The Word on the Street

haddonfield.today | 3

Some mothers keep many

of their children’s toys.

Others disappear them in

the dead of night.

What’s a favorite toy

from your childhood that

you wish you still had?

JULIE

BEDDINGFIELD

of Inkwood Books

didn’t hesitate:

“Lincoln Logs!”

Julie spent endless

hours building an

approximation of

the cabin in ‘Little

House on the Prairie.’

“At that time, I think

I wanted to be an

architect,” she says.

Haddonfield’s

ROBERT BYRD

wishes his mother

– “a compulsive

thrower-outer”

– had overlooked

his stuffed panda.

“I don’t know why,

specifically, but I just

loved that thing.”

BILL DILLON of

Haddonfield got

wistful remembering

his teddy bear. “He

was my best friend.”

Bill’s family moved

when he was five.

“I suspect the bear

moved too, at that

time. Elsewhere.”

CAROLYN

NICOLAY of

Haddonfield loved

“the big illustrations

and rhyming words

in Robert Louis

Stevenson’s ‘A Child’s

Garden of Verses,’”

and wishes she still

had that book.

RAVON

CUMMINGS of

Philadelphia has

fond memories of

playing with ‘The Six

Million Dollar Man.”

Why would Ravon

like to still have that

toy? “I took really

good care of my

toys. Today it would

probably be worth

six million dollars!”

Mild-mannered

WAYNE ZSCHECH

– the pastor at the

Lutheran Church

of Our Savior in

Haddonfield –

would give almost

anything to still

have: “#3. ‘Rock‘Em

Sock‘Em Robots.’ #2.

‘Crossfire.’ #1. ‘Hot

Wheels.’”

A stroll down a lane of lights

Residents of Evergreen Lane have banded together to share their celebration

of the season with the entire community. They’ve created a Holiday Light Stroll

along their street, from Kings Highway to the area of Tatem School.

The aim is two-fold: To bring holiday cheer to friends and neighbors, and to

collect socks for those in need. Donations of new socks will be accepted in a

bin on the porch of 2 Evergreen Lane to benefit Knock Knock Give a Sock. If you

wish to donate dollars online, go here: bit.ly/3m72drp or scan the QR code n.

Evergreen Lane is a compact street of about 50 homes, tucked away between

Kings Highway and Grove Street. The Lane of Lights will kick off at dusk on

Fri Dec 11. A good place to start your stroll is the Children’s Sculpture Zoo at

Tatem Memorial Garden (corner of Evergreen and Kings Highway – between the

Haddon Fortnightly and the High School).

The lights will remain on nightly through New Year 2021.

Seasonal choral concert

ChildrenSong of New Jersey will present a virtual concert titled ‘Season of

Light’ on Sun Dec 20 at 3pm. The choir’s music will celebrate the significance

of light during the winter holiday season. Light can represent both religious

and non-spiritual winter events such as Christmas, Hanukkah, Santa Lucia,

Kwanzaa, and the winter solstice. During winter festivities, people sing, dance,

decorate, and incorporate some sort of light into their celebrations, be it the

moon, fires, candles, or electric lights.

This concert will feature ChildrenSong singers age 8 to 18 who participate

virtually in weekly rehearsals with professional musicians Polly Murray, Esther

Chen, and Nick Watts.

The suggested donation is $10 per adult, payable by venmo @childrensong

or by check to ChildrenSong of NJ, PO Box 134, Haddonfield, NJ 08033. A Zoom

link will be emailed on receipt of payment. Questions? info@childrensong.org.

Workshops on anxiety in children

The Haddonfield Education Association is preparing to sponsor two

workshops designed to help parents identify signs of anxiety in their children

and to support their children’s mental health during the pandemic.

The first presentation, scheduled for Wed Jan 20 at 7pm and titled Anxiety

in Children, is for parents of children in preschool through grade 8.

The second presentation, titled Anxiety in Adolescents and set for Wed Feb 3

at 7pm. is for parents of children in grades 9 thru 12.

Both presentations will be conducted via Zoom by Dr. Phillip C. Kendall,

Distinguished University Professor, Child and Adolescent Anxiety Disorders

Clinic at Temple University.

Although each workshop is self-contained, interested parents are welcome to

register for both presentations, if they wish. Go here: bit.ly/3mbmooa. Scan n.

The Zoom link will be sent to registrants about 24 hours prior to each

presentation date.

The first 20 people to register for (and attend) either session will receive one

of the following books, courtesy the Haddonfield Education Association and

Inkwood Books:

• For parents of preschool to grade 8 students: Me and My Feelings: A Kid’s

Guide to Understanding and Expressing Themselves.

• For parents of grades 9 to 12 students: Permission to Feel: Unlocking the

Power of Emotion to Help our Kids, Ourselves, and Our Society Thrive by Marc

Brackett, PhD.

Questions may be submitted up to seven days prior to the presentation

– here: bit.ly/3mbmooa. n – and also may be asked during Q&A time on Zoom.

These presentations reflect the School District’s commitment to socialemotional

learning and the social-emotional health of students and staff.

Light up with luminarias

Interfaith Caregivers’ annual Holiday House Tour

was paused this year, for safety reasons.

In place of this major fund-raiser, the organization

is offering two new ways to support its mission and

add some joy during the holiday season.

• A “glass” holiday ornament engraved with a

pearl of wisdom: “Do Small Things with Great Love.”

Each ornament comes in a presentation box and,

the sponsors say, “will make a fine addition to your

tree trimming and a wonderful gift for family and

friends.” The cost is $20.

• Custom luminarias with candles, to

symbolically light the way for a better 2021.

Interfaith Caregivers hopes its supporters and

residents will display the luminarias outside their

homes on New Year’s Eve. The bags, which carry a

snowflake design, are $20 for a pack of ten. “Join in

the fun and light up your neighborhood.”

To order ornaments and luminarias, email

rloiseau@ifchaddons.org or call at 856-354-0298,

9am to 5pm, weekdays.

Alternatively, stop by Weichert Realtors (132

Kings Hwy E) on Sat Dec 12 or Sat Dec 19 – 11am

to 2pm – to place orders with Interfaith volunteers.

(Chat with them about the rewards of volunteering!)

Note: Ornaments are in short supply, and bags are

COViD message from the Commissioners

Following the death of a sixth Haddonfield resident from the novel

coronavirus, the Commissioners posted the message below on the Borough

website:

On the evening of December 8, 2020, the Board of Commissioners was

informed of the death of another one of our Haddonfield residents due to

COVID-19. This is the sixth soul lost to coronavirus within our Borough. The

Commissioners send their deepest condolences to the family & friends of all

those we’ve lost.

We had a total of 228 reported cases of COVID-19 as of November 30th. An

additional 22 cases were reported between Dec. 1st and Dec. 8th, bringing us to

250 cases. These 22 cases included: [A list followed, now out-of-date.*]

The Commissioners recognize that many people are in need of spiritual &

psychological support at this time, while others are looking for opportunities

to give back through community service projects. During the COVID-19

pandemic, the safest means to do these things is by phone, video, or through

social media platforms. Where in-person participation or support is necessary,

the CDC has issued the following guidance to help keep you safe:

• Maintain at least a distance of 2 arm lengths from others, including when

distributing food or praying.

• Wear a mask to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

• Meet outside, where it is easier to keep people apart and where there is more

ventilation.

Dance! (No one’s watching.)

The Markeim Arts Center is sponsoring a fourweek

virtual creative movement class for 3-to-6-

year-olds.

Titled “Dance as if No One is Watching!” and led

by Amanda Keller Fruchter, the class will encourage

kids and their caregivers to move and groove from

the comfort of their homes.

Kids will have the opportunity to let loose and

express themselves freely through dance, and

will be hopping, skipping, jumping, and sashaying

throughout the house.

Each class will consist of a warm-up followed by

a new step, each one part of the ballet or modern

dance repertoire. The class will draw from multiple

mediums in addition to dance (such as storytelling,

fine art, and music), and will integrate the use of

household items.

Note that the class can be modified to

accommodate physical differences.

Note also that caretaker participation is highly

encouraged.

The cost for Markeim members is $75 for the set

of four weekly classes. For non-members, $85.

The classes will be presented on Tue Dec 15, Dec

22, Dec 29, and Jan 5 from 2 to 2:40pm.

Learn to be a photo pro

Taking your photos to the next level is easier than you may think. The

Markeim Arts Center is sponsoring a program to help you learn how.

Titled “Haddonfield Photo Walk: The Art of Composition” and led by Debbie

Troy, the workshop will show you how to make your images more compelling

by applying some simple composition techniques. Participants will learn how

to think like a pro while capturing the beauty of downtown Haddonfield. (Note:

This is not a technical course about camera settings, so all levels are welcome.)

The Photo Walk, which is open to those age 15 and up, is scheduled for Sun

Dec 13 from 2:30 to 4pm (or 4:30pm, if extra time is needed). It will end with a

sweet surprise (think chocolate). Wear a mask, warm clothing, and comfortable

shoes. Space is limited and social distancing will be maintained.

The cost for Markeim members is $35. For non-members, $45.
