8 SPRING 2011 >> MAILBAG EMPHASIZING SURVEYS Just very recently I read the winter issue of Mineral Exploration and in particular the article by Julie Domvile, “Ready to Rock”. While I agree with most of the reasons and initiatives listed, and particularly ‘Aboriginal Agreements’ and training initiatives, which make B.C. an attractive place to explore for minerals, I am surprised that nothing is said about the British Columbia Geological Survey (BCGS) and the world-class mineral database that it has developed and maintains. This glaring omission is made more obvious by the inclusion of “filler reasons” such as ‘Limitless Lifestyle Choices’ which I submit are fringe for this article. Having worked all my life in British Columbia and for more than 30 years with BCGS, formerly the B.C. Department of Mines Geological Branch, I know only too well the quality, volume and importance of the work done for more than a century by this world-class survey, and the impact it continues to have on mineral exploration and discoveries in this mineral-blessed province. Indeed, the current BCGS mineral database which is known worldwide and after which similar databases have been developed in other jurisdictions, was made possible by the provincial mines ministry’s documentation and study of mineral occurrences, properties and districts for well over 100 years. Had the magazine included an article featuring the quality and importance to the mineral industry of the work done by BCGS and the Geological Survey of Canada, it might have helped improve the political view of these surveys.
