to the many Old Members who have alreadypledged substantial gifts, despite the financiallyuncertain times. It was a pleasure to meet a goodnumber of them on my visits to the United Statesin November, and to Singapore and Hong Kong inDecember, and to accompany many around theUniv North site before visits necessarily came toa halt in March.The advances in information technologythat sustained the College in lockdown werea salvation, but cannot compensate for theexperience of immersion in College life, or forthe pleasures of belonging to a community of likemindedpeers. They provide an efficient means ofimparting information and opinions, but these fallfar short of the knowledge and understandingthat can only be the product of close and regularinteractions with tutors and fellow students.For these reasons the University decided inJune that, subject to Government guidelines, itwould re-open for Michaelmas Term, in contrastto Yale, Harvard and other leading Americanuniversities who opted to offer only onlineteaching until at least the end of the calendar year.It was the right decision, however challengingthe logistics of arranging for a close-knit collegecommunity to live and study together at a socialdistance. These challenges became even moreformidable, once the University agreed to admitall applicants who had been offered a place onthe basis of their “Centre-assessed grades”. InOctober, Univ will welcome the largest numberof freshers in its history – about 125, comparedwith the annual cohort of 105-110 it took in untila few years ago.The College spent much of the long vacationplanning the new arrangements for Collegeresidence that social distancing requires. Theseincluded limiting numbers in the Library andfinding additional space for reading rooms,dispersed seating in Hall and the provision oftakeaway meals from the buttery, allocatingevery resident student into staircase or corridor“households” of six to eight, for purposes of selfisolationin cases of infection and, most urgent anddifficult of all, securing additional accommodationfor the bumper intake of freshers. It also involvedfresh thinking about how best to integratefreshers into the College and create a community,when so many of the events that bring studentstogether, from Freshers Week to drama “cuppers”to novice boats on the river, will not be possible.Univ’s new Master, Valerie Amos arrives ata uniquely difficult and uncertain time for theCollege and the University at large. But sheis fortunate to be taking over a college that isresilient, resourceful and united, and that willrespond with energy to her leadership. All floodsrecede; all epidemics subside.
