AN EAGLE FLIESOVER RAJAHAN ASPIRING EAGLE SCOUTPARTNERS WITH SHRINERSBy Sam EllisDylan Confer has been in scouting since grade school. He is now a senior atParkland H.S. He is a member of Troop 1600, Jordan UCC, Allentown.During his last year in school, Dylan is working towards the highest rank a scoutcan achieve, that of an Eagle Scout. Becoming an Eagle Scout takes perseveranceand work. Boy Scouts must earn all the ranks in order. Among the seven steps inattaining the Eagle Scout badge, Dylan has earned the required 21 merit badges,and he has served in leadership positions for at least 6 months, having managedCub Scout Dens as an example. One of the most difficult requirements is topropose, plan, and carry out an Eagle Service project. The project must benefitthe organization that it is done for.That service project was how Dylan came to be involved with Rajah Shrine.Dylan was aware of the Shriners and the work they do supporting the Children’s Hospitals. He also is friends with Wayne Grumbein’sson Jarrett Nguyen, so he was aware of a lot of Shrine activities that Jarrett’s dad was involved in.8Life Scout Dylan ConferDylan decided that he would like to do his service project for the Shriners.“I thought it would be a neat thing to help out,” he said, “since they doso much for children and it’s all on a volunteer basis.” Eventually therelationship with the Grumbein’s led to John Grumbein, Wayne’s father,helping make the connection with Rajah.A meeting was held at the complex where Dylan, his mother April,and father Douglas met with the Board of Directors. Dylan explained thatone of the requirements of attaining his Eagle Scout rank was managinga volunteer service project. His request was met with knowing smiles asseveral Rajah Shriners are Eagles Scouts and have gone through the longprocess in attaining their Eagle Scout badges themselves.The outcome of the meeting was a plan that included refurbishing oneof the buildings at the complex. Les worked with Dylan on the details and,within a few days, the project came to life.Dylan managed a team of up to 9 scouts, his scout master, his youngerbrother, and a few Shriners such as Bruce Denlinger and Les Werley. Theydid power washing and painting of the residence building.Les Werley commented that “Dylan did an admiralable job in managing this diverse groupof workers and, in doing so, he gained valuable experience.” The experience will stand himwell in his journey to becoming at Eagle Scout.The requirements are difficult and only about 6.5% of all eligible Boy Scouts earn theirEagle rank.Since it takes so much work, why do boys do it? Some are mature enough to understandthe impact that having the award will have on their lives. Others are encouraged by theirScoutmasters and by their parents. Dylan’s parents are involved in his scouting. His motherApril is on committee with Troop 1600, Minsi Trail Council, North Valley District.Scouting and Masonry share common values. And well they should because The Boy Scoutsof America was founded in 1910 by Masonic Brothers Daniel Carter Beard, William D. Boyce,and James E. West, along with Mr. Ernest Seton. These founding fathers succeeded in creating one
of America’s finest youth organizations by introducing the values of Freemasonry. AndMasons have stayed involved in scouting.The Daniel Carter Beard Masonic Scouter Award is a Boy Scout CommunityOrganization Award, used by community organizations to honor their volunteers fortheir involvement in Scouting. Grand Lodge awards an Eagle Scout CommendationCertificate for Scouts in Pennsylvania.We wish Dylan success in his quest. We understand that he is just a few months awayfrom attaining his goal and becoming an Eagle Scout. He will be in good company, asmany successful people in business, politics, sports, and even NASA are Eagle Scouts.Among them is one of this writer’s personal heroes: Neil Armstrong, the first man onthe moon was an Eagle Scout, as was President Gerald Ford, and movie director StevenSpielberg. The most successful Eagle Scout (by net worth) is Sam Walton, founder ofWal-Mart.Upon graduation, Dylan hopes to enter college and study engineering. In our opinionhe is on his way to a successful life and career. The Boy Scouts of America producemany fine young men, including Eagle Scouts, who may become members and leadersin our great Fraternity. Maybe someday we will see Dylan as a leader in Rajah Shrine.Jere Lesher,PPLEGION OF HONORDon’t hold your breath, but things are gradually coming back to normal. So far, it’s been one stepforward, then half a step back. Hang in there and keep your fingers crossed.On the plus side, our Commander’s Ball was a big success. We had 62 people in attendance and Ididn't hear a single complaint. Doubletree Hotel did a fabulous job. Accommodations were very good,food was very good, and the entire staff couldn’t have been better. I understand that Doubletree also didan excellent job for the Potentate’s Ball.The entertainment was also very good. No stage play, but a very excellent magician who walkedaround from table to table and did his thing. We’ve all seen magicians, but this guy was outstanding.Here’s another reminder for that trip we have planned to the International Tattoo in Norfolk, Virginia.It is scheduled for April 16 & 17, 2021. A flyer will be sent as soon as we have all the information. Thosewho had scheduled for the 2020 trip that gotcancelled get first dibs. There will be a limitednumber of reservations, probably around 50, soget yours in early. This trip is restricted to adultsonly. If you’ve never attended this event, give it serious thought. I haveyet to hear a negative comment from those who have attended in yearspast. Everyone thought it was great.Our next Legion event (hopefully) is the Past Commander’s Nighton October 13. Keep your fingers crossed. Unfortunately, cancellationsthis year have been the name of the game. This is our annual pork &sauerkraut, hot dogs, and dessert dinner. This year, all our Ladies areinvited. Cost to all attendees (except Past Commanders) is $5.00.9
