NEW
TESTING
CLINIC FOR
LOCKYER
LOCALS
NATHAN GREAVES
nathan@thelockyer.com.au
Building upon its history of
hosting temporary clinics,
the Gatton Hospital last week
became the site of a new full-time
COVID-19 testing clinic.
The clinic will be open every weekday from
8am until noon, with PCR and Rapid Antigen
Tests being made available to eligible walkins
from a dedicated tent located off William
Street.
Those tests are becoming more readily
available, West Moreton Health have warned
that there may still be a wait period during
peak times, and are advising that those who
attend the clinic bring water, and not arrive
during the last hour of testing.
NEW RULES
TO PROTECT
EMERGENCY
SERVICE
WORKERS
NATHAN GREAVES
nathan@thelockyer.com.au
In an effort to help protect frontline
and emergency workers on the
roads, the State Government are
moving to bring new rules and
fines into effect in the near future.
While drivers are already expected to slow
down and pull over for emergency vehicles
driving on the roads, the new rules will require
drivers to also slow down and give a wide
berth to emergency vehicles that are parked
on the roadside, reducing the risk of injury to
frontline workers.
“Drivers will need to slow down or change
lanes when passing a stationary vehicle with
flashing lights,” Transport Minister Mark Bailey
said.
“This includes ambulances, police cars, fire
trucks, tow trucks and breakdown assistance
vehicles to protect anyone working by the
roadside from vehicles travelling at high
speeds.”
Mr Bailey said many motorists exercised safe
driving already around emergency vehicles
but this rule change would make it clear to all
how to pass an emergency scene.
“We need to help create a safer work
environment for our first responders and
emergency service workers,” he said.
“The likelihood of a serious injury or fatality
increases significantly as vehicle speeds
increase so we are aiming to reduce that risk
as much as possible.”
The exact amount for fines has yet to be
determined, but will be comparable to other,
similar offences.
NEW SUBSIDY PROGRAM
FOR BAITS
NATHAN GREAVES
nathan@thelockyer.com.au
The Lockyer Valley Regional Council have voted to take a new
approach to how they provide baits and poisons to landowners,
following changes in legislation.
In the past, the LVRC provided a program where baits were allocated directly to those
wishing to use them, but the council’s Pest Officers repeatedly ran into problems with
people not doing the right thing with the poisons, posing a risk to the lives of other people
and animals.
With the altered legislation now forcing the LVRC to take on all of the costs, risks, and
liabilities that were previously covered by Biosecurity Queensland, the decision was made
last week to discontinue the baiting program.
To continue assisting landowners who wish to use baits and poisons, the LVRC will instead
be offering a new financial subsidy program, allowing Lockyer Valley residents to secure
regulated S7 poisons at a reduced cost.
THE LOCKYER - Wednesday February 2, 2022 - Page 2
Two passionate volunteers
have been recognised for their
dedication to the community,
receiving top gongs at this year’s
Lockyer Valley Australia Day
ceremony.
Gatton’s Doreen Sabburg was awarded the
2022 Lockyer Valley Citizen of the Year, while
Lockrose’s Chantelle Grief was bestowed
Young Citizen of the Year during a formal
ceremony at Gatton Shire Hall this morning.
For more than 64 years, Doreen has
volunteered at the Peace Lutheran Church,
and her long association with the Ladies
Women’s Guild stretches back to the early
1950s.
Well known and highly respected in the
community, Doreen has dedicated her life
to helping others and epitomises the values
of Citizen of the Year, Lockyer Valley Mayor
Tanya Milligan said.
“This is such a fitting recognition for Doreen,
Pictured above: All the nominees for the 2022 Lockyer Valley Australia Day Awards.
LOCKYER VALLEY AUSTRALIA DAY RECIPIENTS
ANNOUNCED & RECOGNISED
who has spent more than half a century
selflessly giving her time and assisting others
in the community - and she shows no signs of
slowing down!” Mayor Milligan said.
She also touched on Doreen’s national pride.
“Doreen is a great supporter of community
events, attending every Australia Day awards
ceremony fully kitted out in Australia gear,
which makes bestowing this award on her
today even more special.”
Just like Doreen, Chantelle is always willing
to lend a hand and help others in need,
volunteering her time at a Laidley animal
rescue, Riding for the Disabled and NAIDOC
and Multicultural Festival events.
Mayor Milligan said the teen - who is also an
active member of the Plainland 2nd Light
Horse and 139th Army Cadets - had made
the community proud, not only through her
impressive volunteering efforts but also her
sporting prowess.
“Chantelle was the first multiclass athlete
from the Lockyer to compete at the Pacific
School Games in 30 years,” she said.
“She was only 13 years old at the time,
winning a silver medal at the Pacific School
Games in 2018.
“Chantelle is a fantastic role model that others
in the community can aspire to.”
Several other awards were presented to
deserving recipients during the official
Australia Day ceremony, including the
prestigious Mayoral Award.
This year, the Mayor’s choice went to local
icon and businesswoman, Valerie Vaughan.
Mayor Milligan said it gave her great pleasure
to announce Valerie as the recipient of
the award, which recognises a community
member who has achieved great things for
others.
“Valerie is a highly valued member of our
community, raised on the land as a child
where an understanding of country values
was planted and nurtured,” she said.
“Her compassion, kindness and exceptional
service is legendary in Gatton and she has
touched many lives over the years, often
opening her chemist before and after
business hours to those in need, and generally
going above and beyond for our community.
“If there’s a community event or something
good for the town, or even a problem that
requires attention, Valerie would likely be
there.”
COUNCIL, SQCC PARTNER FOR AUSTRALIA DAY RECIPIENTS
Lockyer Valley Regional Council’s
2022 Australia Day recipients
were gifted a stunning timber
wall plaque to mark their
achievements, all thanks to
the expertise of the women
at the Southern Queensland
Correctional Centre (SQCC).
Council and SQCC have once again joined
forces in this yearly tradition, all to the benefit
of this year’s recipients.
Lockyer Valley Mayor, Councillor Tanya
Milligan said Council engaged the expertise
of the women, who were involved in
designing and creating this year’s gifts for
the awards, which took the place of the usual
medallions.
“The wall plaques were very well received
by the recipients and their families at the
2022 Australia Day Award and Citizenship
Ceremony.
“The plaque can be displayed proudly in
their homes or place of business and will no
doubt serve as a reminder of the significance
of their awards.
“It really demonstrates what a great
partnership we have as a Council with the
women at the prison.
“Working with community organisations is
a passion for us as a Council and something
we’re constantly looking to build on.
“Partnerships such as these bring extensive
benefits to both the community and Council
and this is a perfect example of that,” Mayor
Milligan said.
throughout the consultation
period.
“The Lakes Precinct is a popular
location for both locals and
visitors, so it was a timely
opportunity check in with our
community about what they
would now like to see for the
future – and capture that for
proper future planning and
preservation.
“We will certainly consider how
we can use the community’s ideas
to inform a brighter, more resilient
future at the Lakes Precinct,”
Mayor Milligan said.
THREE NEW ROAD
NAMES FOR THE REGION
NATHAN GREAVES
nathan@thelockyer.com.au
The Lockyer Valley Regional Council have approved
three new names for roads in the Plainland Crossing
area.
Only one of the three names under consideration is for a new road, with
one being a change to an previously-approved road, and the other being
a correction due to the same name mistakenly being approved for both
the Plainland Crossing and Fairways Park estates.
Developers normally provide multiple suggestions, in order of preference,
for road names, which are then cross-checked with existing roads in the
region.
In this case, the first preference for each of the three roads were found
to be acceptable, with Road 1 being named Isaac Court, Road 2 being
designated Derwent Street, and Road 3 being approved as Balonne Street.
for a major upgrade, and members of the community are invited to
have their say.
The Department of Transport and Main Roads are beginning consultations for upgrades to
Gatton-Helidon Road, including the local council and wider community.
The project will involve safety improvements such as road widening, the removal of roadside
pavement.
Members of the community can learn more about the upgrades, and have their say on possible
options, by visiting tmr.qld.gov.au/projects/gatton-helidon-road-pavement-widening.
The current phase of the project is consultation-only, with an estimated $4 million needing to
THE LOCKYER - Wednesday February 2, 2022 - Page 6
Cobb & Co was the name used by many
successful sometimes quite independent
Australian coaching businesses.
The first was established in 1853 by American
Freeman Cobb and his partners.
The name Cobb & Co grew to great
prominence in the late 19 th century, when it
was carried by many stagecoaches carrying
passengers and mail to various Australian
goldfields, and later to many regional and
remote areas of the Australian outback.
The same name was used in New Zealand
and Freeman Cobb used it in South Africa.
Although the Queensland branch of the
company made an effort to transition to
automobiles in the early 20 th century, high
overhead costs and the growth of alternative
transport options for mail, including rail and
air, saw the final demise of Cobb & Co.
The last Australian Cobb & Co stagecoach ran
in Queensland in August 1924.
Cobb & Co has become an established part
of Australian folklore commemorated in art,
literature and on screen.
Today the name is used by a number of
Australian bus operators.
The original Cobb & Co was established
in Melbourne in 1853 at the height of
the excitement created by the Victorian
goldrushes by four newly arrived Americans
– Freeman Cobb, John Murray Peck, James
Swanton and John B. Lamber.
At first they traded as the “American Telegraph
Line of Coaches,” a name that emphasized
speed and progressiveness.
With financial support from another newly
arrived US businessman George Train, they
arranged the importation of several US-built
wagons and Concord stagecoaches.
By early 1854 Cobb & Co operated a daily
service to Forest Creek and Bendigo and,
soon afterwards, expanded the service to
Geelong and Ballarat and other goldfields.
Cobb & Co’s horses were changed at stages
every 10–15 miles along a stagecoach “line”
often at inns or hotels that could also cater for
the needs of drivers and passengers.
As historian Susan Priestley notes, “Coach
lines did not attempt to compete with...
railways.
Instead, as rail lines extended, coaches
were transferred to feeder routes and were
timetabled to link in with trains.”
Within a few years, Cobb & Co had established
reliability, although they had not won any of limited liability company with a capital of
In May 1856, the four partners sold out. In 1871 the formal links between the
Cobb and Lamber returned to the US while Victorian Cobb & Co (taken over by Robertson
Swanton continued in coaching for a few and Wagner) and Rutherford’s New South
Rutherford re-organised and extended the use the trading name Cobb & Co.
Victorian services and won a monopoly on The fare was about £5 per day with an
major mail contracts.
Rutherford moved ten coaches from Bendigo network of coach routes.
to Bathurst with great publicity to announce Through the later 19 th century travel by Cobb
and establish Cobb & Co’s presence.
& Co coach was increasingly romanticized
Bathurst became the headquarters of a new in literature but when Henry Lawson wrote
Rutherford established a Cobb & Co buggy The nationalistic art, music and writing of
Services soon expanded into all parts Carrying cash and gold, coaches were
communities were able to maintain regular Everingham notes that Cobb & Co’s expansion
contact with the rest of the world.
into New South Wales coincided with an
TALK
increase in the number of armed hold-ups by
bushrangers.
At least nine coaches were attacked in the
Bathurst district in the seven months after the
company established itself there.
Tom Roberts, a key member of the Heidelberg
School, painted “Bailed Up” (pictured below)
near Inverell in 1895 modelling the figures
on “local townspeople including (Cobb & Co)
stagecoach driver ‘Silent Bob Bates’ who had
been held up by local bushranger Captain
Thunderbolt three decades earlier.
Cobb & Co’s operations across Australia were
eventually superseded by the expansion of
railway networks, the arrival of cheap, reliable
automobiles and the emergence of air mail.
In 1920, the Charleville coachworks closed
and by 1921, Cobb & Co in Queensland had
lost most of its mail contracts running out of
Charleville.
The company also had a vast amount of debt
due to over-expansion into industries like
wool.
Rutherford had died in 1911 the same year
the Company approved its first purchase of
motor vehicles. In New South Wales the last
coach probably ran on the Hebel-Goodooga-
Brewarrina routes in 1913 while the last
coach ran in Victoria from Casterton to Mount
Gambier in 1916.
Australia’s last horse-drawn stagecoach
service was run by Cobb & Co from Yuleba to
Surat in Queensland on 14 August 1924.
With the rapid decline in wool prices in 1929,
Cobb & Co Queensland finally went into
liquidation.
Gordon Studdert, a former employee, kept
the Cobb & Co name as his Surat store
business name until his death in 1955.
Following a legal case and settlement with
Studdert, the Cobb & Co name was acquired
by the Redmans Transport company of
Toowoomba, run by Bill Bolton MBE (1905–
1973).
Bolton also collected and preserved several
Cobb & Co. horse-drawn coaches, now in the
Toowoomba-based museum.
