across 70+ hospitals in governmental, military, and private
sectors. It is a distinguished Saudi Arabian company which
adopts international quality standards taking into
consideration the local needs. OASIS is a comprehensive
system that provides solutions for managing all clinical and
administrative activities in the hospitals such as the master
patient index, electronic medical record, outpatient

and so on, which transforms hospitals into a coherent and
paper-less environment.
In addition, it enables hospitals to implement decision
support solutions for physicians such as drug databases, and
management decision support programs such as Oracle BI.
The system also has a reliable record of providing
connectivity with systems and devices such as the PACS
System, laboratory analysis devices, and others creating an
effective and coherent work environment with better
information sharing.
OASIS also empowers patient engagement through the
patient portal and mobile applications that allows patients to
access and manage their medical data and bookings with
ease.
Overcoming Various Challenges
The company states that customer expectations are always
very high, and they are expecting the HIS not only to fulfill
the gaps of required software, but also to provide solutions
and enhance the business process. Accordingly, it is
investing in the teams to provide them with the needed
experience and knowledge to add real value to the
customers’ process and increase the customers’ satisfaction.
It believes that market changes include transition to
privatization and demand changes. OASIS enriches its
product portfolio by adding new products such as OASIS
Mini and Tele OASIS. These products aim to increase the
market share of private sector and to facilitate access to the
new sector of polyclinics and clinics, which was not
available for OASIS products before.
Noteworthy Achievements
OASIS is renowned for offering its system across 75
hospitals in the region. The system is operational in more

than 10,000 beds in the ministry of health with a market
share of 18%. It is widely used in more than 25 private
hospitals. Team OASIS is proud that a local company is
functioning efficiently all over the kingdom. The system has
been popular among senior manager and IT directors in the
ministry of health for a decade. The company is a leading
provider of HMIS in the region, and a strategic partner for
the Ministry of Health.
Industry Outlook
The company states that the public healthcare sector in the
kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) represents approximately
79% of bed capacity. It expects the private sector to grow at
a faster pace than the government sector. “The Saudi
government policy seems to be emerging as a regulator and
facilitator encouraging the private sector to bridge the gap
in the healthcare sector in the KSA”, states team OASIS.
It opines that the demand for private healthcare and the
share of private sector has been increasing gradually. The
company reckons that the public sector’s role is also
gradually transitioning to become more of a regulator rather
than as a provider of healthcare facilities.
OASIS Team further adds, “Increased demand for
Healthcare Quality KSA’s healthcare facilities are observed
to be accredited by JCI, HMIS and ACHSI. These
accreditations are one of the key factors’ patients consider

due increase in prevalence of number of lifestyle diseases;
diabetes, obesity, depression, strokes, cardiovascular
diseases, blood pressure, etc”.
The Future Horizon
OASIS aims to expand its market share, target new market
segment, and align with Vision 2030 to improve the quality
and efficiency of health care services. In order to achieve its
strategic objectives for the upcoming five years, the
company is planning to provide a cloud HMIS solution for
small hospitals, clinics, and polyclinics.
The cloud HMIS will be sustainable and affordable for this
segment. In addition, the system will help care provider to
make smarter decision, care plan, and resource planning.
OASIS HMIS has integration with leading company to ease
health care process such as Nuance voice recognition and
Wolters drug interaction system.
Moreover, the company also intends to lead the market in
the telemedicine arena. OASIS will launch a consultation
services to help the clients and others to have an
outstanding experience in the application of HMIS. Team
OASIS states, “Investing in artificial intelligent and
providing affordable solution to a segment that was
neglected for a decade for sure will improve quality and
efficiency of health care services in the region”.
Words of Advice
The company believes that healthcare is not an easy field to
break into as an entrepreneur. Beyond the operations of
business, one must attain knowledge about complex science
and tech. It is of the opinion that this vast amount of
complexities will be solved only by the power of simple
ideas. “Believe in your ability to generate disruptive
solutions. Start building today, and trust that your hard
work will pay off in the future, because it will”, adds team
OASIS. It advises young entrepreneurs to learn from
efficient mentors, knowledgeable peers, and then give their
best. Team OASIS emphasizes on Steve Job’s speech at
Stanford: “you can’t connect the dots looking forward; you
can only connect them looking backwards so you have to
trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future”.

Revolutionizing Indian
Healthcare Space
with Dynamics of IT
Mr. Aravindan Selvaraj
Director of Sales and Marketing
IT in Health improves the quality of healthcare delivery
which increases patient safety, decreases medical
errors, and strengthens the interaction between patients
and healthcare providers. The purpose of Healthcare IT is to
provide better care for patients. It assists in recording
patient’s data to improve healthcare delivery while
facilitating analysis of this information for both healthcare
practitioners and the ministry of health/government
agencies.
Keeping in mind the importance of IT in the healthcare
sector, this month’s issue of Insights Care showcases an
exclusive Interview with Mr Aravindan, Director – Sales
& Marketing. Aosta Software Technologies India Ltd.
Mr Aravindan is instrumental in setting up the sales org for
Aosta and to his credit has opened up the international
markets for Aosta. He shares some quality information on
how the Indian healthcare domain is fairing with everchanging
technological advancements and the advent of IT
in its services.
IS: How did Aosta come into existence? Kindly describe
its journey till date.
Aosta: We belong to a large business group in South India
called Dr. NGP Group. This group has many portfolios like
Hospitals, Pharma, Academics, Software, etc. The very
popular hospital chain – KMCH is part of the group and our
journey has started by servicing the internal IT
requirements of our own hospital.
The product ideation has started from there and during that
timeline (the Year 2000-01), there were only a few players
in HIMS space and we thought it would be a good idea to
make a product of the work we did for KMCH. BackBone
HIMS was born and initially, we had only a few modules
like registration, billing, lab, etc. Then a proper technical
team was formed and today we have more than 25 +
modules and BackBone is a very mature product in PLC.
The journey had its own ups and downs with different
teams heading the sales/management portfolio. But during
the last 5 years, Aosta has leapfrogged registering more
than 70% growth increasing to the top line and profitability.
Today we are present in 5 more countries apart from
strengthening our base in the domestic market with more
than 150+ hospitals using our application.
18 | February 2020 |
Interview with Insights Care
IS: Brief us about the Founder/CEO of the company and
the major contribution of him/her towards the company.
Team Aosta: The founder of the group is Dr. Nalla G
Palanisamy, a visionary businessman with great acumen
and leadership skills. He is instrumental in taking Aosta and
the overall group to greater heights with each unit
functioning in a profitable manner.
He has helped us to leverage the natural synergy we have
had in the clinical and administrative domain, thanks to
KMCH. Aosta has created a niche advantage in the market
due to this and we are able to transcend that advantage to its
customers as well.
Our CEO Dr. Mohan Gounder is based in the USA and
his technical finesse has helped us to adopt the latest
Healthcare IT practices in our application. Platforms like
EMR, Mobile Apps, etc. are developed with his intense
contribution and that proved to be a big differentiator for us.
Besides, he has helped to diversify the company with new
service offerings like KPO but sticking to the core domain
strength of Healthcare and IT.
IS: Kindly share with us in detail about the IT Solutions
that you provide. How this has benefited the user
community?
Aosta: Our flagship offering is the ‘Hospital Information
Management System (HIMS)’. The product name is
BackBone – signifying its importance to the IT system of
any hospital. We are easily the top 5 HIMS vendors in the
country with significant market presence, customer
portfolio and mature technical and support teams.
As mentioned earlier, it is a mature product with the latest
features and benefits. It is completely web-based and
mobile compatible. The product has more than 25 different
modules catering to the various functions and departments
of a mature hospital, built with an aim to be used by any
individual with a decent understanding of IT skills.
With global standards like HIPAA and HL 7 compliance,
the product has outshone its competitors with proven
advantages. With sustained R & D and engineering, Aosta
is able to add more new features like Process Automation,
Reporting functionalities, Data mining, etc. in the
application. This is a big advantage for new generation
CXOs who would like to use the latest software tools for
decision making.
The very fact that we have more than 95% of customer
retention speaks volumes of the benefits each customer has
got from the product. BackBone really helps to improve
process efficiency, bring better controls, optimize resource
planning and more importantly a silent contributor to the
bottom line. It will be very difficult to quantify the same,
but BackBone has helped every customer by improving the
bottom line anywhere between 20-30% in a span of 2-3
years.
IS: What are the major challenges your company has
faced till date? What strategies did you use to overcome
those issues?
Aosta: The real challenge is managing and retaining the
domain knowledge as unlike traditional software products,
this also calls for a better understanding of the Healthcare
systems and protocols very well. We face major challenges
in retaining the talent for customer support and
implementation as they are like rolling stock and very
difficult to sustain them. Secondly, the hospital customer is
rather slow in embracing IT systems and most of the times
the readiness from the customer side found wanting for an
ERP implementation. For a hospital owner, IT is the last
line of control as the ROI is not pronounced like an
investment in a lab equipment or increasing a seat for a
doctor where the revenues are counted from day one!
So, Indian Hospitals do a big trade-off when it comes to
HIMS and most of the time software companies like us face
challenges in pushing them for a proper IT agenda – which
is more generic than the actual proposition of selling their
own services. The dearth of quality resources at the users’
departments in each hospital pose a major issue for us and
this leads to project delays and cost overrun.
At the market landscape, this HIMS domain is full of
regional players offering their solutions at very low prices
thus creating big anarchy among the Healthcare IT system.
This leads to perceptual imbalances among hospital owners.
Secondly, few bad implementations and processes leading
to overall slowdown for all the players including big names
like us.
IS: What have been your and the company’s major
accomplishments? Please mention any awards or
accolades received so far. (if any)
Aosta: The company has really seen very good growth in
the last 5 years ( more than 100%) thanks to the new sales
| February 2020 |19
team which used the product and support levers to acquire
new customers in new markets. From a player well known
in South India, today Aosta has staked its claim to be a
global player by improving its customer presence all over
India and overseas. The sustained presence of the core
domain team which is with the company from inception and
the excellent support mechanism helped the company to
retain its customers. We take pride in that achievement. We
have received many awards, to name a few:
• e India Award 2010 – For Successful Implementation at
800 Bedded Tertiary Care Multi-Disciplinary Super
Specialty Hospitals in Tamilnadu.
• e India Award 2013 – For Successful Implementation at
650 Bedded Medical University Hospital in Karnataka.
• Silicon India Award 2014 – Aosta one among the top 10
most promising company across India in Healthcare
Vertical
IS: Kindly brief us about your perspective on the current
healthcare industry scenario.
Aosta: We see lots of opportunities at the state level as
Healthcare is yet to be prioritized at the Central level.
Besides, states like Tamilnadu, Kerala, Karnataka, West
Bengal, etc have excellent Healthcare backbone and further
gives hope for players like us to invest and grow. The
country’s total spending on Healthcare is around 1 % of
GDP which is abysmally low compared to countries like the
USA, UK, etc. Even a couple of percentage points increase
will really stimulate the healthcare ecosystem to a major
extent. Schemes like Ayushman Bharat really has given the
impetus required for Healthcare and the citizens of India. In
particular, the Hospital industry is likely to achieve a
CAGR 0f 16-17% by 2022, surpassing all other industry
verticals on a growth curve.
On the process side, we see more Evidence-based Clinical
Decision Support System (CDSS) to be used in the coming
days coupled with HIMS to reduce medical errors and
improve the quality of diagnosis. This offers good potential
for those who like to get into medical research as a
business. Indirectly IT companies that are going to adapt
the latest technologies like AI, BI and Blockchain will take
advantage of this market’s needs.
Aosta: Aosta aims to reach out to newer territories in order
to extend its international presence in countries where the
rate of green-field hospital projects and the IT adoption in
hospitals is raising. For example markets like the Far East,
EMEA, etc.
We are also planning to create BackBone completely in
Open source, doing away with proprietary software
platforms that are required to run the application. We have
already achieved that for client machines (user nodes) and
soon the servers too will be available in the Open platform.
We are also coming with the SAAS model so that even the
small hospitals and clinics can get the benefits of BackBone
with out of box features without customization.
We will continue to stick to our strength in Healthcare IT
and many innovative solutions are on the cards like IoT, AI,
and Business Intelligence. We are using these tools to
facilitate decision-makers – be it doctors, administrators or
a finance person to automate some of the routine and
mundane activities.
IS: What advice would you give for the upcoming
generation of medical science enthusiasts and health-tech
entrepreneurs?
Aosta: With the increasing emphasis on the stringent and
quality selection process for medical education, it is
imperative that medical students understand IT systems
better and learn the nuances of using the same for their
clinical activities. For example one of the clients who run a
medical college has a certification paper in HIS/EMR as
eligibility for PG doctors!. As healthcare is a core and
essential sector for the growth of our economy, the Govt is
pushing its agenda on best practices and unified records
systems. For all this, IT adoption is a must.
Secondly, many startups have come up in recent days and
the majority of them focus only on Healthcare. We intend to
work very closely with such innovative startups who have
unique solutions to address the needs of Healthcare. This
could be in domains like IoT, Analytics, NLP, etc.
IS: Where do you see the company in the coming years?
What actions have you planned for the same?

Helium Health
Bringing Digital Transformation in Healthcare Sphere
Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems are
helping health care service providers to deliver
high-quality services. This system manages almost
everything from tracking patient information to scheduling
appointments, post-visit follow-up, billing and payment.
Such technological advancement has helped the healthcare
ecosystem to improve the complex workflows by providing
real-time information to deliver better patient care. One of
the largest electronic medical records providers in West
Africa, Helium Health launched EMR solution in 2016 to
build a system that eliminates paper records and digitalizes
the medical records. It has moved the whole system from
manual to digital for the storage of medical records.
The company is inspired by a vision of a connected
healthcare ecosystem across Africa to help patients get the
care they need when they need it. And to empower all
healthcare stakeholders with the actionable data and tools
that they require to make informed decisions. Today,
Helium Health provides the tools that over 5,000 medical
professionals use to treat over 150,000 patients monthly.
Easy Solutions
Helium Health provides simple to use solutions that require

handle on the performance and finances of their practice.
Moreover, the system is developed in a way that enhances
connectivity between its stakeholders.
Helium EMR, the flagship product, is an end-to-end

visit from check-in to check-out. It drastically reduces

data, and documentation errors by offering electronic datadriven
solutions. It empowers hospital administrators and
public stakeholders with vital clinical and financial data to
notice trends within a specific facility or across different
facilities. The software allows them to monitor performance
over time as well as the effectiveness of the intervention
actions and programs and highlight areas for improvement.
The Helium EMR software can run offline as well as on the
cloud to insulate against the effects of internet downtime.
This ultimately creates healthcare facilities that are more
efficiently run and allows health service providers to
provide better care.

addressing this challenge by providing training sessions for
all personnel prior to the commencement of deployments.

The company’s long term aim is to power the data that runs
the African healthcare system. It wants to improve how
healthcare is understood and delivered on the continent. In
the coming years, the company will be launching a suite of

the hard work is not going to reap some benefits, for others it is just the
beginning as regenerative medicine can do much more.
In 2006 when adult stem cells were discovered, no one could have
thought how these could be reprogrammed to work like embryonic
stem cells and give solutions to several chronic illnesses around the
world. It is an achievement that scientists have been able to regularly
treat concerns like Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, cardiovascular
diseases, retinopathy, hair loss, and more.
Stem cells have several features. To start with, the self-renewing
capability is the trademark property of stem cells in regular and
diseased tissues. Second, the cells that keep on partitioning over
extensive periods are substantially more prone to gather changes that lead to neoplasia and
different ailments. Third, the self-renewal of stem cells is constrained by flagging pathways in
various tissues. Every one of the characters of stem cells advance leads to new research. In
particular, undifferentiated cells can be utilized in new drug tests. Each analysis of living tissue
can be performed securely on explicitly separated cells from pluripotent cells. In the event that
any unfortunate impact shows up, ingredients can be changed until they arrive at an adequate
degree of viability. The medication can enter the pharmacological market without hurting any
living being. Notwithstanding, to test the medications appropriately, the conditions must be
equivalent when looking at the impacts of two medications. To accomplish this objective,
specialists need to oversee the differentiation procedure to create unadulterated differentiated
cells.
In any case, the way to progression isn’t as smooth as it ought to be. Among the disadvantages,
one of the primary points is that this kind of research requires gathering embryonic stem cells.
| February 2020 |25
Embryonic stem cells are obtained by destroying an unborn
organism when collected, which to some is an immediate
choice to end a human life. No measure of medicinal
research should come at the cost of human life regardless of
the number of individuals who could be possibly treated
from procedures created from this exploration.
Some disadvantages that need experts’ attention are:
• The medications created from stem cells are experimental
in nature. The best treatment presently is hematopoietic
stem cell transplantation (HSCtx). They are 90%
compelling and around 50,000 transplants happen every
year.
• The expense of a single stem cell treatment in the United
States is normally about $10,000. A few facilities have
discovered approaches to decrease this expense by up to
20%. Outside of the United States, the expenses can be as
high as $100,000. The expense of producing an embryonic
cell is up to $2,000 per occasion. Administrations rendered
to take undifferentiated stem cells may not be incorporated
into the treatment cost and could be a few thousand dollars.
What’s more, since stem cell medications are experiments
in many cases, medical coverage plans, and governmentoffered
advantages don’t go for the most part give access to
them.
• The ethics of undifferentiated stem cell research will
consistently put constraints on the medicinal capability of
this examination. People must settle on their own how they
will react to the morals of this examination. Is it allowed to
modify adult stem cells or embryonic stem cells? What are
the outcomes of destroying a developing life to get
undifferentiated cells, regardless of whether that embryo
would have been disposed of? A few people will feel the
whole procedure is dishonest and that can keep creating
obstacles in the research.
Although the demonstrated advantages of adult stem cell
research are to some degree restricted by current scientific
technologies, the future capability of this procedure keeps
on motivating many scientists and doctors across the world.
Numerous chronic ailments, for example, birth defects or
disease, are brought about by inappropriate differentiation
or cell division. As of now, a few undifferentiated organism
treatments are conceivable, among which are medicines for
spinal cord damage, cardiovascular breakdown, retinal and
macular degeneration, ligament cracks, and diabetes type 1.
Undifferentiated cell research can further help in a better
understanding of stem cell physiology. This may bring
about discovering better approaches for treating chronic
ailments.

FINDING THE PERFECT
IVF CLINIC
Reproductive medicine is growing rapidly, providing
options for people who face infertility challenges
IVF is usually effective, though not always immediately for
all women, research suggests that if you’re considering
assisted reproductive technologies to help you conceive, it
is suggested that you chose your fertility clinic well and that
can improve your odds of a good outcome. But with so
many clinics out there to choose from deciding which one
best meets your needs can feel a bit overwhelming. You can
use the following pointers to help you chose a clinic that
meets your needs.
• Do some research: All fertility clinic may apparently
look the same, but they are not, and it does not hurt to do
your homework.
You may want to consider inquiring about the success rate
of the clinic. While inquiring about the success rates it is
advisable to compare oranges to oranges so compare the
success rates for your age group and also the kind of
treatment that you plan to do. Once you are convinced
about the success rates it’s a good idea to have a look at
their accreditation you can either look for ISO, ISAR or a
NABH accreditation in the Indian subcontinent. Also make
sure that the clinic is registered with the ICMR (Indian
Council of Medical Research)
• Ask Questions: Before you commit to an IVF clinic its
always best to ask all the questions that come to mind even
if you think they are silly. It’s your treatment and you need
to be at peace at what you are proceeding with and it’s your
right to know every pro and con about the treatment or any
other question that may come to mind. Some of the
questions you may consider asking
• The process of IVF per se
• How many embryos do they transfer?
• What is their embryo freezing program like? What is
their contract time period? What will be renewal clause
be?
• Do they prefer a day 3 or a day 5 transfer?
• The technique of fertilization --- ICSI for all or IVF for
selected cases?
• Do they have an identification system in place for the
Gametes?
• How are donors screened and allotted?
• Will you need genetic screening?
• Will you need sperm selection techniques?
• What will happen when you get pregnant? who will you
follow up with?
• What will happen if you don’t get pregnant?
• If attempting genetic screening – you may want to ask
which lab they are associated with for the analysis?
• Do they have a in house full time andrologist and
embryologist?
• Is it an all under one roof facility?
• Find out if they have a psychological counselor or a
patient support group: It is important for a fertility clinic
to offer indicated medical treatment to help you conceive
but it’s also important that there is enough emotional
support available while you are embarking on one of the
most emotional journeys of your life. Also, if the sessions
with the psychologist are chargeable or are free of cost.
• Consider the Monitory factors: Always take your
financial counseling in written from the clinic. Consider
have they given you all the inclusion and exclusion
criteria’s in written. The inclusion criteria you may want to
look for are gonadotropins, blastocyst transfer and luteal
support medicine till Bhcg. Always gauge how transparent
30 | February 2020 |
Expert’s Opinion
they are attempting to be in their pricing.
• Trust your instincts: When you’re considering a
fertility clinic, always trust your gut feeling. I think
patients’ gut feelings are usually pretty good. “Your
gametes are one of life’s most precious commodities take
time to get a sense of the people who are going to be
handling them for you. Consider how the clinic’s staff talk
to you, what they say – how professional does the care feel?
Use all of your senses. Is the care personalized and
professional enough, so you feel comfortable?”
• If applicable to you may want to find out more about
the special program the center has:
- Who is the andrologist attached with the center if you are
going to need testicular sperm extraction?
- If you are looking for social fertility preservation: then
you may want to know about their oocyte freezing
facilities. Find out how many times you may need to do
egg retrievals to freeze the optimal number of oocytes.
What is the payment structure? How long will the
oocytes be cryopreserved according to the initial
contract; how will the renewal clauses be.
- Fertility preservation program for cancer patients
Even after all the above pointers only you can know
which clinic suits you best and always remember A
great fertility clinic isn’t just one that can give you
effective treatment, it’s one with compassionate staff,
clear pricing, seamless administrative processes and
exceptional emotional support.
