The Cherub Choir, made upof children ages four to seven provides musiconce a month at the 9 a.m. family service.Our Aeolian-Skinner organ, installed in 1956and updated and enlarged since, supports allthese ministries. While our director of musichas primary responsibility for playing ourorgan, he is assisted by an organ scholar who isa student at Curtis Institute of Music.Restoration of the organ, made possible byan anonymous parishioner’s donation, iscurrently underway and will help support ourmusic program for years to come.In addition to their central role in worship,our music ministries play an important role inthe parish’s outreach work through the FiveFridays concert series. This series includes fiveFriday evening concerts each program year.All proceeds from tickets support our majoroutreach partners.When we speak of music we refer to the11 a.m. service, Evensong, and specialservices. Using music to enhance the worshipexperience at the 9 a.m. service deservesconsideration, as does introducing a widerdiversity of music to attract new members.This ministry has drawn people to St. Paul’sand anchors a very devoted, energizedfollowing. Many COVID-19 related questionsaffect how our music ministries can operate inthe foreseeable future.24
Our music program has been a corestrength of St. Paul’s for decades, yetour parish survey and subsequentcommunity conversations reveal thatsome parishioners question the cost of thisministry relative to others. Our next rectorshould understand the prominence of thisministry in the past and the challenges ofsustaining it as we evolve.We invite you to listen to our choirs andorgan on our website, as well as to exploreour 2020 Easter season’s virtual services,available on YouTube.25
