ABOUT THE ART AND CULTURE CENTER/HOLLYWOOD
The Art and Culture Center/Hollywood is a cultural landmark in South Florida for
its contemporary visual arts exhibitions, award-winning arts education programs,
and for the Mediterranean Revival architecture of its circa-1924 building. Through
programs that reflect the highest standards of artistry and diversity, the Center
cultivates creativity and the support of the arts in our community through
education, innovation, and collaboration.
Founded in 1975, the Center is the third oldest arts non-profit in Broward County. It
is one of just nine organizations – out of 350+ cultural entities – to be designated
a Major Cultural Institution by the Broward County Commission as recommended
by the Broward Cultural Council. On average, about 45,000 people attend
exhibitions, performances and community events at a Center venue each year.
The Center galleries present originally curated exhibitions and site activations,
featuring about 200 Florida and national artists annually. Residents and visitors
to our area also enjoy artist receptions, curator tours, artist talks and workshops,
field trips for adult and student groups, fund-raising events, and more. The upstairs
Community Gallery showcases original artworks created by community groups,
and students in K-12 schools and early-learning centers in our region.
The Center makes gallery exhibitions and educational activities accessible to
all populations through Free Arts! Family Days, presented on the third Sunday of
each month. Free Arts! connects families and children through free admission to
the galleries and hands-on activities that encourage education, communication,
cooperation, and fun.
Each summer, the fee-based Summer Arts Camp enrolls more than 200 youth
from 15+ municipalities in Broward and Miami-Dade. With sessions suited for
all skill levels, youth ages 4-18 receive professional instruction in the visual
and performing arts in a fully interactive arts learning environment. Students
develop communication and critical thinking skills as they prepare for a theatrical
performance or exhibition that concludes each camp session.
In 2016, the Center was honored by the Broward Cultural Council for “Exceptional
Service & Outstanding Contributions to Arts Education” in our community. The
Center is a three-time recipient of a Knight Arts Challenge grant from the Knight
Foundation, one of only two Broward cultural organizations to be selected as
frequently for this prestigious grant.
As we continue to serve audiences of all ages and backgrounds, the Center is now
looking ahead to the future expansion of facilities at our city-owned campus at
1650 Harrison Street. In March 2019, residents in the City of Hollywood approved
the Let’s Go Hollywood Ballot Referendum, providing a portion of funding needed
for the construction of new education, performance and gallery spaces.
These new buildings would preserve the historic Kagey Home while enabling the
Center to better serve adults, children and families with programs that foster
creativity and innovation in our community. We welcome this historic opportunity
to work with the City to further develop and finalize site plans with the goal of
creating a cultural destination that serves residents and visitors for decades to
come.
