CW + 1956 Collab Edition

LETTER FROM
THE EDITORS
This collaboration between Nineteen
Fifty-Six Magazine and The Crimson
White is significant for many reasons.
It allows us to pool our resources
together to tell nuanced, deep and
needed stories about diversity and
equity on campus. It enables us to
shine a spotlight on issues that are
often swept under the rug. It gives us
the chance to celebrate the students
who have been doing the work this
whole time. And, in many ways, it’s a
step toward bridging the gap within
our own newsrooms. The Crimson
White is the oldest publication at
the University of Alabama. Whereas,
Nineteen Fifty-Six is the newest
publication at the University. In its 126
years on campus, The CW has had only
two Black editors, and its coverage
has long ignored or misrepresented
students of color. This edition is one
step toward correcting the record.
The merging of these two publications
in this special edition signifies the
progress that the University has
made. While more work must be done,
efforts made by UA student leaders
have proven to be impactful over
the years. We believe actions directly
undertaken by students, without
influence from UA faculty and staff,
are the things that leave a lasting
impression on the University. For
this reason, we’re pleased to present
the Nineteen Fifty-Six and Crimson
White collaboration. Beautiful things
happen when we come together,
and we are certain that this special
edition will educate and inspire a
diverse audience.
