The Ashton/Soquem team in action. resulted in discovering the diamondiferous Renard kimberlite cluster in Quebec in 2001. Clements, the former vice-president of exploration for Ashton (and now president of Peregrine Diamonds Ltd.), and Lucas (now a consulting geologist active in diamond exploration) led Ashton’s team. Bertrand, now the directeur général of Soquem, was the vice-president of exploration at Soquem at the time of the discovery. These three gentlemen were important advocates for the project through all stages from the original concept by Ashton to the joint venture in 1996 that initiated kimberlite indicator mineral sampling over 25 per cent of Quebec. Exploration of anomalies followed, with the ultimate staking of the Foxtrot property in 2000. The following year, the Renard kimberlites were discovered in three drill holes that are currently the backbone of the mine plans. The willingness of Clements, Lucas and Bertrand to get their hands dirty at the working end of a shovel, collecting and field-screening large indicator mineral samples, and to think outside the box were key in the advancement of this project. Quebec has always been a challenge for diamond explorers due to the large volumes of complex heavy mineral concentrates. In addition, the Renards are atypical kimberlites, differing in mineralogical composition and indicator mineral abundance from many other kimberlites, with an unusually coarse diamond distribution. The discovery team was able to persevere through these challenges and look through geological and mineralogical differences to develop atypical methods to explore and assess the economic potential of this project. In 2007, Ashton was fully acquired by Stornoway Diamond Corporation and the 50/50 joint venture with Soquem continues to advance the Renard diamond mine to production. The Renard project has recently demonstrated the potential to produce approximately 30 million carats of diamonds over a 25-year mine life based on currently defined NI 43-101 indicated and inferred resources and is poised to become Quebec’s first diamond mine. The project has progressed to underground development and collection of a 10,000-tonne bulk sample as well as the commissioning of a 10-tonne-per-hour dense media separation plant. Clements, Lucas and Bertrand, as leaders of the exploration team that discovered the Renard kimberlite cluster and advanced the discovery to the pre-feasibility evaluation stage, are fitting recipients of the 2010 Hugo Dummett Diamond Award.
