Professional step-on guide, Curt – a history buff and true foodie known for his creative 10 | Single-Day Tours Hollywood’s Pantages Theatre Chicken Pot Pie and memorable food adventures – leads the way on this deep dive into San Diego history and the local “pie” scene. After a scenic drive down the coast, we’ll enjoy an included early lunch (approximately 11:00 a.m.) with choice of entrée (chicken pot pie, vegetable pot pie or crispy chicken salad) at the legendary San Diego Chicken Pie Shop in San Diego’s North Park neighborhood. Located at the southern tip of the Point Loma Peninsula, this monument commemorates the landing of Portuguese explorer, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo at San Diego Bay in 1542. At the San Diego waterfront, we’ll stroll along the Greatest Generation Walk to admire several Navy-themed art installations. Undoubtedly, the largest and most colorful of the memorials is “Embracing Peace,” a 25-foot-tall, 6,000-pound statue that stands against the imposing backdrop of the USS Midway aircraft carrier. It features a Navy sailor kissing a nurse – designed after the famous photo taken in Times Square on V-J Day. We’ll also see the National Salute to Bob Hope and the Military, 16 larger-than-life bronze figures that represent a typical road show with Bob entertaining troops near the front. In the Gaslamp Quarter, we’ll encounter Victorian-era architecture blended seamlessly with modern-day allure, labyrinthine streets, hidden gems and perhaps even a ghost story or two. Enjoy an included boxed lunch, as well as an opportunity to pick your own blueberries (for an additional fee on-site) at a 16-acre u-pick berry farm nestled in-between rolling hills of majestic oak trees. Recognized as one of the best u-pick farms in the country by USA Today, the farm features a farm store where you can purchase freshly picked berries, stone fruit and jams. This afternoon we’ll continue to a working lavender farm and learn how the lavender is grown, harvested and distilled into an oil known for its culinary and healing qualities, with an opportunity to pick your own bundle of lavender (for an additional fee on-site). The lavender shop here sells a variety of lavender products including essential oils, lotions, soaps, sachets, and more. Later, we’ll arrive in Los Olivos, the charming and historic town tucked into the picturesque Santa Ynez Valley. Learn about the history, cultural significance and artistic processes involved in their creation as a knowledgeable docent shares little-known facts about this group of 17 sculptural towers and mosaics built over a 33- year period by Simon Rodia, an Italian immigrant and tile-setter. Built with his own two hands, the Watts Towers are the result of Rodia’s artistic fantasy – fanciful spires pieced together from steel-reinforcing rods and wire mesh, colorfully decorated with seashells and fragments of broken dishes and bottles. Enjoy time at leisure to explore the Watts Towers Arts Center, featuring rotating exhibitions of contemporary art.
