Vol. 12 Issue 4
Principal’s Message
Congratulations are definitely in order. We are having a very exciting first semester
with so many things to celebrate. Brentwood High students have participated and
excelled in Academics, Athletics, and the Arts.
Brentwood High School had 27 students honored as National Merit Semi-‐Finalists or
Commended Students in the National Merit Scholarship Program. The 16,000 semi-‐
finalists (top 1%) and 34,000 commended students (top 5%) were selected from the
more than 1.5 million entrants in the National Merit Program. Students entered the
competition by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship
Qualifying Test. Our Semi-‐Finalists are Natalie Bennett, Elizabeth Cowan, Jonathan
Crites, Jonathan Dencker, Luke Donahue, Si-‐Qi Fan, Irtiqa Fazili, Ford Galin, Katharine
Kincaid, Caitlin Pinkard, Alexis Spahn, John Stoffer, and Taylor Streaty. Our
Commended Students are John Anderson, Brandon Green, Cameron Green, Kirsten
Lane, Aaron Lopacinski, David Meehan, Andrew Mullenger, Lucy Qu, Matthew
Richardson, Jessa Ross, Chase Skoda, Arthur Vidineyev, Rachel Wilburn, and Kamran
Zahid.
We are having tremendous success on the athletic fields this fall. Our Volleyball team
won the Region Championship and is competing for the TSSAA AAA State
Championship. Our girls’ soccer team won the District Championship, is hosting the
Region Final and is playing for a berth in the State Tournament. Our boys and girls
Cross Country teams won the District Meet, will be competing at the Region Meets
and then the State Championships. The Boys’ team is looking to defend last year’s
AAA State Cross Country Championship. Our cheerleading squad won the Blackman
Cheerleading competition and will be competing in the State Finals in December. Our
football team won the District Championship and will begin the state play-‐offs on
November 2.
Brentwood High Art students are having their artwork displayed all over Middle
Tennessee. Autumn Chang and Zoe Schlacter were winners for the upcoming Young
Tennessee Artists exhibition, which will be on view at the Frist Center from
November 2 through April 21. This bi-‐annual will showcase a selection of the finest
artworks created in AP and IB Studio Art programs across Tennessee. Zoe Schlacter,
Paige Hood, Ronna Saeedpour, and Lisa Qu had artwork selected for the Middle
Tennessee Regional Art Competition. Their pieces were chosen from among all
public, private, and home school art students in Middle Tennessee. These works will
be on display at the Renaissance Center in Dickson, TN from November 16 through
January 11.
We are blessed to have so many talented students at Brentwood High School. Please
join in me congratulating all of our students that participated in our many fall
activities.
I would also like to thank all of you who donated so generously to the PTO
fundraising campaign. If you have not donated already, please consider doing
so. Please remember that the PTO supports all of our students and all of our
programs. Currently, our fundraising efforts have not met our budget and
without additional donations, we will be forced to cut some of the funds that
were promised to programs throughout the school.
Freshman Parents,
It is hard to believe that we are more than halfway
through the first semester of high school. We hope
everyone is having a great year. Lots of exciting things
have already happened and there is still plenty more to
come. You will want to mark January 19 on your
calendar as that is the date for the Freshman Formal.
This event will be held in the BHS cafeteria and your
participation will be greatly needed. We will have an
informative meeting in the near future so look for an
email giving you a specific date soon.
We also wanted to remind you of the $15 POGS donation
if you haven’t already sent it in. As of now we have only
collected from 153 of our 415 families. This money is
used to provide a teacher luncheon each year and goes
toward gifts for our students when they are seniors so
we hope you will help by contributing. You can send in
payment to the office in an envelope marked POGS Class
of 2016 and the staff will make sure it gets to us.
Thank you for your support!
PTO News
Hello out there Doin’ Bruins. The Bruin nation has been doing it
all fall. From our 7-‐1 football team, to girl’s volleyball, to both
cross country teams winning regional titles and on their way to
State, soccer on the winning track, a great fall. Our Choir put on
an amazing performance in a well-‐put together venue
considering the bare bones of the Campbell Center they had to
work with. The band has entertained us with a dazzling new
show.
Our students have their first quarter under their belts, and a lot
of sports and clubs for the winter are just getting ready to jump-‐
start. Amidst all this activity and the hustle of our schedules, it’s
easy to let things slip through the cracks. For those of you who
have already made your payments to the 2013 fundraising
effort, I want to personally say “thank you for your civic
spirit”. It’s easy to think that someone else will do the job, or
that your $75 won’t make that much of a difference. That
couldn’t get any further than the truth. If everyone gave just $75
per student, the PTO we would have over $120,000 to put
toward all the needs this school has. Real needs that are not
covered by the county budget, and need to be taken care of for
your school to operate in even a minimally successful
manner. Did you know that PTO funding pays for all of our
athletic fields to be mowed? That’s right, it is not in the school
budget to mow our grass. And yes, the band and athletic booster
clubs work very hard to raise funds for our children’s activities,
but they receive almost $15,000 each toward their budgets each
year from the PTO. The Student Enrichment Committee receives
the same. Without our funding, grants to such SEC programs as
Forensics, Model UN, Teacher Grants, and more would not be
possible.
These programs are before we even get to the $55,000 we are
attempting to raise to equip our classrooms with the bare
necessities in technology to keep your student competitive with
all the other young men and women competing for college
acceptance. To date, we have raised only $35,000, which is not
even enough to pay our base program needs. We all know times
are tight. There are many families who have paid in more than
the bare minimum to help get us there. Please make your
contribution today for the academic excellence your child needs
right now. Be proud to be the Doin’ Bruin Nation.
Regards,
WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!
UPCOMING: Please look for information regarding the upcoming
Williamson County Commissioner meeting on November 13. The
county commissioners rejected the school board's request for
money to improve the BHS / BMS campuses by:
-‐improving the traffic flow
-‐installing a sprinkler system/and improved HVAC in the old
building at BMS (there currently is NO SPRINKLER SYSTEM IN THE
OLD BUILDING).
-‐removing asbestos from BMS
-‐build a performing arts center on each campus.
These improvements would not result in a tax increase and can
be financed in cash. Dr. Looney has requested parental support
at the next County Commissioner meeting to help persuade the
commissioners of the needs of our campuses.
The BHS and BMS PTO's hope to mobilize the elementary feeder
schools in order to have a large representation at the meeting.
Please consider attending the County Commissioner meeting on
November 13.
Student Enrichment Committee
SEC MEETING NEWS
The first SEC committee chair meeting was held in October. As
a subcommittee of the PTO, we continue to restructure in
order to best meet our purpose, that of student enrichment. In
addition to working with POGS and the Counseling Center, we
will be supporting Parents of Stars. Together, we hope to meet
the academic, social/emotional and college preparation needs
of our BHS family. In addition to your POGS updates, look for a
monthly newsletter from Parents of Stars in the Bruins Doins.
This newsletter will focus on a topic of interest each month.
Both Parents of Stars and POGS plan to hold informative
meetings in the spring.
As soon as the senior portrait process is completed by
Lifetouch, the National Merit Semi Finalist portraits will be
ordered and displayed in the front office hallway.
SEC will work with POGS 2014 to in planning a college
information night.
The Counseling Center held a financial aid night for parents and
students on Oct 8, which SEC supported. As in previous years,
the criteria to qualify for the HOPE scholarship as well as the
criteria to maintain the HOPE scholarship throughout college
was explained in detail by Jason Seay. Mr. Seay also discussed
utilizing the HOPE scholarship to study abroad. He gave helpful
tips for use when filling out the FAFSA, the application for the
HOPE scholarship. Mr. Seay spoke to the importance of
standardized test scores to qualify for local, institutional and
national scholarships. He also discussed the importance of
understanding the difference between loans, grants and
scholarships.
BRENTWOOD HIGH SCHOOL 1ST QUARTER HONOR ROLL AND SHINE CARD PROGRAM:
The first 9 weeks Honor Roll is posted by grade on the following pages. The BHS Honor Roll has three levels: Honor Roll -‐ GPA 3.5 and
higher, High Honor Roll -‐ GPA 3.75 or higher and Principals Honor Roll -‐ GPA 4.0 and higher. Over 76% of BHS students earned a grade
point average to be eligible for the 1st Nine Weeks Honor Roll (Honor Roll, High Honor Roll and Principals Honor Roll). Students achieving
a 3.75 GPA and above for the first three 9 week grading periods will qualify for the Triple Honor Roll. SEC coordinates the Triple Honor Roll
Honor Roll percent’s by grade:
Seniors – 80% Juniors – 71%
Sophomores – 71% Freshman – 82%
Many more students meet the criteria for the SHINE program. The SHINE (Seeking Honor, Improvement and Notable Excellence) is a
HOW TO START THE CONVERSATION
ORDER TWO MOVIES—ONE YOU PICK THAT DEPICTS WHAT LIFE WAS LIKE WHEN YOU WERE A TEENAGER AND ONE THAT
YOUR TEENAGER FEELS ACCURATELY DEPICTS HIS EXPERIENCE. WATCH THEM TOGETHER AND TALK ABOUT THE POSITIVE
AND/OR NEGATIVE WAYS YOUNG PEOPLE ARE PORTRAYED.
PASS THE REMOTE CONTROL!
WATCH EACH OTHER’S FAVORITE TELEVISION SHOW TOGETHER AT LEAST ONCE SOMETIME DURING THE SAME WEEK. WAS
THE SHOW ANY DIFFERENT THAN YOU THOUGHT IT WOULD BE? DID YOU LIKE IT? TALK TO EACH OTHER ABOUT YOUR
IMPRESSIONS.
SAY WHAT?
DIVIDE A STACK OF BLANK INDEX CARDS BETWEEN YOU AND YOUR TEEN AND WRITE DOWN DIFFERENT SLANG TERMS
ASSOCIATED WITH ALCOHOL, ONE ON EACH CARD. YOU USE THE TERMS FROM YOUR TEENAGE YEARS AND YOUR TEEN
SHOULD USE THE ONES THAT HE OR SHE HEARS TODAY. QUIZ EACH OTHER AND SEE HOW FAMILIAR YOU ARE WITH EACH
OTHER’S SLANG TERMS, SUCH AS “BUZZ” AND “GETTING STUPID.” HAVE ANY OF THE TERMS STAYED THE SAME? IF NOT,
WHY HAVE THEY CHANGED? HAVE DRUGS (THEIR POTENCY, CONSUMPTION PATTERN, POPULARITY) CHANGED?
FILL IN THE DECADE
GET FOUR BLANK PIECES OF PAPER AND WRITE DOWN THE DECADE THAT DESCRIBES YOUR TEENAGE YEARS AT THE TOP OF
TWO AND DO THE SAME FOR YOUR TEENAGER ON THE OTHER TWO PAGES. EACH OF YOU SHOULD TAKE A SET OF THE
PAPERS AND WRITE DOWN WHAT YOU KNOW ABOUT THE DECADE AND THE YOUTH CULTURE OF THAT TIME. AFTER YOU
BOTH FINISH, EITHER SWITCH PAPERS OR READ YOUR THOUGHTS ALOUD. DISCUSS THE SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES IN
YOUR IMPRESSIONS.
TAKE TURNS PLAYING DEEJAY THE NEXT TIME YOU AND YOUR TEENAGER GO FOR A RIDE IN THE CAR. YOU CHOOSE THE
Tuesday, November 13 from 9:30-11:00 am at Pediatric Therapies
1880 General George Patton Drive, Suite 202
Cool Springs Area in Franklin
This month we will have a guest speaker during the first half of the meeting and then will have time for parents to share and discuss
issues. Roxanne Kennerly and Karen Pilkerton will be discussing the Parent/Child Stress Intervention Project, a research project of the
Vanderbilt Kennedy Center that is examining the effectiveness of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction for parents and children with
developmental disabilities, serious chronic health issues or mental health concerns. Research has shown that parents of children with
disabilities typically report higher levels of stress than parents of typically developing children, and Dr. Elisabeth Dykens is looking at
mindfulness as a way to help parents and children reduce their stress.
Roxanne Kennerly is the research coordinator for the Parent/Child Stress Intervention Project, and she teaches Mindfulness Based Stress
Reduction to children and adolescents. She is the parent of two teenage boys, one of whom has Down syndrome. She has been involved
with the disability community for 15 years, professionally and as a volunteer on several boards. She is currently the president of the
Down Syndrome Association of Middle Tennessee. She has been with Vanderbilt for nearly 10 years and finds one of her greatest
rewards is working with families.
Karen Pilkerton is an RN and the mother of Ali, 28 years old, who has Down syndrome. Karen, who has more than 10 years in
mindfulness training, has been teaching Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction to parents in this project for three years and has
participated in several mindfulness and stress reduction courses and retreats. She is a member of the Insight Meditation Group, a past
Board of Directors member of the Friends of the Susan Gray School for Children, and a past Board member of the Down Syndrome
Association of Middle Tennessee. Please contact Shelly Luckett with questions at shelly.wcslink@gmail.com or 794-‐8067.
It may help if you think of attendance at school similar to
work. You would never just miss work without calling in
and letting the boss know (472-‐4225 by 8:00am). You
would always submit a request prior to the time off
needed (one week in advance) and make sure you have
your work taken care of before you are absent.
I appreciate your reviewing these policies and will be
happy to answer any questions you may have.
Drum major Zachary Sexton is shown directing the band
in front of original art that was created just for the
band's show and used as a featured focal point.
The BHS Marching Band took to the road in October,
competing against more than 50 other Southern and
Midwestern bands at the Bands Of America Super Regional
Competition in St. Louis. One of the features of this year's
show is the awe-‐inspiring set of angel's wings that appear
above the backdrop on the field at the end of the show.
Drum major Michaela Box salutes the crowd to signify the
beginning of the band's 2012 marching show.
Another way the "Redemption" show illustrates the theme
of an angel losing and then re-‐gaining its wings is through
the design of the flags used by the Color Guard.

BHS CROSS COUNTRY
JESSE OWENS CLASSIC
October 6th
BHS Cross Country team traveled to Alabama for Jesse Owens Classic, one of the better invitational’s in the Southeast and
Brentwood cemented it’s growing reputation by racing with excellence in both Girls’ & Boys’ Gold Elite races. The conditions were
muddy and very slippery, but we were a match for both in both races.
The girls returned from health and despite course conditions, nine out of ten girls ran seasonal bests to finish an impressive 2 nd
overall out of 41 teams. Congrats to Emily Hughes 19 th , Hannah Caldwell 23 rd , Lacey Duvall 52 nd , Elizabeth Scott 55 th , Brianna Koshy 80 th ,
Ansley Hardin 122 nd , Emily Batiste 155 th , Evie Giaconia 176 th , Natalie Batiste 218 th , Nisha Bhuva 227 th . 297 runners finished the race.
The boys’ team goal was to win the meet
in strong fashion. They did finishing 1 st out of 44
teams with 69 points in front of second place
Trinity’s (Louisville) 122 points. Course conditions
kept the boys from running seasonal bests, but
were able to put the top 4 on the podium. Congrats
to Alec Thomas 3 rd , Aaron Thomas 4 th , Taylor
Caldwell 5 th , Coleman Churitch 12 th , Waqqas Fazili
49 th , Daniel Hamm 55 th , Ryan Lee 63 rd , Rahib Bashir
115 th , Ryan Dennison 266 th , PJ Scalisi 288 th . 399
runners finished the race.
WILLIAMSON COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
October 17th
Williamson County Championship and District meet was run at Harlansdale Farm in Franklin. The course lends itself to fairly fast
straightaway running, but it was a warm day with consistently strong wind (~15mph) during both the girls and boys races. The course
surface was thick grass, which is far slower than packed dirt or low-‐cut grass.
The girls ran their best; no one stopped fighting having an “every point counts” attitude. The net result was a 1-‐point victory
over the defending AAA State Champions, Ravenwood, in a race where if any single Bruin scorer had finished one place lower, BHS
would have lost the meet. Congrats to Hannah Caldwell 4 th , Elizabeth Scott 6 th , Emily Hughes 8 th , Hailey Hendry 14 th , Lacey Duvall 18 th ,
Brianna Koshy 21 st , Ansley Hardin 30 th , Evie Giaconia 38 th .
The boys took an unselfish, team-‐oriented approach that is central to their success by “pack-‐running” and the results confirmed
the effectiveness of such an approach. They put the first 4 runners across the line to take the District and Williamson County titles.
Congrats to Aaron Thomas 1 st , Alec Thomas 2 nd , and Taylor Caldwell 3 rd all three crossing the line together followed by Coleman Churitch
4 th , Daniel Hamm 6 th , Waqqas Fazili 10 th , Ryan Lee 17 th , and Rahib Bashir 25 th .
REGION 6 CHAMPIONSHIP
October 25th
Both boys and girls won the Region 6 Championships at the Iroquois
Steeplechase course in hot, dry, windy conditions. The girls once again out ran
Ravenwood 46 to 57 points. Varsity runners were Emily Hughes 3 rd , Hannah Caldwell
5 th , Lacey Duvall 7 th , Brianna Koshy 15 th , Elizabeth Scott 16 th , and Ansley Hardin 24 th .
The boys earned their first place once again placing the first 4 runners across the line.
Varsity runners were Alec Thomas 1 st , Coleman Churitch 2 nd , Aaron Thomas 3 rd , Taylor
Caldwell 4 th , Daniel Hamm 8 th , Waqqas Fazili 11 th , and Ryan Lee 17 th (first freshman).
Again, parents have the opportunity to purchase sports injury
and accident insurance coverage for their BHS Student. This
program is sponsored by the Bruin Athletic Club and was
developed by former Brentwood High parent. Lou’s three sons,
Josh, Russell, & Christopher attended BHS from 2004 to 2010.
Here are some of the highlights of the plan. :
1. All Brentwood High students, their parents, alumni, other
siblings, and teachers are eligible for the plan.
2. The plan is insured by Transamerica.
3. The plan is designed to cover out of pocket expenses due to
injury or accident that are not covered by your health
insurance.
4. The plan covers your student/athlete at all events whether
they are TSSAA sanctioned or not sanctioned. It evens covers
them for injuries and accidents at home and when they are
involved in other activities.
5. The plan pays cash benefits directly to you and does not
integrate or subrogate with your current health insurance.
6. The plan helps support Brentwood Football as TrueNorth pays
a marketing fee back to the Bruin Athletic Club based upon the
number of participants.
For more information on the plan or to sign up, you can go to the
