overall, uncertainty is recently on <strong>the</strong> rise, even though it was expected to<br />
return to ‘normal’ levels after <strong>the</strong> last major global external shock, namely <strong>the</strong><br />
financial crisis <strong>of</strong> 2007-2009.<br />
4.1.2 Trends in VUCA<br />
VUCA stands <strong>for</strong> Volatility, Uncertainty, <strong>Co</strong>mplexity and Ambiguity. This<br />
acronym was introduced by strategic analysts in <strong>the</strong> sixties and gained<br />
much <strong>of</strong> its popularity through teaching materials <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> USA army. Since 2014<br />
<strong>the</strong> acronym has worldwide seen a steady increase in search popularity on<br />
Google (see figure 1).<br />

The individual components <strong>of</strong> VUCA are explained in table 2, toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>with</strong> an<br />
assessment by Bennett and Lemoine (2014b) <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> degree to which results<br />
<strong>of</strong> one’s actions can be predicted and how much can be known about <strong>the</strong><br />
situation that is faced. The table also prescribes actions <strong>for</strong> response that <strong>the</strong><br />
authors suggests.<br />
