Earns Gold
Congressional Award
Mollie Frazier will travel to Washington,
D.C. in June to receive her Gold
Congressional Award, the U.S. Congress’
award for young Americans. It is nonpartisan,
voluntary, and non-competitive.
The program is open to all 14-23 yearolds.
Participants earn Bronze, Silver and
Gold Congressional Medals. Each level
involves setting and achieving goals in
four program areas: Volunteer Public
Service, Personal Development, Physical
Fitness, and Expedition/Exploration
(congressionalaward.org).
Mollie completed over 475 hours of
Public Service by volunteering at the
St. Vincent de Paul food pantry,
St. Joseph’s Institute for the Deaf,
St. Joseph’s Hospital and the Wentzville
School District. For her Personal
Development, Mollie improved her public
speaking skills by participating on UA’s
Speech Team for four years as well as
earning the Christian Interscholastic
Speech League’s highest honor in Radio
Broadcasting this year. Her Physical
Fitness goal was to improve and
strengthen her love of dance by attending
dance classes at UA and being involved in
the Dance Club for four years.
For the Expedition/Exploration part of the
award, Mollie planned three different
trips that would broaden her horizons.
Her Bronze trip was a Katy Trail bike/
hike and a night camping. Her Silver trip
took her to Ursuline Academy in
Springfield, IL, where she stayed with a
host family and met students from the
school prior to its closing. Her Gold trip
was to South Dakota and included stops at
Mount Rushmore, Badlands National
Park, and the Mammoth Site.
From From the the President
President
Dear Ursuline Families,
On April 8 we held registration for the incoming class of 2012. The following Saturday,
April 12, over 240 mothers and their Class of 2012 daughters attended a breakfast hosted by
our Mothers’ Club. It is so heartwarming to see the eagerness of the incoming students,
balanced with the assuredness of our upperclassmen who helped with the event. Those of us
who have had daughters attend Ursuline know the positive impact it makes.
I believe the enthusiasm of our current families is contagious. So much of the excitement that
is demonstrated by our new families is due to the way our current families spread the good news of Ursuline by word of
mouth to friends, fellow parishioners, relatives and business associates.
Last month I asked parents to share stories about current and past UA students. At registration I spoke with the parent
of an alumna who will once again have a daughter attending UA. He graciously shared the following:
Ursuline helped
to plant the seeds
of Serviam in her
“Bridget is now a junior at Bellarmine University in Louisville. She has just gotten
back from a mission trip to Guatemala over her spring break. While there she
helped renovate a school and a health clinic in a small town called Gualan. They
also delivered school supplies such as pencils and notebooks which...are hard to
come by down there. What she enjoyed most was the tons of children that followed
them everywhere.
In the past year she has been on mission trips to the Gulf Coast, Mexico and Guatemala. She is contemplating the
Peace Corps when she graduates. The reason I mention this to you is because I know that Ursuline helped to plant the
seeds of Serviam in her. We are very proud of her.”
—Pat Cromien
This is one of many examples of UA women at work in the world. Look for the “Serviam Spotlight” in the News to Share
section of this magazine. We serve a fantastic group of young women. I can assure you that the time, talent and
treasures given today are well worth it. Someone once gave me a framed quote that states, “If you think education is
expensive, try ignorance.” At Ursuline, in addition to Academic Excellence, the motto of Serviam impacts a call to
social justice and Christian leadership.
I will always be in your midst, helping your prayers...encourage one another to continue courageously in the task you
have begun...and...rejoice...have a lively faith and hope...and I bless you in the name of the Father and of the Son and
of the Holy Spirit. Amen. (St. Angela Merici, Last Counsel)
Three UA Teachers Serve as AP Readers
Ursuline Academy is proud to announce that we have three teachers on staff who serve
as Readers of the Advanced Placement exams for the College Board Advanced
Placement Program—Mr. Joe Master (English), Ms. Tracy Nondorf (Government),
and Mrs. Janet Bagley (World History). Our students directly benefit from having
these teachers on staff as they educate our students at this advanced level. Mr. Master
has served as a Reader for several years while Ms. Nondorf and Mrs. Bagley will
participate for the first time this summer when college and university faculty and AP
teachers from around the world gather for the annual AP Reading in June. AP Readers
evaluate and score the free-response sections of the AP Exams to ensure that the tester
has demonstrated college-level achievement. Over 9500 teachers and professors
participated in the 2007 Reading.
Reflections Reflections of of of New New New Orleans Orleans
Orleans
The love of God was experienced in New Orleans during Spring Break, when 21 Ursuline students, five
co-workers, and Sr. Ann Barrett ’63 (a member of the Ursuline Provincial Team) served families still
devastated by hurricane Katrina. They stayed at Ursuline Academy of New Orleans and worked with “Project
Helping Hands” through the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Over and over, we have heard students and coworkers
alike discuss this trip as an “eye-opening and life-changing” experience. Our students and coworkers
returned with a renewed sense of the need to remember and respond to those affected by Katrina.
This trip was as
much of a gift to me
as our service was a
gift to New Orleans
Page 4
Maegan Maegan Rathmann’09
Rathmann’09
I did not know what to expect when I first arrived in New Orleans. I was unsure of
what the city would look like or how many citizens had repopulated the city. Our
drive from the airport to Ursuline Academy of New Orleans shocked me; I could not
believe that after nearly three years the city would still be in shambles. As we drove
through the city and neighborhoods, I could see that the rebuilding process was still
occurring—some houses were brand new, others were being renovated, and still others
looked as if they had not been touched since the day Katrina and the flood waters hit
New Orleans. It was heartbreaking to drive through the city each day, knowing that
the citizens’ greatest wish is for the city to return to normal, but it will take almost ten
years for this wish to come true.
As a group we worked on an apartment building which had previously provided independent
living for seniors. The first day we were told that only fifteen inches of water
had flooded the building but that mold had reached all the way up to the sixth floor. I
was horrified to learn that one foot of water could do so much damage to a building.
Hearing this also made me think about how much damage seventeen feet of water
could do to other buildings. It was hard to see the residents’ belongings still left in the
building. Looking at their things, I wondered where the residents were today and
whether or not they would be returning to New Orleans. Throughout all of this hard
work we bonded as a group and accomplished so much!
From our first day in New Orleans I could tell how grateful the people were. It was
hard for me to grasp the idea that every night a family would make us dinner or a
group of women would make us lunch without even knowing our group of girls. I met
so many people who were grateful that we, as youth, were working in New Orleans.
It’s hard for me to believe that people would thank me for working on a building
which had no connection or impact to anyone in their family. When I was shopping
down in the French Quarter, business owners would not only thank me for my business
but were amazed and grateful for the time that I spent working to help rebuild the city.
For me it’s great to know that as a youth I can accomplish something so great and help
so many people. Sr. Regina Marie, an Ursuline sister, said to us one day during lunch
that the reason our regular,
plain old turkey sandwiches
tasted so good was because
they were made with love,
and I believe that the residents
who move into the
apartment building will feel
the love which each of us
put into it. This trip was as
much of a gift to me as our
service was a gift to New
Orleans.

Michelle Michelle Miller Miller ’09
’09
After talking to girls who have gone on previous
trips, I had high expectations. Everyone claimed
that it was an experience they would never forget,
and couldn’t put into words the meaning they got
out of just one week. It wasn’t until I returned
home and tried to explain my incredible experience
to my family and friends that I realized just how
personal and meaningful the past week had been.
It is easy to tell someone who asks, “I went to New
Orleans and served as a volunteer, gutting an apartment
building.” It is easy to say that it was an incredible
week, and one that I will never forget.
However, it is hard to put into words exactly what
and how that one week affected me.
The following is a journal entry we were asked to write after completing our four
workdays. Dr. Gilligan’s suggestion was to write a letter to a future tenant of the
building, describing to them our experience and our hopes for their new home.
Dear Tenant,
In 2008, 21 girls and five teachers came to New Orleans over their spring break for a
service trip. We came expecting to see the results of building a house for a grateful
family. Instead, we were given the task of gutting your entire six-story apartment
building. We saw no tenants or your reactions to our work. In fact, you’re probably
moving in over a year after our trip.
At first our task was daunting and seemed impossible. We had dim hopes of seeing
anything fully accomplished. However, now at the end of the week and after four long
days of work, we realize the incredible size of the task we accomplished.
Now looking back, I want to thank you for this opportunity. Sure, I gave up four days
of my spring break to fix your home, but that doesn’t come close to what you have
given me. You have given me the chance at this once-in-a-lifetime experience; I have
learned so many lessons and made amazing bonds. I have learned the satisfaction of
giving 100% of my effort to a complete stranger. I have witnessed inspiring
teamwork and dedication, and I have grown closer to the other amazing people I was
blessed to share this experience with.
This service trip is packed with so much more meaning than any week on a beach, and
for that I want to say, Thank You.
My Prayer for you is this—that your new home is as comfortable and familiar as when
you left it. Always remember the hundreds of loving hands that have helped restore
your home and your life. I ask God to protect you and your house…That you never
have to leave it again—Amen.
I have witnessed
inspiring teamwork
and dedication
Senior Kelsey Evans Leads
Educational Task Force to
Benefit Tanzanian Schools
Kelsey Evans '08 will
serve as the head of a
task force dedicated to
shipping educational
and school-related
supplies to Tanzania.
Early ties are being
established with the
Secondary School for
Maasai Girls in Arusha. Discussion is
under way for taking advantage of the
African Health and Hospitals
Foundation’s (AHHF) existing shipments
of medical equipment by including items
such as pencils, books, clothing and other
educational aids in the extra space in
shipping boxes and containers
(ahhfoundation.org).
Investigations and meetings of the CEO
and Executive Director with members of
the Senegalese and Congolese communities
in St. Louis strongly suggest the
feasibility of this effort, which would take
maximum advantage of existing medical
supply shipments to East Africa.
Kelsey, a senior honors student, will
continue her education at Rockhurst
University. For her 18th birthday last
March, she requested donations to the
AHHF in lieu of gifts, and in April she
held a school supply drive at UA,
collecting needed items for the Secondary
School for Maasai Girls in Arusha.
Christmas Collections
The sophomores held a toy drive,
collecting 650 toys for the Christmas
Store at Whole Kids Outreach in
Ellington, MO, the center of the four
poorest counties of Missouri. The school
also collected 1000 Christmas stockings
that were distributed to low-income
elderly and the homeless through Metro-
Vision Ministries in St. Louis. The UA
service organization Care Bears
sponsored the Warm Hands Warm Hearts
collection and filled over 500 pairs of
gloves with candy for the children of
St. Matthew’s Parish and neighborhood.
Junior Kasey Shelly Speaks About Access to Clean Water
Junior Kasey Shelly (above, right) is actively involved with Airline Ambassadors, an
organization that hand-delivers humanitarian aid and medical care to children in more
than 34 countries (airlineamb.org). The group asked Kasey to represent them at a press
conference held at the United Nations on February 15 to launch a global art
competition hosted by a Spanish organization. The theme of the competition is “Water
For All,” and Kasey briefly spoke on the issue of global access to safe drinking water
and adequate sanitation or lack thereof. Kasey stressed that the first step towards a
solution to this problem is to create awareness among our youth.
This was Kasey's second trip to the United Nations. She attended the UN Global Youth
Summit in August 2007—a five-day gathering of 800 youth from around the
world. At the summit Kasey was presented with the Youth Assembly Award for
Excellence for the work she has done in El Salvador. Kasey and her sister, Stephanie,
an Ursuline freshman, spent their spring break in Guatemala, delivering water
purification systems and sewing machines to a mountain village.
SPLASH Week
SPLASH Week (Students Proudly Lending
A Serving Hand) was held in January and
organized by Student Council. Over 4000
food and baby items were collected to
benefit Nurses for Newborns
(nursesfornewborns.org), and other food
items were donated to Feed My People
(feed-my-people.org) and the St. Cronin
Parish food pantry. Students sold various fundraising items, paid to send friends to the
“Dean’s Detention” during lunch, and held other activities to raise over $10,000 to
benefit the Ursuline Missions.
Serviam Trivia Night
The annual Serviam Trivia Night held on February 16 raised over $8000 which was
split equally to benefit clients of Lydia’s House (lydiashouse.org) and Marian Middle
School graduates attending UA (mms-stl.org).
Cardboard Village
On October 27, 2007, 32 Ursuline students spent the night on the athletic field in UA's
first Cardboard Village. Each student supplied her own cardboard box and was
allowed to bring only what she could carry in one trip. No electronics or food were
allowed, but sandwiches were provided. After spending the coldest night yet of the
season outside, participants celebrated Mass early Sunday morning. The event not
only raised funds to benefit St. Patrick Center, but it also raised students’ awareness of
homelessness. Over $3100 was raised through sponsorship of the students, a
dress-down day, and other donations.

Golf Events Merge in 2009
Typically held in the fall, the UA Golf Classic will move to the spring
when the Women’s Golf Outing traditionally kicks off the golf season.
Next year the two will unite to become one big event with a variety of
options to suit all palettes.
Join us in May 2009 for the ultimate Ursuline Golf Classic at
Whitmoor Country Club in St. Charles, Missouri. All golfers—men
and women—will have the option to play either 18 or 9 holes, and all will meet for dinner,
drinks and the auction afterward. Registration fees will vary, depending on the chosen
course, giving all golfers the opportunity to participate regardless of skill level.
We hope to see you in May 2009 to begin your golf season in style with UA!
To all of our Companions on the Journey, Thank You!
So many members of the Ursuline family have become companions on the journeys of our current and future students by making
gifts to the Parent and Alumnae Annual Giving Campaigns. At the time of publication, the Parent and Alumnae Annual Giving
Campaigns have received over $110,000 and $70,000 in gifts, respectively!
100% of the Ursuline Academy
Board of Trustees financially
donated to UA this fiscal year,
achieving a goal set last September.
The Board—comprised of Ursuline
Sisters, parents, alumnae,
community leaders and UA staff—
donate their time and talents so
generously throughout the year,
and this accomplishment
demonstrates their complete
support for UA. Board members,
thank you for all you do to benefit
the UA family!
The Parent Annual Giving Campaign supports Ursuline’s operating budget—
providing funds for daily expenses such as utilities, supplies and salaries, which
benefits every student in the school and every life that she touches. Tuition alone
($8,900) does not cover the actual costs associated with educating a student at
Ursuline Academy. The current tuition “gap” of $1,566 is filled through the
generous gifts of parents, grandparents, parents of alumnae, and friends to the
Parent Annual Giving Campaign.
The Alumnae Annual Giving Campaign provides tuition assistance to students who
would not otherwise be able to attend Ursuline Academy. Scholarships are awarded
from this fund through the generosity of our alumnae. Over 80 students at UA
receive tuition assistance from this fund.
It is not too late to consider a gift to either campaign! Contributions received by
June 15, 2008 will be acknowledged in the 2007-2008 Annual Report. Use the
Easter Egg Hunt, March 15
86 children in their Easter best enjoyed a morning full of activities, including an Egg
Roll in the gymnasium, face painting by the Clown Club in the Cafe, and, of course,
the hunt itself. Rather than on the Front Campus, the Easter Bunny led the hunt in the
area between the Merici and Brescia buildings where it was less muddy due to recent
heavy rains. The hunt is sponsored by the UA Alumnae Association.
“Shrinky Dink” ornaments with Mrs. Sherman and Clown Club face painting, and
new surprises like the musical cookie walk and storytelling. The new location was
Buona Festa 2008 “Sands “Sands of of Time”
Time”
Thank You for Another Successful Year
The hours of commitment put forth by our Buona Festa
auction chairpersons Dee Baebler, Tina Randazzo-Coan
and Wendy Hotard created a magical evening for Ursuline
alumnae, families and friends to celebrate the Sands of Time.
Our heartfelt thanks go out to each of them for their
dedication and living example of Serviam.
Unique additions to this year’s
Buona Festa came from the many
family and community connections
to UA. Handpainted glasses showcasing
the artistic talents of parents,
students and co-workers added a
decorative touch to the tables.
Under the direction of current
parent Mike Karpowicz, guests
were entertained at the preview
party by the DeSmet jazz ensemble
and enjoyed culinary tastes
provided by the Syberg family. The
melodies provided by The Ladue
High School “Strolling Strings”
were a gracious backdrop as over
150 student volunteers served
dinner to guests, modeled and
Students from UA Today
(the Ursuline broadcast team)
presented their case for donations
to the Fund-a-Need. Funds
acquired will contribute to new
system wiring for better
transmission of the UA Today
daily broadcasts.
Items donated and created by
Ursuline families and attractively
displayed around the gym were
available throughout the night.
Trips to Napa Valley, Hollywood
and Florida drew special attention
but were overshadowed by the
demand for front row seats at
graduation, reserved parking spots
on the UA campus, and a bronze
replica of the statue of St. Angela.
As the tide recedes on the Sands of
Time it leaves the mark of another
successful event—a success attributed
to the generosity of Ursuline
families and friends with their time,
talents and treasures. Whether it
be donors, committee chairpersons
or behind the scene workers, we
could not have done it without you!
Cathie Finley Walker ’61 of Columbus spent a recent
vacation volunteering in San Miguel de Allende,
Mexico with her husband and friends. They began
each morning by going to the Casa de los Angeles
(casadelosangeles.org), a daycare for about 74 young
children, where they helped feed and play with
children until naptime. The Casa is free, but parents
must volunteer one hour a day for each child they have in the facility. In the village it
is common for a single mother to lock her children inside the house while she goes into
the city to make $3-4 a day. The Casa provides a safe and loving alternative for these
children. Visit their website to learn more, donate, or volunteer!
