TO INLAND
RAIL SENATE
INQUIRY
REPORT
The Australian Government has
welcomed the opportunity to
respond to the Senate Rural and
Regional Affairs and Transport
References Committee report into
the management of the Inland
Rail Project by the Australian Rail
Track Corporation (ARTC) and the
Commonwealth Government.
The Government’s response supports 15 of
the 26 recommendations contained within
the Committee’s report and has reinforced
a commitment that ARTC engage with
communities and stakeholders, as Inland Rail
is further designed and delivered.
Inland Rail is a multi-billion-dollar investment
that is stimulating growth, supporting jobs
and providing opportunities for businesses of
all sizes to build capability.
The Government, through its $110 billion
investment in transport infrastructure, is
taking action to build the rail infrastructure
needed to help address Australia’s growing
freight task. The delivery of Inland Rail is
enhancing connections across the national
freight and rail networks, creating more than
21,500 jobs at the peak of construction and
boosting Australia’s Gross Domestic Product
by $18 billion over the next 50 years.

DOZENS INFECTED IN AGED CARE OUTBREAK

A Lockyer Valley aged care facility
has closed its doors to the public
after becoming ground zero for a
COVID-19 outbreak.
Tabeel Aged Care in Laidley first closed
its doors on Monday, December 27, after
a resident who’d been in hospital since
Christmas returned a positive COVID-19 test.
Contact tracing is still underway, and the
source of the resident’s infection has yet to
be revealed.
Though there was initial hope that this was
an isolated case, the numbers of infected staff
and residents grew over several days and
rounds of testing.
As of January 4, the facility reported has 27
positive COVID-19 cases in their staff, and
18 from residents, with two of the infected
residents recovering in hospital.
Fortunately, with all staff being doublevaccinated,
and Tabeel residents also having
very high rates of vaccination, very few of the
infected are experiencing severe symptoms.
To help contain the spread of the virus within
the facility, all staff are wearing full face
shields and N-95 masks, and are working in
the same areas during each shift, to further
limit the potential of exposure.
Tabeel have also been taking measures to
provide activities and assistance for residents,
who have had to remain confined to their
rooms during the outbreak.
Staff have expressed their thanks to local
businesses for their contributions to the Tabeel
community during this difficult time, with the
local newsagency donating magazines, and
the local op shop contributing games, books,
puzzles and magazines, all to help keep the
residents entertained and engaged while
they’re in isolation.
Though they’re confined to their rooms,
residents have reportedly still found ways to
interact, playing hallway Bingo and magnetic
darts games, and taking part in in-room singalongs.
Daily contact is also being made with the
families or nominated contacts of the
residents who have returned positive results.
Representatives from the Department
of Health and the West Moreton Public
Health Unit have maintained a presence
at the facility since the outbreak was first
discovered, attending daily meeting and
providing essential supplies.
Though family and friends of the residents
will be unable to visit the facility in-person,
arrangements can still be made to speak with
loved ones by phone.

Users of local lakes and dams have
been advised to be careful of dangers
hidden below the surface, in the wake
of rain and flooding in recent months.
According to the latest data from Seqwater, rain
in November and December has raised the levels
of some lakes by more than 30%, concealing tree
stumps, rocks, and other debris that was previously
visible to the naked eye.
Seqwater Chief Operations Officer Stuart Cassie
has warned waterway users to be mindful of these
hazards, as well as unknown debris that may have
been introduced to waterways by floodwater.
“Striking these submerged hazards can be costly
and dangerous for boaters. Vessels may become
impaled, capsized, stranded or possibly sink. If
you’re unsure, slow down,” he said.
“Some lakes like Lake Dyer in the Lockyer Valley, water.

have been re-opened to recreation after being
closed for several years due to low lake levels, so
we’re reminding visitors to use extra caution when
at these sites as lake conditions may have changed
since their last time on the water.”
He stressed that these dangers can also pose a risk
to swimmers.
“Swimmers should stick to our designated
swimming areas at our lakes and be aware of
submerged obstacles or uneven ground underfoot
while enjoying a dip,” he said.
“And never dive into water where you can’t see the
bottom. Lakes and dams can appear safe above
water but can be deceptively dangerous so it’s
important all visitors play it safe, are aware of the
rules, and are mindful of others.”
As summer enters full swing and waterway usage is
set to increase, Seqwater will be working with the
Queensland Police Service, Queensland Boating
and Fisheries, and Maritime Safety Queensland to
enforce safe and responsible behaviour on and off

that a journey of a thousand
miles begins with a single
step, and the same is true of
the 14,080-kilometre virtual
run around Australia recently
completed by Laidley local
Christine Peach.
She first began her Run Down Under
journey on January 1, 2016, and on the
morning of December 18, 2021, she
crossed the finish line at the Laidley Rec
grounds with friends and family at her side.
Christine’s colossal accomplishment came
to fruition through near-daily dedication.
“Rain, hail, shine, I’m out there. Very rarely
do I have a rest day, I’m just out there
clicking over the K’s,” she said.
“Ticking off the towns as you go through,
each big town you get a little memento, so
I’ve got I think six stubby coolers from my
trip around Australia, and now I’ve got the
bling.”
Christine frequently competes in
marathons and other events, where she
runs under the name Blingchaser, because
“if there’s no bling, I don’t run.”
Her medal for completing the Run Down
Under will join dozens of others in her
collection at home.
The distance run during these events, and
her regular morning and afternoon runs
around Laidley, have all contributed to her
completion of the virtual around-Australia
run.
Christine said she originally took up running
for weight loss, and after meeting her
weight goal, she then chose the challenge
of Run Down Under as a motivator to keep
running.
“The journey’s been fun, full of plenty of
shoes, sweat, tears, good times, bad times.
There’s always challenges, but I always say
make your goal bigger than your excuses,
and get out there and get it done.”
Numerous friends and family members
came out to the park on Saturday morning
to run, walk, or ride the final few kilometres
with Christine, or cheer on from the finish
line, as well as write messages of support…
and enjoy a share of the cake afterwards.
Despite her love for medals, Christine said
her participation in marathons and other
running events isn’t about winning or
breaking personal bests.
“I’m pretty much a motivational runner. I’m
not worried about the time, I enjoy picking
up the broken runners, getting them home,
and celebrating with them. They call me
the marathon cougar, because it doesn’t
matter where I am, I’m pulling someone in
to get across the line with me,” she said.”
“That’s why I do it. It’s that love for running
and the running community, and what
that’s done for me.”
She hoped her story will inspire others to
rise up and challenge themselves.
“I’m always looking for anyone who wants
to give a go, wants to have a run. Join me,
I’m happy to give some pointers,” she said.
“I’m a mum of three, grandmother of one,
so age is no limit.”

Clothing, the Atlas running crew, Run Down
Under, the Weight Watchers community,
and her friends, husband, and family for
their ongoing support.
“Thank you to all of my supporters. It’s
those waves, those beeps on the road, the
‘oh, that crazy lady’s running again’, you
guys have had my back.”
Though many people would
understandably want to take a break
after reaching such a massive milestone,
Christine is rolling right into her next run,
signing up for the virtual run around New
Zealand next.
At her current pace, Christine could very
well accomplish this new goal in just a few
years.
Run Down Under owner and founder Travis
Ireland said Christine’s time of 2177 days
was well above average, with less than 300
people having completed the course to
date.
“The average person on my app takes
around 13 years to do it, based on the
maths and the yearly stats, that’s the
estimate,” he said.
He spoke of the decision behind starting
the event.
“It started in 2014, as a hobby, with just an
Excel spreadsheet and an idea. There was
no website, there was no structure behind
it,” he said.
“It was for myself, I need a long-term goal.
I personally went through some stuff that
I needed to fix in my life, so I did it for
me, and I put it out there to see if anyone
wanted to join me.”
He encouraged other people to challenge
themselves and get involved.
“We’re basically for everyone, you don’t
have to be elite,” he said.
“The only rule we have is that it’s not a
step-counting app. You have to go out with
the mentality of going for a run, or a walk;
it’s structured exercise.”

The Federal Liberal and
Nationals Government
is investing in a stronger
community, with $9,300
for the Gatton Campdraft
Association under round six
of the Stronger Communities
Programme (SCP).
Federal Member for Wright, Scott
Buchholz joined State Member for
Lockyer, Jim McDonald, Mick and Pauline
Brennan of the Gatton Campdraft
Association to make the announcement.
Mr Buchholz said the SCP was about
ensuring local community groups were
supported in the great work they do, to
make the region a better place to live.
“Here in the Lockyer Valley, we’re so lucky
to have so many good people in the
community, so many local groups doing
great things to make the Lockyer more
liveable, to bring people together and
that all helps the region.
“This funding will go towards building
the livestock pen and I am sure will be
critically important to future Campdraft

I know how much the Campdraft people
appreciate this grant from our Federal
Member Scott Buchholz,” Mr McDonald
said.
Mick Brennan said the Association was
very thankful for the funding and they
wanted the facility to be spot on.
“We want to pass this on to future
generations and it will be spot on.
“We are building a great facility here and
every little bit counts,” Mr Brennan said.

The newly-formed Valley Rugby
Club has its sights set on success in
the coming Rugby Union season,
with plans to enter a team into
the 2022 Down’s Teenage Rugby
Union Competition.
At present, the club is only preparing a team
for the Under 15’s boys competition, due
to insufficient interest in other age groups,
though the club are hoping to expand their
roster to other age groups for the 2023

Anyone aged 13 to 15 who might be
interested in joining up is encouraged to

acknowledged that the timing of the work
The latest data from the
Queensland Police Service shows
a slight reduction in overall crime
in the Lockyer Valley over the
course of 2021, though offences
still numbered in the thousands.
The data, made available through the QPS
online crime map, shows that 2796 offences
were recorded from January 2021, down from
more than 2900 in 2020.
March, November, and July were the worst
months for crime, with 283, 277, and 262
incidents reported, respectively.
Although July was one of the worst months,
there was a sharp drop in crime in August, with
only 184 incidents reported, which is likely
due to COVID-19 lockdowns that occurred
during that month.
The data also indicates that Fridays were the
days with the most crime committed, and
that the time period between 2pm and 10pm
was the most common window for criminal
activities.
Of the offences recorded in the Lockyer
Valley, drug-related offences were the most
abundant (788 incidents), followed by theft
(499 incidents), and traffic offences (338
incidents).
The least common crimes for the year were
unlawful use of a motor vehicle (64 incidents),
weapons act offences (62 incidents), and fraud
(56 incidents),
SKATEPARK UPGRADES UNDERWAY
– during the summer school holidays,
when many would normally be using the
skatepark – is unfortunate, but funding
constraints, contractor availability, and
other circumstances mean this was the only
time the work could be carried out without
jeopardising the project.
The LVRC expressed their confidence that
the long-term benefits of the project will
outweigh the short-term inconvenience.
The skatepark will be closed to the public
while the works are underway, with temporary
fencing now in place.

HORSE
HEY! WANNA KNOW MORE ABOUT HAY?
There are so many different types of hay and
it can get confusing when you start to try
figuring out which hay to use and why. Or
which hay to avoid and why. Here is my hay
by hay take on… hay:
to feed just before you ride or work horses to
fill their stomach up and protect it from ulcers
too. Plus it is rich in essential amino acids so
it will help support the guts needs for the
amino acids it needs to stay healthy!
cereal hay it will feed the bad bacteria in the
hindgut and may cause some discomfort
from excess gas production.
LUCERNE HAY
PROS
Horses love lucerne so you rarely ever get
‘meals sent back to the kitchen’. Lucerne
is also super nutritious; it contains lots of
minerals (especially calcium), is rich in fibre
and high in quality protein.
Lucerne hay is LOW in starch and water
soluble carbohydrates (collectively known
as the non-structural carbohydrates or NSC).
Which means lucerne hay is SAFE for laminitic
horses and ponies.
It is also high in calories, which makes it the
perfect hay for horses needing to gain weight
and build muscle.
I love lucerne as part of almost every horse’s
diet. It adds great nutrition and it brings the
aspect of variety in the form of a legume
forage to the diet.
CONS
It is a high calorie hay so for horses who are
overweight it can be an issue. You need to
feed it in very restricted amounts as it is easy
to make horses too fat on too much lucerne.
Lucerne’s high protein levels mean you can
feed too much protein if you feed too much
lucerne. For most horses this isn’t an issue. But
for horses in stables it means their boxes will
be wet and smelly (as they need to drink a lot
and urinate more to rid the excess nitrogen
from the protein out of their body). This
excessive urination can also lead electrolyte
depletion and in extreme cases, tying up in
working horses. It is important to remember
though that it is not the lucerne causing this
as such. It is the excess protein. So if you feed
appropriate amounts of lucerne, you won’t
see these issues.
Its high calcium characteristic also needs to
be managed carefully, especially for growing
horses. Diets that contain only lucerne
for youngsters will often have a calcium:
phosphorus ratio that is too high, which can
then cause phosphorus deficiency and may
affect correct bone development.
Lucerne for gut health: A big thumbs up!
Studies show lucerne helps gastric ulcers
heal. It is a natural buffer so it is a great forage
CEREAL HAY (OATEN, WHEATEN,
BARLEY)
PROS
When made-well, horses usually love cereal
hay. Being ‘grasses’, cereal hay is lower in
protein so it can be used as the base forage
in a horse’s diet without providing too much
protein.
Cereal hay contains lots of great fibre.
Depending on its stage of harvest and its
starch and water-soluble carbohydrate
content, cereal hay may be anything from a
high calorie to a very low-calorie hay… if you
have the luxury of choice and are using cereal
hay, you can select which is best for your
horses.
CONS
Cereals are temperate grasses. So they has
the ability to store LARGE amounts of starch
and water soluble carbohydrates (WSC),
including fructans. I have seen oat forage
with 30% plus starch+ WSC (collectively
called non-structural carbohydrate, or NSC);
which means cereal hay must be avoided for
any horses that need a low NSC diet.
Cereal hays with a high fructan content can
also cause a shift in hindgut bacteria toward
the ‘bad’ bacteria. Fructan is one of their
favourite meals. When horses are on a high
fructan cereal hay, you might see some of the
behavioural changes and some loss of fibre
fermentation (with possible issues holding
weight) that we see in horses on ‘uncooked
grain’ diets. Plus fermentation in the hindgut
of a high fructan cereal hay can cause
excessive gassiness and mild colic.
Not all cereal hay is high in fructan, but my
advice would be if you are going to buy cereal
hay in large amounts, get it tested before you
purchase it.
Cereal Hay for Gut Health: It is a bit of a lucky
dip. If you manage to get a low fructan cereal
hay then it is great for gut health. It provides
lots of fibre to keep the good bacteria in the
hindgut healthy and it is a hay that requires a
lot of chewing so it’s great to stimulate saliva
production.
On the downside, if you do get a high fructan
RHODES GRASS HAY
PROS
This is one of my favourite hays, for many
reasons… Rhodes grass is a subtropical grass
which means it can’t store large amounts of
starch or water soluble carbohydrates (WSC).
Rhodes grass will usually have a starch +
WSC content (known together as the nonstructural
carbohydrates, or NSC) of less than
12%, making it consistently safe to feed to
horses that need a low NSC diet. Including
laminitic horses and ponies.
Rhodes grass hay is usually a moderate
protein, moderate calorie hay (depending on
its stage of growth when it was harvested)
so it lends itself well to being the base hay in
almost any horse’s diet.
Horses don’t love Rhodes grass hay, so they
will often take their time in eating it. If you
have easy keepers on restricted hay diets, this
is a good thing. It extends the amount of time
they are chewing and salivating which should
then reduce the risk of stomach ulcers.
CONS
For horses that are a bit fussy, Rhodes grass
hay may be somewhat of a frustration. Other
than that, there are really no downsides to
this hay. It can make a valuable addition to
any balanced diet.
Rhodes Grass Hay for Gut Health: Rhodes
Grass Hay comes in with flying colours on
the gut health front. Lots of fibre to provide
food for our favourite friendly bacteria. Plus
it is consistently low in starch and fructans so
it won’t support the bad bacteria in any way.
TROPICAL GRASS HAY (INCL.
HUMIDICOLA, PANGOLA, JARRA,
PANIC GRASSES)
Grass species commonly found in Northern
Australia.
PROS
Tropical grasses tend not to accumulate
large amounts of NSC (especially fructans)
compared with temperate grasses, generally
making them safer for laminitis-prone horse.
Tropical grass hay is usually a low protein,
moderate calorie hay (depending on its stage
of growth when it was harvested) but it lends

itself well to being the base hay in almost
any horse’s diet – especially in hot humid
environments where the amount of protein
in diets is best kept not in excess.
CONS
These grasses contain a moderate amount
of oxalate and have been observed to cause
suspected ‘bighead’. When feeding them,
careful supplementation with calcium is
required.
Tropical Grass Hay for Gut Health: No
negatives. Good levels of fibre to keep the
hindgut healthy and generally lower in
fructans so it won’t upset the healthy balance
of microbes.
NATIVE GRASS HAY
True native grass hays are very rare – mostly
found in Northern Australia. Some native
grass species that can be found as hay
can be Creeping Bluegrass, Red Grass and
Queensland Bluegrass.
More often than not, hay is labelled ‘Native’
when it is from unimproved pastures and
many of the grasses these contain are likely
to be low fertility introduced grasses such
as; Southern Australia & New Zealand -
sweet vernal, fog grass, brown-top, bromes
or prairie grass or Northern Australia – digit
grasses and panic grasses.
PROS
A true native grass hay is likely to be low
in NSC, a great source of fibre plus lower in
protein and calories than introduced grass
species.
CONS
Hard to source. Some fussier horses may find
native grass hays less palatable.
Native Grass Hay for Gut Health: No negatives.
Good levels of fibre to keep the hindgut
healthy and generally lower in fructans so it
won’t upset the healthy balance of microbes.
