2020 Annual Awards:
A Spirit of Celebration
Debater of the Year
Olivia Northcutt-Wyly
Dallas Urban Debate Alliance | School of Science and Engineering Magnet School
Career Aspiration: Bioethics and Epidemiology
This year, even though we could not convene
together for our marquee spring events, lost due
to the pandemic, we still wanted to celebrate.
Namely, we wanted to find ways to “shine a spotlight” on those who would traditionally be
honored at our Annual Dinner – the 2020 Debater of the Year, 2020 Coach of the Year
and Debater of the Year Finalists, as well as tens of qualifiers for our National Tournament
from leagues across the country. Our continued compliments go to these individuals – we
are proud to have you as such impressive ambassadors of the debate community.
Coach of the Year
Jamelle Brown
Debate! Kansas City | Sumner Academy of Arts & Science
Congratulations to the 2020 NAUDL Coach
of the Year Jamelle Brown. The annual
Coach of the Year Award recognizes an
educator who has dedicated his or her
career to ensuring all students have access
to debate. Ms. Brown is an institution at
Debate! Kansas City, where her level of
commitment over nearly two decades is
unparalleled. She is also a faculty member at
Sumner Academy of Arts & Science.
Mrs. Brown is a shining example of service
and leadership in our league. Our league has
always prioritized making debate a haven
for students, expanding access to the activity
for all students in the urban core.
Olivia Northcutt-Wyly is a 2x NAUDL National Qualifier and seasoned debate champion.
However, Olivia’s passions extend beyond debate — most notably as the founder of
Chronically Gifted, an organization that provides tutoring services for chronically ill children.
That knowledge I was gathering was POWER –
and I knew that, if wielded correctly, I could
make some serious changes.
A longtime coach shares that Olivia’s mature vision, and most resilient personality, have
been vital to the operations of the Dallas league. Through applying the research and
public speaking skills gained through debate, Olivia has created real-time change, both
personally and for the community.
