Cheryl Brown
about:
Sculptor Cheryl Brown works with bronze and cast silver. Her unique
silver pieces are contained in sheet copper boxes and her impressive
freestanding bronze works are made as both one-offs and in small
editions.
Cheryl’s early work was influenced by dance and movement but a trip to
Spain in 2005 saw her change direction. A visit to the bull ring museum
in the ancient town of Ronda proved inspirational. The stunning beauty
of the victorious matadors and the delicate bull skulls preserved in cases
created strong images to work with. She returned to Ronda in 2006 and
developed new work from the experience. Cheryl’s bird studies evolved
from her bull heads. One in particular called ‘sunbird’ seemed to open
up a new abstracted way of working. This led to more textural pieces
such as her pheasant, prado deer and goat. The rugged landscape of
Leitrim is now proving to be a great source of inspiration to Cheryl.
When creating her sculptures Cheryl uses a spontaneous approach, allowing the materials to inform how the finished
pieces look. Her work is in both public and private collections, including AIB, Ballsbridge, the Office of Public Works,
Dublin and the Causeway Hospital, Coleraine.
