Sean represents the best of the best in our business. But, he is reminded daily that the real 

star of the family is his amazing wife Emily, who he met at the 1995 Phoenix Open. A true 

Arizona love story for a true Arizona treasure.
