charge can exist as a separate entity in the synagogue<br />

framework. The fact is that it is only one part of a<br />

larger and wider picture for which the Rabbi bears<br />

the final responsibility. In my case, I know that the<br />

success of my program was due to the fullest harmony,<br />

cooperation, mutual understanding and respect that<br />

existed between me and my Rabbi. I wish that more<br />

Hazzanim, and for that matter more Rabbis, realized<br />

how much potential good is lost in the absence of these<br />

fundamental relations between the two co-ministers of<br />

their congregations.<br />

Permit me to leave this thought with you in closing<br />

: The Hazzan, by wisely exercising his fortunate<br />

privilege, can in a large measure instill within the<br />

hearts of our children such a love of their people and<br />

musical heritage, that their hearts will be singing<br />

joyously and Jewishly long after the age of youth is<br />

past, for indeed :<br />

“A people that lives, sings<br />

A people that sings, lives!”<br />
