Environmentally responsible waste recycling ADVERTISING FEATURE Hiring a Skip is the perfect way to get rid of unwanted household items, but have you ever wondered how it’s recycled after its been picked up? Ade Hill finds out more with Jamie Witt at J Witt Waste Recycling... Can you tell us more about who J Witt Waste Recycling are? We are a local family run waste recycling company. I set the company up in 2006 after working in the waste industry for a few years. It began from my realisation that there were some gaps in various recycling processes that I felt I could recycle better, and thus made the move to start a small recycling company with the goal of effectively recycling more - that little company has grown to the business it is today. What are the benefits of a skip from J Witt? We are a local independent waste recycling company committed to recycling as much as we can across the West Country and are fully licenced to collect and dispose of your unwanted items. Fly tipping has become a major issue in <strong>Mendip</strong>, especially more so during the lockdown period. What actually happens to my rubbish, after you’ve picked up the skip? Everything we collect, or anything that is brought into site via our weighbridge is sorted into material categories, which are then broken down and/or prepped for further recycling processes on site. For example a lot of our wood is processed and prepared on site to be ready for recycling into animal bedding pellets or processed further into recycled paper products or used to create more energy for the grid. Are you surprised at what gets skipped? Yes – always, we can find pretty much anything in our skips, the good the bad and the ugly! What can you and cannot recycle? There isn’t much we can’t recycle as we have an licence to process most things, however there are materials that require special attention – like certain types of plastic film or hazardous materials like asbestos – if you have any questions about what to recycle and how its best to phone our office for advice. What can’t you take away as waste? Technically anything that has been discarded is considered as waste, but practically we are unable to take lots of liquid waste on-site or waste oils. We are able to take some hazardous wastes, but this is best discussed and arranged prior to moving the material. Do you have special equipment that can recycle certain items? Yes, we have lots of different pieces of plant and machinery on site to help us effectively sort and recycle as much as possible, from magnets for metals, fans for paper waste and wash plants for sorting and recycling aggregates. How much of the waste you receive actually goes to landfill? As little as possible! As a company we aim to find a recycling process for as much as we can, currently up to 80% of all materials are processed for recycling and we are aiming to push this figure higher in 2021. What is a waste carriers licence and waste transfer licence? Both the waste carriers and waste transfer licences are issued by the Environment Agency and means you can legally carry, transfer and process waste. It is a legal requirement to have and enables the EA to keep track of waste across the country and make sure that its being recycled properly. So avoid the social media man with a van types? Yes, definitely, make sure that anyone you use to collect and dispose of your waste has a waste carriers licence and they are taking the waste to a site that has a waste transfer licence. Unfortunately not only is fly tipping illegal and damages our countryside, any waste that is fly tipped can be traced back to the source and the owner of the waste can be fined as it is the customers job to check a waste disposals credentials before they use their services.
