The fate of the Cormorant 

Bay Restaurant building near 

Wivenhoe Dam remains in the 

air, following a meeting of the 

Somerset Council Economic 

and Tourism Development subcommittee 

last week. 

Fernvale local Paul Heymans was among 

those in attendance, and he relayed the news 

SEQWater shared about the restaurant during 

a presentation at the meeting. 

“The building needs $500,000 worth of 

renovation just to make it safe. SEQWater has 

advertised the lease twice with no takers, but 

the terms were not very good,” he said. 

“SEQWater is reluctant to spend any money 

on it until they have a new lessee, so anyone 

taking up the lease would have to wait six 

months or so until work has been completed 

before they can open their business there.” 

But while the wait and debate continues, the 

building continues to fall into disrepair, with 

vandals and local wildlife both contributing to 

the damage. 

Though the building is currently owned by 

SEQWater, the group have made it clear the 

core of their business interest is on water 

supply, not tourism. 

“Cormorant Bay was an important tourism 

asset for our region and a great place for locals 

to dine out, hold celebrations and functions, 

take visiting relatives, etc,” Mr Heymans said. 

“Several members of the sub-committee put 

it to the SEQWater representative that we 

don’t actually need another café in Somerset, 

what we need is a great restaurant with 

possibly the best freshwater views in South- 

East Queensland.” 

Discussions about the future of the restaurant 

are expected to continue in future meetings.

After missing this year due 

to COVID-19 restrictions, the 

Somerset Art Beat Festival is set 

for a triumphant return in 2021. 

Showcasing the artistic talents of residents 

throughout the region, the event is a 

showcase of all things creative, from music 

and performing arts to sculpture and painting. 

A final date hasn’t been set for the 2021 

event, but organisers are aiming for some 

time in May, leaving plenty of time for those 

interested in taking part to prepare. 

As preparations begin, organisers are calling 

for a Festival Assistant to join the team. 

This would be a paid, part-time contract from 

mid-January to late-May 2021, with the role 

offering an opportunity to gain paid work 

experience in event and project management, 

and to be mentored by leading arts and 

cultural industry professionals. 

No prior paid event experience is necessary, 

and school leavers or young people 

previously involved in local school or 

community projects, events and volunteering 

are especially encouraged to apply. 

Expressions of interest are also now open for 

Performers, Artists and Stallholders who want 

to take part in the festival.

Wednesday November 11 marked 

102 years since Armistice Day 

1918. The Esk RSL Sub Branch 

held a small service at 11 o'clock – 

the eleventh hour of the eleventh 

day of the eleventh month. 

Due to the COVID 19 restrictions, 

social distance was required by those 

attending the service. 

Stephan Bird, the Esk RSL Secretary, 

welcomed those at the abbreviated 

service and ran the proceedings. 

Father Ian Bailey gave the prayer 

during the service and a benediction 

at the close. Charlie Elwell, President 

of the Esk RSL gave the a short talk 

about the Remembrance Day and how 

it now applies to all service personnel 

in all Australian engagements and not 

just to World War I. As usual Matthew 

Lukritz provided the bugle calls for 

the Last Post, Reveille as well the 

national Anthem. 

During the service only one wreath 

was laid, representing all the branches 

of the defence forces. However 

sometime after it was noted that 

additional wreaths had been laid privately. 

At the close of the short service it was 

announced that this was Charlie Elwell's 

last public involvement with the memorial 

services as he would be standing down as 

President at the next AGM of the Esk RSL Sub 

Branch. Those attending applauded Charlie 

for his service to the Esk community.

More than 100,000 COVID-19 tests 

have been conducted in the West 

Moreton region so far in 2020. 

West Moreton Health Chief Operating Officer 

Matthew Tallis said the milestone passed 

last week was only accomplished due to the 

strong partnership between the region’s 

healthcare providers. 

“The strong test numbers are also a good 

demonstration of the public’s desire to keep 

West Moreton free of COVID,” Mr Tallis said. 

More than one in four West Moreton residents 

have been tested since 1 January 2020 – some 

of them several times. 

The last person to test positive in West 

Moreton was on 15 September. 

Mr Tallis said the demand for testing had 

increased last week due to people returning 

from South Australia where there has been an 

outbreak. 

“The outbreak in some parts of South Australia 

is a reminder that we must remain vigilant and 

continue to practise good hygiene and social 

distancing,” Mr Tallis said. 

Anyone experiencing any COVID-19 

symptoms, no matter how mild, should stay 

home and be tested. The symptoms include a 

fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, 

runny nose, fatigue, loss of taste or smell, 

vomiting or diarrhoea. 

The 100,000 tests were conducted at West 

Moreton Health clinics, the region’s three 

Darling Downs West Moreton PHN clinics (at 

Health Matters Karalee, Flinders Peak Medical 

Centre and Kambu Booval), temporary clinics 

run by Mater Private Hospital Springfield and 

the Queensland Ambulance Service, and the 

region’s general practitioners and private 

pathology laboratories. 

“Of course, the full list of people we have to 

thank is much broader than that,” Mr Tallis 

said. 

“So much work and generosity by so many 

community leaders have contributed to our 

COVID response, including Orion Springfield 

Central shopping centre and the Salvation 

Army at Bundamba who allowed us to set 

up surveillance testing clinics for the general 

public on their premises.”

With Year 12 students throughout 

the region having graduated 

last week, the team from the 

Hazeldean Rural Fire Brigade 

have offered their thanks and 

congratulations to the students 

who have taken an interest in 

firefighting. 

Now more than ever, there is a heightened 

need for new fire fighters in rural regions. 

This time last year, volunteer brigades 

were hard pressed combatting the Jimna, 

Louisavale, and Monsildale fires, with high 

temperatures, low huminidty, and strong 

winds making the task a literal hell for 

firefighters. 

Residents, including firefighters, lost homes 

and livestock in the fires, with waterbombing 

aircraft and crews from outside the region 

moving in to assist with the weeks-long 

battles. 

Though this year has been relatively calm 

on the firefront so far, the effects of climate 

change and global warming mean the 

conditions for more severe fire seasons are 

likely to increase, and the need for more 

firefighters will increase with it. 

Those eager to help defend their areas from 

future fires are encouraged to contact their 

local brigade. 

As part of their secondary schooling, students 

have the opportunity to take on additional 

certifications, with some choosing to train in 

a Certificate II of Public Safety Operations in 

Fire Fighting. 

“We wish you well in the next chapter in 

your life and we will certainly welcome you 

permanently into our Fire Brigade if you 

decide to pursue with the skills you have 

learnt,” the Hazeldean RFB said in a statement. 

“You have been a valuable part of a great 

volunteer organisation. You have worked 

alongside those in a profession that is 

dedicated, respected, valued and necessary. 

Thank you for your voluntary service and for 

being a part of our brigade. Good luck and 

best wishes for your future.”

Dozens of care packages delivered 

to Ipswich Hospital will comfort 

family and friends keeping a 

bedside vigil of a loved one who is 

at the end of their life. 

The Palliative Care Boxes are an initiative of 

Lisa’s Lunches, a volunteer program named 

in memory of Lisa Heuston, who passed away 

at Ipswich Hospital in 2017 after living with 

cancer. 

Palliative Care Nurse Unit Manager Melanie 

McBain said the boxes would be given to 

loved ones who were supporting people 

during end-of-life care at Ipswich Hospital as 

a comforting reminder that they are not alone 

at a significant time in their lives. 

“When people arrive by the bedside of a loved 

one, sometimes they are not prepared to stay 

for long but end up staying 24 or 48 hours, so 

items like toothbrushes, toothpaste and hand 

cream are gratefully received,’’ Ms McBain said. 

“It is very touching for a patient’s supporter to 

think there are people in the community who 

are caring for them at that time – not just their 

families and health workers but people in the 

broader community too.’’ 

Lisa’s Lunches organiser Jacqui Martin said the 

volunteer program, sustained by donations 

from Ipswich residents and the Lisa’s Lunches 

Facebook community, continued Lisa’s legacy 

to support others during tough times. 

Ms Martin, a close former workmate of 

Lisa, said her friend would make lunches 

for teachers to distribute to students who 

went to school without food. When Lisa was 

diagnosed with cancer, her friends decided 

to support her and her family in kind, by 

organising packed lunches for Lisa’s children 

so the family had one fewer burden to carry. 

Ms Martin said the Lisa’s Lunches movement 

continued to grow after Lisa’s death, and they 

have since donated more than 10,000 

lunches to support West Moreton 

families affected by cancer. 

The plan to expand on the Lisa’s 

Lunches venture and support people 

in the Palliative Care Unit was already 

in motion when COVID restrictions 

prompted a fast-tracked response, Ms 

McBain said. 

When hospital visits were restricted 

during the escalated COVID response, 

people visiting the Palliative Care Unit 

were confined to the room of their 

loved one and were unable to share 

communal tea rooms. 

Ms Martin said she put out a call on 

Facebook for assistance in supplying 

the Palliative Care Unit with five 

kettles. 

“Twelve minutes – that’s how long 

it took for supporters to answer 

the request via the Lisa’s Lunches 

Facebook page,” Ms Martin said. 

“We are so grateful to this amazing 

community. No request is ever a 

problem.” 

Now the army of supporters have provided 

donations including toiletries, socks, 

crosswords and adult colouring books, tea 

bags, long-life milk, cereal and snacks for each 

Palliative Care Box.

Users of the Brisbane Valley Rail 

Trail are advised of upcoming 

development works being 

undertaken by the Department 

of Transport and Main Roads, and 

Queensland Urban Utilities, in the 

vicinity of the trail. 

DTMR contractors will be out between Millar 

Road, Fernvale and Muirlea carrying out a 

myriad of works, including removing existing 

step-overs, and widening the trail openings 

at the road crossings. Other minor surface 

improvements will also be conducted at 

various locations along this route. The work 

began on November 16, and is expected to take 

anywhere from four to six weeks. Queensland 

Urban Utilities contractors are also carrying 

out works near the trail section at Vernor as 

part of the Lowood-Fernvale Sewer Upgrade 

project, and development of its new sewerage 

treatment plant. These works are intended to 

be complete by the end of November. While 

the trail will remain open during these works, 

users are advised to exercise caution when 

using these sections of the trail, adhere to 

any warning signage in place, and follow any 

directions given by the workers. 



LETTERS, COMMENT & ANNOUNCEMENTS 

REPLY TO GEOFF MCENTEE’S LETTER ‘MOUNT GLEN ROCK 

RECREATION AND NATIVE PARK’ 

I read Geoff McEntee’s letter in the paper last 

week with interest, but ended up somewhat 

confused. Is he for the Glen Rock park or 

against it? He starts by saying “I welcome the 

development...” and then makes some mostly 

ill-informed assertions in the negative, before 

saying towards the end, “I am certainly very 

positive for the recreation park to progress…”. 

With respect, which is it? 

The beautiful Glen Rock is a great backdrop to 

the very picture-Esk township of Esk, the seat 

of local government in Somerset. It has long 

been the wish of many residents that it should 

be put to better use as a tourism attraction. 

A bit of background might be helpful. 

Business community representatives on the 

Somerset Regional Council Economic and 

Tourism Development sub-committee, led 

by Paul Lawson from Esk Caravan Park and 

supported by other business owners including 

myself, were keen to get the job done. We 

felt it would be a great economic asset for 

the region that would work in well with the 

Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, encouraging tourists 

to come more often and to stay longer. 

We lobbied Somerset Council to employ 

consultants to assess the mountain with a 

view to developing a mountain bike park, 

similar to the internationally renowned ‘Blue 

Derby’ MTB park in Tasmania. 

We recommended they commission a 

report from World Trail Inc (world-trail. 

com), considered to be possibly the best 

trail builders in Australia. They designed and 

constructed the trails in Blue Derby and also 

closer to home at the Spicers Hidden Vale MTB 

park in Grantham owned by Graham 'Skroo' 

Turner, the CEO of Flight Centre. 

I think most people would agree that if ‘Skroo’ 

Turner thinks a mountain biking park is a 

good investment, then we should all sit up 

and take notice. 

Council acted on our advice and the report 

they commissioned gave the site a thumbs 

up. The proximity to Esk with its many cafes, 

pubs and accommodation options made 

it a winner from an economic perspective 

and the mountain itself provides some great 

opportunities for recreational activities. 

Geoff McEntee questions why the new 

acquisition has been named ‘Mount Glen 

Rock Recreation and Nature Park’ and not 

‘Glen Rock MTB Park’. Good question, Geoff. 

The intention is that the park will offer a 

wide range of recreational opportunities for 

different user groups – walkers, runners and 

horse riders as well as mountain bikers, just as 

the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail does. 

Would the money be better spent on roads

tapping and your heart racing as they present

than a recreational area as Geoff suggests? 

Well, $1.28 million doesn’t buy much road 

(actually $1.3 million) , but it does buy quite 

a lot of mountain bike park, and whilst roads 

cost money, mountain bike parks generate 

money that can then be used to build roads. 

Capitalism at work. 

Geoff might also be relieved to know that 

much of funding is in the form of grants 

from the Federal and State governments to 

help rebuild our local economy post-COVID 

lock-down, so not such a big impost on the 

ratepayers after all. 

I recommend that Geoff and any other 

members of the community who have an 

interest in this development do a Google 

search for ‘Blue Derby’ and check out the 

YouTube videos and the link to ‘The Derby 

Story’ on the www.ridebluederby.com.au 

website, It gives a great account of how the 

mountain bike park revitalised a dying timber 

town not dissimilar to Esk and transformed 

it into a vibrant tourism hub that brings in 

tourist dollars from all over Australia. 

In terms of the ROI that Geoff refers to, the 

investment in the Blue Derby trails was $3.1 

million and the return on the investment has 

been approx. $30 million. Glen Esk is different, 

but nonetheless there is enormous potential. 

Geoff is critical of the fact-finding mission 

approved by Council. I think it’s an excellent 

idea for members of Council to visit Blue 

Derby to learn from Dorset Council what 

worked and what are the pitfalls. 

Learning from the experience of others is 

never wasted and could save Council a heap 

of money in the long term. 

However, I do think it would be useful for 

them to take a member of the community 

with a lifetime of experience riding bikes with 

them. 

It would be a tough gig, but I’d be only too 

happy to volunteer my services (just joking). 

People often complain that our Council is not 

innovative enough, yet here they are being 

innovative and people still complain. 

Somerset Council is to be congratulated 

on their investment in a great asset for our 

region that will increase property values and 

generate new jobs for our young people. 

Let’s not forget there was fierce opposition to 

the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail and look at it now. 

I’m confident Mount Glen Rock Recreation and 

Nature Park will be a winner for our region. 

Let’s all get behind this great project.

DWELLING DESPAIR 

I write with reference to Nathan Greaves’ 

article in the November 4 edition of “The 

Somerset” concerning the non-compliant 

dwelling in Hazeldean. As stated in the 

article, the issue of this dwelling and its noncompliance 

with council building codes has 

been ongoing since 2002, initially with Kilcoy 

Shire council and subsequently with Somerset 

Regional Council post-amalgamation. Luke 

Hannan, the shire’s director of Planning and 

Development, acknowledges these issues 

have been on council’s radar for many years, 

yet it would appear previous council action 

has been ineffective in rectifying the situation. 

During our time living in Hazeldean we have 

seen the subject property change from an 

uninhabited dwelling on an overgrown 

allotment, to an inhabited dwelling in a state 

of dangerous disrepair, surrounded by everincreasing 

amounts of rubbish and derelict 

vehicles. However, the visual pollution is 

of secondary concern to the knowledge 

that council is powerless to take effective 

action with regard to the acknowledged 

health and safety issues that the dwelling 

poses for both the current resident and the 

immediate neighbours. It’s stated there is 

no working sewerage/septic system, yet this 

is on occupied land in the water catchment 

area for Somerset Dam. Despite no grazing 

animals being kept on the property, money 

has recently been spent on extensive fencing 

of the block. It is puzzling as to why this 

money has not been spent on the essential 

rectification works on the house as prescribed 

by council. 

Councillor Jason Wendt is quoted as 

expressing sympathy for the neighbours and 

that “everyone’s got someone like this living 

near them”. The crux of the matter is that there 

should not be anyone living in the dwelling 

at all in its current state! Yes, it’s an eyesore, 

but the petition referenced in the article did 

not request council to “go in and clean it up 

for them” - it requested that council take 

effective action in enforcing its regulations to 

have the dwelling made compliant in order 

for it to be habitable. No timeframes have 

been mentioned for essential works to be 

completed on this dwelling, but it appears 

council has few powers in enforcing these 

anyway – the owner’s history of apparent 

success in ignoring deadlines shows this. In 

the meantime, the resident is permitted to 

continue to live in the house, along with all 

its health and safety issues. Who then holds 

the power here – the council or the residents?

FREE TRIP TO TASMANIA - BY BIKE. 

It was great to read the letter from Mr McEntee 

re Mt Glen Rock - a timely interdiction! The 

Somerset Council tendered for a tourism 

strategy in late 2019, delayed its start, and 

used Covid to delay its delivery until possibly 

2021 - yet in just weeks Council can spend 

$400k plus on real estate, get grants to have 

reports written, pull a consultants report out 

of a hat, and approve a $10,000 Tasmanian 

junket for councillors and council staff. 

Really? This unseemly haste to increase their 

deficit further underscores their less than 

effective services and certainly expenditure 

that creates unaffordable rates! 

Firstly it would seem obvious that you don't 

spend money on tourism infrastructure like 

Mt Glen Rock without a guiding tourism 

strategy. Maybe that's because Council has 

already decided the easiest tourism strategy 

is just "bikes and boats" and Council doesn't 

really care what local residents and businesses 

think and would like out of tourism. It's 

interesting when you consider that despite 

the profile it enjoys, the rail trail attracts less 

than 1% of visitors to the region. 

Secondly is the nature of the Somerset Council 

junket to Tasmania. The Blue Derby is a worldclass 

85 km trail with spectacular old-growth 

forests, a range of 4-5 star accommodation 

options, fine dining restaurants, and 

numerous non-biking activities. 

Somerset Council is trying to make a silk 

purse out of a run down one hill and up 

another, across a busy highway and a plastic 

bridge with very few accommodation 

options, and one stand alone restaurant 

in the entire valley. The Somerset tourism 

website, Experience Somerset, can list only 

seven Outdoor Adventures and two of them 

aren't even in Somerset!! 

The local Dorset Council spent over $3million 

to build 85 km of world class mountain bike 

trails - not rail trails they inherited and then 

wanted to cover in concrete. Maybe while 

Somerset Council is on this junket to Dorset 

Council they could also ask them about 

their other initiatives to build business and 

tourism such as: Dorset Council waives all 

approval fees for businesses; Dorset Council 

doesn’t charge an annual food registration 

licence fee; Dorset Council gives new small 

businesses rate rebates; AND Dorset Council 

gives expanding businesses rate rebates. 

Thirdly just to clarify the numbers, The Blue 

Derby opened in 2014 and the CEO of the

local Dorset Council told the ABC that it is 

worth $15-$18 million dollars in economic 

impact - not $30 million. 

The BVRT is an important part of tourism in the 

Brisbane Valley - but it is just one aspect. Mt 

Glen Rock could be a great recreation reserve 

and join the list of parks featured as tourist 

attractions in Somerset. However spending 

$1.3million on a whim, with no strategy, no idea 

of future costs and improvements, no targets 

or measures of success, and no undertaking on 

how to improve the overall tourism offer that is 

needed, suggests the Council is flailing. There 

IS another side to what should be a public 

discussion BEFORE the money is spent - readers 

can Google "Minutes from the Mountain Bike 

Trails Forum" to understand the concerns other 

communities like St Helens have raised on this 

issue.

For 29 years, Alexis FitzGerald and 

her Esk Community Choir have 

been heralding the joys of the 

season with their Annual Family 

Christmas Concert. 

With 2020 being the ‘year of Covid 19 

cancellations’ and with restrictions now 

somewhat reduced, the choir certainly has 

something wonderful to sing about as they, 

along with special guests, ‘Sunshine Brass’ and 

a whole host of quality entertainment from 

the Choir and School Band, once again bring 

to the Somerset Civic Centre the true meaning 

of Christmas. 

This concert has been nine months in its 

construction, rehearsals at the outset having 

been snatched with small groups in line with 

Covid 19 protocols. With the recent latitude 

towards allowed numbers, rehearsals have recommenced 

in full at the Esk State School Hall 

and anyone passing the on a Tuesday evening 

will know that with their ‘socially distanced’ 

seat in the Civic Centre on Sunday December 

6, they will be in for an afternoon of sublime 

entertainment commencing at 2.30pm.

LCG – the Linville Community 

Garden, which were launched 

by Somerset Mayor Cr Graeme 

Lehmann on Saturday 21 

November at a special ceremony 

as part of a weekend of festivities 

in Linville. 

The launch on Saturday included a large 

crowd of locals and visitors from far and 

wide. It revealed the amazing new entry 

gates designed by international artist, Merton 

Chambers, working in collaboration with 

Gatton -based blacksmith and arts identity 

Kim Duff of Ironic Art fame. The work was made 

possible through a RADF grant from Somerset 

Regional Council. The two artists’ stunning 

creation sets the tone for a magnificent 

community garden plan 

to be implemented over 

the next two years. Titled 

Growing Together, it 

indicates the ambition 

of the Linville Progress 

Association, the group 

responsible for the 

development of the 

Linville Community 

Garden, to see Linville’s 

future confirmed and 

to enhance its status 

as a tourist destination 

in Queensland. A 

significant amount of 

preparatory work has 

already been done by 

hard-working team 

of Linville community 

volunteers. 

The launch was followed 


on Sunday morning by a unique Breakfast 

in the grounds of the Garden, followed by 

an incredible performance in the hall by 

members Camerata, one of Queensland’s 

unique orchestral groups. The group 

included well known Queensland actor, 

Barbara Lowing, whose family hailed from 

Toogoolawah. She was delighted to take 

the poetry reading part of the performance 

and intends to return for another visit to the 

region very soon. So do other members of the 

orchestra who were given a standing ovation 

at the end of their performance. Camerata 

CEO, Adam Tucker, is keen to have further 

talks with the Linville Progress Association 

and Toogoolawah & District History Group 

about more performances in the region in 

2021 so watch this space.

After months of delays and 

preparation, the Fernvale markets 

finally made a triumphant 

return over the weekend, with a 

strong turnout for their official 

reopening. 

Dozens of stallholders, vendors, and 

suppliers – seasoned veterans and new 

sellers alike – turned out at the Fernvale State 

School grounds on Sunday, 

November 22, where plenty 

of eager visitors came to greet 

them. 

Some of those in attendance 

were understandably 

disappointed to find less stalls 

than usual, especially in the 

area of fresh produce, but 

there was still plenty to see, 

do, eat, and buy throughout 

the morning. 

For younger visitors, there 

was even a petting farm with 

a range of furry and feathered 

creatures to interact with, 

from ducks and geese to

Rural Fire Brigade raffle draw on 

Sunday November 22. 

After many months of fundraising to support 

such a fantastic team who go above and 

beyond to protect our beautiful region from 

extreme dangers, the team from the Esk Club 

Hotel would like to thank the local community, 

travellers to the region that supported our 

raffle in aid of raising funds for the Somerset 

Rural Fire Brigade. 

Esk Club Hotel has been raising funds for our 

local Rural Fire Brigades but we wouldn’t be 

able to do this without the support from our 

locals. Who supported and kindly donated 

prizes for the draw. 

What a wonderful community we call home. 

On Sunday we had the pleasure of drawing 

the raffle with the help of executives from the 

Rural Fire Brigade. 

The first prize, kindly donated by Royce from 

Retrees was a handmade coffee table. Royce 

produces amazing fine furnishings, with his 

coffee table adored by many thanks to his 

skilled craftmenship. Peter Booker took out 

goats and calves. 

Organisers said their hope was that more fruit 

and vegetable sellers would be available at 

future market days, while also mentioning 

that vehicle issues and other circumstances 

had forced some sellers to miss the reopening 

event. 

They also offered their thanks to the volunteers 

who’d contributed to help run the event. 

The Fernvale Markets will be on every Sunday, 

from 6am to midday, with all profits going 

towards the Fernvale State School P&C 

Association.

tell Queenslanders his party 

will reverse its opposition to 

a Collinsville power station 

feasibility study if he’s serious 

about its support for coal and gas. 

Minister for Resources, Water and Northern 

Australia Keith Pitt says the threat of Labor to 

the resources industry can’t be undone by a 

few friendly words from Senator Watt. 

“Reports that the Senator will tell a 

Queensland conference that Labor has seen 

the light on coal and gas confirm the division 

within the party,” Minister Pitt said. 

“It’s a cynical attempt to claw back votes 

in Queensland and to keep rogue MP Joel 

Fitzgibbon quiet. 

“The real test is whether Senator Watt would 

stand beside Mark Butler in Adelaide or Mark 

Dreyfus in Melbourne and make a similar procoal 

speech. 

“We all know that’s not going to happen 

anytime soon,” Minister Pitt said. 

“Senator Watt has been a vocal opponent 

of the Government keeping an election 

commitment to fund a feasibility study for 

a coal fired powered station in regional 

Queensland. 

“If he’s serious about Labor’s new found 

support for coal and gas, he should support 

the study which could lead to hundreds of 

new regional jobs.”

The Toogoolawah & District 

History Group held its last 

general meeting for 2020 at the 

Toogoolawah Hotel on Tuesday 

November 17 which was followed 

by a Christmas lunch to say thankyou 

to all our volunteers. 

It has been a very strange year but, despite 

that, we have achieved a great deal. Between 

February and November and despite three 

hard months of lockdown, we had three 

inspiring guest speakers on topics from 

the real History of the Golden Casket in 

Queensland by respected historian Carmel 

Black in February, across to June, when author 

Thea Hayes amazed us with her stories of rural 

nursing and more, then the AGM in October 

when the Committee were all re-elected. 

The Group finished the year with a discourse 

from one of Australia's living legends, author 

Everald Compton, who spoke to us about his 

latest book, Dinner with the Founding Fathers. 

He made us think and made us laugh. Our 

Federal MP Hon Shayne Neumann was also 


on hand and did the Vote of Thanks. He knows 

Everald well and did him proud. Copies of this 

amazing book are on sale at the Toogoolawah 

History Museum so pop in anytime between 

10 AM and 2PM from Thursday to 

Saturday to secure your copy. Everald 

is donating $5 to the History Group, 

from the sale of each book sold at the 

Museum. The book sells for $20 per 

copy. Every school library should have 

one. 

Another great 2020 achievement 

was the design and erection of two 

beautiful railway murals on the 

walls of the storage shed beside the 

Museum. Jeff and Winnie Fields from 

Academy Printing did all the work 

with support from several of our 

volunteers on the day they went up. 

It is proving extremely popular with 

tourists. Support from the BVRT Users 

Association through two key catering 

jobs also enabled us to maintain our 

financial viability and we hope that our 

fund-raising will be topped off with a 

Raffle Street Stall outside the IGA on 

Thursday 24 December. So, when you 

are doing your last-minute shopping, do stop 

and give us some support. Our community is 

our greatest strength. We have some great 

plans for 2021 so watch this space.

– HOW TO GET HELP 


Following a rise in cases of 

dehydration from users on 

the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, 

including one serious incident, 

the trail’s Users Association is 

urging people to stay on top of 

their fluid intake. 

Dehydration and heatstroke can occur quite 

quickly in hot environments and through 

strenuous activity, both of which often go 

hand-in-hand on the Rail Trail. 

Fluid can be lost through sweat, with tight 

clothing or unnecessary layers making it 

harder for the sweat to evaporate, leading to 

a loss of fluid and higher body temperatures. 

Feeling thirsty, tired, hot, faint, or having 

headaches are strong indiciators that 

something may be wrong, and it’s 

recommended that trail users drink plenty 

of water, use sunscreen, wear loose-fitting or 

lightweight clothes than breathe easily, and 

stop to rest in shady areas when necessary. 

Using the trail in pairs or groups rather than 

trekking alone is also beneficial, as this will 

mean others are on-hand to assist in the event 

of heat stress or other emergencies, such as a 

fall or snakebite.

relation to the identity of the offender who 

is likely to be male and alone at the time of 

the offence. We also request community 

members with vehicle dashcam footage 

that may have been in the vicinity of 

Dingyarra Street Toogoolawah (between 

the Brisbane Valley Hwy and Cressbrook 

Street Toogoolawah and between the 

hours of 6pm and 8pm) to review any 

footage they may have and report to us 

if any footage is available of a single male 

person in the area at the time.

are a locally based group of 

professional musicians who 

play in various bands but come

On the weekend of the 29th February 

and 1st March 2020, the Esk Campdraft 

Association held its first youth camp at the 

Esk Showgrounds. 36 junior and juvenile 

riders were dived into four groups where 

they covered a range of skills ranging from 

dry work, to positioning on cattle inside and 

outside the camp, as well as practice runs 

on cattle. The kids were lucky enough to 

practice on beautiful Friesian heifers donated 

by Woodbank dairy and the Gault family, as 

well as cows kindly donated by treasurer Jim 

Kruger. 

Youth riders were mentored by a group of 

fantastic coaches consisting of; Karen Butters, 

Luke McEwan, Mark Sherlock and Mark 

Gellhar. This amazing group of people, as well 

as several local volunteers, gave their time and 

wisdom. It was a pleasure to watch every rider 

progress and improve over the course of the 

weekend. Several guest speakers were present 

over the two days, including a nutrition talk on 

the Saturday

ESK CAMPDRAFT YOUTH CAMP 

TOOGOOLAWAH BOWLS 

In addition to the inaugural camp, Sunday 

saw the handover of the association’s title 

of patron. Jim Copley, who has been patron 

for many years and whose service has been 

muchly appreciated, handed over the title 

to much valued committee member John 

Drynan. John has been in involved with the 

club for over 34 years and he accepted the 

title in a short ceremony on Sunday. 

The committee led by President Toni Webster, 

considered the camp a great success and are 

excited to follow all riders on their campdraft 

careers. Special thanks go to the events 

sponsors; Me-Cow, Campdraft Connect and 

John Jones as well as all volunteers over the 

weekend. A special thanks to Jenny Wright 

and Debra Gelhaar for their massive effort in 

the canteen keeping everyone fed. 

The Esk campdraft committee will be holding 

its AGM on 29th November 2020 at 1 pm at 

the Grand Hotel Esk, and looks forward to this 

becoming an annual event. 

Wednesday November 18 Keith McWhirter, Colleen Heath and Gerrit Winkeler travelled 

to Woodford for their Triples Day and managed to become First Round Winners. The team 

thoroughly enjoyed the day. Thanks for the invite Woodford. 

Thursday November 19 at home, we only had 6 players who played a Triples Game. No 

winners on the day as the game was a draw. Raffle was won by Lyn McWhirter. 

Also on Thursday We sent a team to Caboolture Lakes for two games of 2 Bowl Triples. Not 

good enough on the day but a good time was had by all. 

Sunday November 22. We only had 5 players on a very hot day who played 18 ends. Winners 

on the day were Ian Bradow, John Greany and Gerrit Winkeler.

Good turnout for our annual Wyatt Memorial Day. With a 4 person count back for the win, 

Captain Shaun had a big job on sorting that lot out, with Jonno coming out on top to take 

first prize, Rude getting R/UP spot, bad luck for Lyle and Heinz just missing out, but getting 

a ball in the run down with Terry, Luke and Fred. Janet taking the Ladies prize, Fay getting R/ 

UP spot and the pin shot. People remarked that Julie Lee missed out, but Cameron picked 

out her name to win the raffle so she still managed to get a mention. A top day with over 30 

players in attendance, many thanks to Cameron for providing all the prizes, good to keep 

the Wyatt name going as his father was a valuable member of the club for many years. Lyle 

even remarked that Camerons Mum and Dad were present at his wedding ( a long time ago )

Hi there Somerset, 

The above headline got my attention in a 

fitness magazine a while back. Let’s face it 

we all want to look and feel younger. So I 

bought the magazine expecting it to be 

either about skin care products, nutrition or 

keeping out of the sun. Well I was wrong. 

It was about posture. 

It was one of the most enlightening articles I 

had read for a long while and then obviously 

started my research. Somerset, please 

remember I have a Diploma in Fitness and 

also Cert IV as a Personal Trainer so I am not 

a GP, physio therapist or similar. So if you 

are concerned about your posture please 

discuss with a health professional (we have 

visiting ones at Kilcoy) Sadly at the gyms 

we see far too many people who’s posture 

it shocking. When I first started in the 

industry it was only seniors but now I see 

young people slouched over and in really 

bad posture form (mainly due to devices 

and leaning over them) Their future is not 

looking great – this will lead to all health 

issues in their future. 

Do This For Me Please! 

Stand with your heels touching the wall. 

Your tailbone, shoulder blades and the back 

of your head should be able to touch the 

wall. 

Now Lift your arms above your head so that 

the back of your hands are resting against 

the wall (arms straight) Can you do that 

without losing those contact points? If 

you are losing your balance – that’s a core 

strength issue also. Don’t understand this, 

just pop into see me. 

If you couldn’t do this, its not going to get 

better unless you work at it. We have some 

great machines and exercises to correct this. 

Its never too late. 

We also have visiting allied health here who 

specialise in very bad posture – Healthy 

Lifestyle Australia, Body Plus Physio (every 

Thurs) and Allied Aged Care. Our Cert 

IV Instructors can help you also with the 

correct exercise program to counteract this. 

Also remember your head weighs about 

10lbs, so once you start going forward 

into bad posture, your head weight makes 

it even harder to correct. And remember 

certain sports, activities, occupations and 

everyday stuff can make your posture even 

worse. 

I will write more about posture next week 

because its important to walk talk, sit 

straight and sleep well. 

Try This Fix At Home 

Every time you walk through a doorway, 

reach your hands up high to touch the top 

of the door frame, pause to a few seconds if 

you have time. Imagine you have a magnet 

in your head and its drawing you up towards 

the door frame. If you do this every time you 

go into another room, you will be amazed 

how tall you feel, how your breathing opens 

up and how you start correcting this ageing 

issue. 

So guys sit up straight now whilst you read 

the rest of this paper.
