Investor Report
2019-2020
Building our Brand Transformation
In June 2019, NAUDL unveiled its new brand. The
highlight was a revamped logo, more modern in
its look and in its emphasis of voice over podium.
However, the imagery was only part of a much
greater organizational showcase.

Center Our
Storyline
2
Expand Our Trajectory
of Influence
NAUDL’s role is to illuminate the unique power of
debate and to effectively amplify and celebrate
the work of our partner leagues. Our students’
stories, however, stand as theirs to tell.
NAUDL has advanced its commitment to
connect debate not only to classroom and
campus preparation, but also to professional
development and portable life skills.
Indeed, the new logo was a visual that helped usher in a
shift in the way that we approach and communicate our
mission. What was created as a grassroots organization
that sought to address the gaps of debate interventions in
and around city centers (galvanized by former champion
debaters who knew firsthand the impact of debate),
NAUDL is now a professional leader, steered by a talented
team of experts with long tenures in the education and
non-profit fields. To that end, our brand and message
are now a cohesive system. From our program priorities
to expanding our footprint, all strategies and ideas are
concentrated in several new tenets:
3
Respect
Big Data
4
Align Our
Technical Support
5
Steward Financial Diversity
and Transparency
Understanding the critical function of smart
evaluation and analysis in our efficacy, NAUDL is
committed to ensuring actionable, meaningful and
accessible data is now at the core of our work.
NAUDL’s resources, lessons and tools must
serve a range of organizational settings, so
that they can best benefit our partner leagues,
coaches and students in meeting their goals.
Nothing is more important to NAUDL than the
confidence of our donors in their investment. We
recognize that we must leverage these dollars in
the best ways possible to promote fiscal growth
and sustainability.

Fostering the Bonds of Communication
In 2019, Executive Director Rhonda Haynes
launched a monthly blog series called
“Perspective,” providing relevant reflections on
the debate community and its intersection with
societal and cultural issues.
Topics ranged from the nostalgia of back-to-school and academic heroes to “power
revealed” for the good of the next generation.
One of the more noteworthy posts was a reflection on Urban Debate and the Civil
Rights Movement. This special piece centered around an unforgettable immersion trip
made by NAUDL staff, board members and alumni last June to Montgomery, Alabama –
home of the Equal Justice Initiative Legacy Museum and Memorial. Here is an excerpt:
We covered the spectrum, from
Generation Z and Millennials to Gen
X-ers and Boomers. Our life experiences,
ethnicity and backgrounds varied, but
we all expressed one mutual interest:
connecting and growing from our
shared time in Montgomery.
Together, we realized that objective and so much more. We found the gift of
understanding as we confronted Montgomery’s prominent role in the trafficking of
enslaved people, our nation’s heartless acts of racial terrorism, and a new perspective on
the critical role of advocacy for socially just policies and practices.
We also found understanding in our own personal stories. We demonstrated that
people can have different opinions, political viewpoints, and generational ideals, while
respectfully engaging in open dialogue around highly-complex and pervasive issues.
This was a life-changing experience for all who shared it — and a catalyst to refocus
equity at the heart of NAUDL’s work.
Though we can’t always travel to Montgomery or storied places like it, our pledge is to
facilitate experiences and important discourse in the months ahead – particularly in this
monumental time of both change and unrest for our country, bringing together the
debate, civic and philanthropic communities in a collective way.

Emerging as a Leader
Through Innovation
Showcasing Our Impact
and Evaluation
Over the last few years, NAUDL has worked to
thoughtfully elevate its relationships with our
league partners while leveraging new platforms
to provide strategic direction and critical counsel.
The most novel and comprehensive outcome of this pursuit was the launch of the Teach
Debate online curriculum (housed at www.urbandebate.org). Designed to meet leagues and
coaches “where they are” to reach success, this instructional site delivers:
22
Leagues
702
Schools
• A novice policy debate curriculum with lesson plans aligned with college and career
readiness standards
• Best practice materials and guidelines for leading high-performing leagues and coaches
• Fully searchable, curated extension lesson plans and toolkits (organized by primary skill)
• Introductory learning modules for novice debaters and coaches
• Access to Common Core files for the respective season
• An interactive “community” platform for teachers and coaches to share and inquire about
activities and practices
In its first full year, Teach Debate was utilized by members of all 22 leagues. We are excited
by the initial success of this site and expect that Teach Debate will continue to be a “go-to
resource” for our network.

Not so long ago, NAUDL’s relationship with data
was static, at best.
Today, we have a data-forward approach, with dynamic analysis and concrete collection
methods to serve as building blocks for tracking outcomes, developing new partnerships
and programs, identifying gaps in service, and determining sophisticated opportunity
mapping. Additionally, all leagues now have access to performance dashboards on
league activity, attendance, and participation levels in real time. In collaborating with our
leagues on data and evaluation, NAUDL is able to confidently report on our own strategic
goals and mission alignment, while working to recognize areas of improvement and,
more, to celebrate milestones of success with our partner leagues.

2020 Annual Awards:
A Spirit of Celebration
Debater of the Year
Olivia Northcutt-Wyly
Dallas Urban Debate Alliance | School of Science and Engineering Magnet School
Career Aspiration: Bioethics and Epidemiology
This year, even though we could not convene
together for our marquee spring events, lost due
to the pandemic, we still wanted to celebrate.
Namely, we wanted to find ways to “shine a spotlight” on those who would traditionally be
honored at our Annual Dinner – the 2020 Debater of the Year, 2020 Coach of the Year
and Debater of the Year Finalists, as well as tens of qualifiers for our National Tournament
from leagues across the country. Our continued compliments go to these individuals – we
are proud to have you as such impressive ambassadors of the debate community.
Coach of the Year
Jamelle Brown
Debate! Kansas City | Sumner Academy of Arts & Science
Congratulations to the 2020 NAUDL Coach
of the Year Jamelle Brown. The annual
Coach of the Year Award recognizes an
educator who has dedicated his or her
career to ensuring all students have access
to debate. Ms. Brown is an institution at
Debate! Kansas City, where her level of
commitment over nearly two decades is
unparalleled. She is also a faculty member at
Sumner Academy of Arts & Science.
Mrs. Brown is a shining example of service
and leadership in our league. Our league has
always prioritized making debate a haven
for students, expanding access to the activity
for all students in the urban core.
Olivia Northcutt-Wyly is a 2x NAUDL National Qualifier and seasoned debate champion.
However, Olivia’s passions extend beyond debate — most notably as the founder of
Chronically Gifted, an organization that provides tutoring services for chronically ill children.
That knowledge I was gathering was POWER –
and I knew that, if wielded correctly, I could
make some serious changes.
A longtime coach shares that Olivia’s mature vision, and most resilient personality, have
been vital to the operations of the Dallas league. Through applying the research and
public speaking skills gained through debate, Olivia has created real-time change, both
personally and for the community.

A Season of Determination: 2020 Urban Debate National Championship Qualifiers
A culmination of months of effort and teamwork,
NAUDL is pleased to recognize the qualifiers of
the 2020 Urban Debate National Championship.
Typically the pinnacle of the debate season, qualifying teams for the UDNC must
consist of students who attend the same school and who have competed in at least
three league-sponsored tournaments over the school year. We congratulate all of our
debaters and their coaches on their hard work and dedication in the 2019-20 season.
