FROMTHEThe academic year at Univended in a rather different waythan anyone could have guessed.Instead of writing to you about ourachievements and successes over athree-term period, the year had twoconventional terms, and Trinity Term saw nostudents in residence at all.That shaped the College’s musical offeringsbeyond all recognition, but more about that later.The year began with the usual scramble inWelcome Week; auditions for the Chapel Choir,UCMS trying to discover which incoming firstyearshad musical talents, overt or otherwise,Freshers’ Fair and Freshers’ Flu. The Chapel Choirlost many strong singers at the end of Trinity 2019,and the new-look choir was put through its pacesdue to the Director of Music’s pledge to schedulemusic by women composers at each service, bothin an ongoing bid to redress the heavily malebiasedimbalance in choral music, and to coincidewith the College-wide celebrations of the 40thanniversary of the acceptance of women to theundergraduate body.Over the year, until March 2020, there wasmusic by a woman in every service, and almostevery concert. The Choir performed piecesby Amy Beach, Kerensa Briggs, Diana Burrell,Sarah Cattley, Janette Fishell, Imogen Holst,Sasha Johnson Manning, Sarah Macdonald,Cecilia McDowall, Roxanna Panufnik, AnnaThorvaldsdottir, Judith Weir and Janet Wheeler,with some of these composers being representedmore than once. This commitment means thatthe music collection owned by the College isslightly more balanced, and these pieces willbecome core repertoire for the generations ofsingers to come. The challenges of rehearsingand performing this music though, are many.DIRECTOROF MUSICMuch of these pieces have beenwritten in the last 40 years andsome of it is of a difficulty levelsometimes beyond what is thenorm for a choir such as Univ. JudithWeir’s Illuminare, for example, had manyof the choir scratching their heads, but theycame to love it once they were able to sing it!Corporate memory is a factor never to beforgotten with choirs. The fact that two thirds ofa group may know a piece makes it easier for theothers to learn it. And the cycle continues fromterm to term, year to year. This will be one ofthe fundamental challenges presented to choirswhen they come out of lockdown in the comingmonths; collective knowledge will have been lostbetween March and October.The first concert of the year was given bycurrent Univ graduate student Sofia Vaz Pinto(piano) who was joined by Sofia Sousa (viola) in arecital of music by Rebecca Clarke, Schubert andBrahms. It was an intimate affair in the Master’sLodgings, but started the year off wonderfully,with the Clarke a particular highlight.The Chapel Choir and The MartletEnsemble joined forces, along with the choir ofSt Edmund Hall, to present a concert of musicfor Remembrance Day. Gabriel Fauré’s Requiemis one of the most-loved works in the choralrepertoire, and it has long been on the agenda tostage it at Univ. It was performed in the original,harp, low strings and organ version, with soloistsMaryam Wocial (Lincoln) and Giles Underwood,conducted by Christopher Bucknall, Director ofMusic of St Edmund Hall. The first part of theconcert consisted of unaccompanied choralmusic by Briggs, Douglas Guest, Edward Elgar,Johnson Manning and Charles Villiers Stanford,conducted by Giles Underwood.University College Record | October 2020 47
